Mets sign RHP reliever Buddy Carlyle

The Mets have signed Buddy Carlyle to a minor-league deal.

He does not have an invite to big league camp.

The 36-year-old righty last appeared in the majors in 2011 with the Yankees.

Last season, Carlyle pitched at Triple-A for the Toronto Blue Jays organization, going 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.196 WHIP over 56 innings.

I wonder if Sandy lays awake at night thinking-up these blockbuster signings.

I love how all of you expect the Mets to make HUGE moves. We got some players here and there, and are taking a gamble on others. Most of you hated on Marlon Byrd last year, and look how he turned out. Lets see how things pan out instead of hating on a season that hasn't even happened.

Lets be honest, it could be worse. The Phillies were thinking of changing their baselines from 90ft to 60ft to accommodate for their, according to Ruben Amaro, "seasoned players." So yea, be happy we dont have a bunch of old guys lying around, and a depleted farm system.

The Mets may not be making all the best moves, but are making smart moves with what is out there, and what they have right now. We have a farm system that other organizations would kill to have at the moment, and a good mix of rookie/veterans up and down the latter. The only thing we need now is to have it work, which I hope to see this season. I am not looking for a World Series by any means, but if I can see a competitive team this year, I will be happy. So go ahead I am sure most of you nay-sayers will rip me apart, and say I am crazy, but my opinion is as subjective as yours. The only difference is that I'm not the negative one. Have some faith, LETS GO METS!

Did anyone call Jesse Orosco, or does he skew too young?

Why are they signing a 36 year old and NOT inviting him to the big league camp? He's clearly not a prospect or part of the long-term plan.

I'm not being sarcastic or critical, I'm just wondering if there isn't some arcane rule that I'm unaware of.

Cue the sarcastic "Print the Playoff Tickets!!!" posts.

Eveland is a left-hander who has had brief bursts of success (with Oakland and Toronto), while bouncing around several MLB organizations the past 8 years. Based on prior performance, his strength would seem to lie in a more subservient role than starter, set-up man, or closer. If he hooks on this spring, he'll be in Buffalo, most likely, and they can see what he may/may not have left. (NOTE: He wasn't in organized ball last year, according to baseball-reference.com)
