Phillies, Marlon Byrd agree to 2-year, $16M deal

Marlon Byrd, David WrightThe Phillies have signed free-agent OF Marlon Byrd (Rosenthal) to a two-year, $16 million deal (Rubin).

5:39 pm: “We didn’t have extensive discussions with Marlon,” Mets GM Sandy Alderson said in Orlando on Tuesday. “It wasn’t a place where we were prepared to be aggressive.”

11:43 am: The Mets were valuing Byrd as a fourth outfielder, which made a return unlikely (Martino).

Nov. 11: The Mets touched base with the agent for Byrd (Carig).

Nov. 11: He is getting calls from several teams, but the Mets aren’t showing interest in re-signing him right now, sources say (Ackert).

Oct. 2: This past August, Sandy Alderson traded Byrd and John Buck to the Pirates for reliever Vic Black and minor-league 2B Dillson Herrera. In the days before he was traded, Byrd told Alderson he would be open to returning to the Mets next season (Ackert).
