Mets sign LHP reliever Dana Eveland

The Mets and veteran left-handed reliever Dana Eveland have agreed to a minor-league deal, the team announced Tuesday. He will not be in big-league spring training, but will report to minor-league camp later this spring.

Eveland, 30, pitched in Korea last year for the Hanwha Eagles. However, he has a career 5.46 ERA in 392 innings during eight big-league seasons, getting time as both a reliever and starting pitcher.

Don't know where we're going to put all these guys.  We've got way more bodies than full-season roster spots.

The responses to a minor league signing with no spring training invite really tells you all you need to know about the people left commenting on this site.

Can't hurt. Plus he is a lefty.

Why even allow a comments section for this update...only asking for trouble and negative posts.  We still have no cleanup hitter and we don't have a shortstop.  Wake me up when ownership legitimately wants to win more than 74 games and stops blaming the fans...

This is a big enough sample to see that this guy is not any good.

This is fine. You amass spare parts. No problem.

They still need at least one bat. Ike Davis has to show he can hit during ST, which might get you something as well.

Have to say, they should do well with the bullpen. Every conceivable option being signed. With young starters still stretching themselves, a veteran that could crap out at any moment, this is all smart.

Now, how about the offense...

And, meantime, our shortstop is still Ruben Tejada.

I like this. He was a good starter and could be a good spot starting and long man option if Lannan has to move into the lineup.

I like the approach though. Sign some experienced arms, hope to catch lightning in a bottle. Let the youngsters continue to develop until they're mlb ready

Not much else to comment on.  It's middle of February and not much else is happening.  While other teams are still making a splash by signing impact players, our guys are collecting rejects.  What are you expecting us to say?

I really think Sandy is doing it on spite just to rile up the fan base.  The last laugh will be on him when Citi is empty by June.

How frustrating will it be when our young pitching shines and we keep losing one run games because we can't get big hit or there's not enough protection in line up for Wright or Grandy?  But then again, many have already given up on 2014.  Let's wait for 2015 when Harvey is back.  Keep on waiting...

@PL Worthington III There is nothing wrong with this signing. A reliever can have a good season, good half season, or completely tank - any reliever. It's minor-league deal and he's in the stockpile - no problem. With these starters, a good bullpen can add wins to this team and a good bullpen needs enough guys to fall back on rotate around, work through injuries, be able to focus on the hot hand.

Have to separate that from the lack of movement by the team to acquire offense. The bullpen stockpiling is smart. The inability to to something with the offense is an unrelated problem.

I've seen Met teams function very well on good pitching and win 80+ games with passable offense. One or two good bats and this team will have passable offense. Not enough for playoff talk, but enough to be significantly better. I have no faith in Ike, none in Duda, and none in Chris Young.

@PL Worthington III  not everyone you sign is gonna be an all-star. You need depth at triple A. Sometimes i really hate other Mets fans

@Joe Paulson One bat, to say the least. I, for one, won't buy even a good ST from Ike. I'd even settle for a competent ST. It has to morph into  a scorching April. They have to light a fire under him.

@sickntired  This transaction doesn't merit a response.  It is a minor league deal and the guy is literally being sent to the minors. He's not even coming to spring training.  So I'm expecting people to have enough intelligence to understand that.  If people think this signing has something to do with not signing Drew, they just don't have a clue.

The idea that Sandy is doing it on spite is quite possibly the most absurd comment I've ever read on this blog, and that's really saying something.

Didn't read any where about  this guy throwing a brand new pitch like a knuckball.  He is still the same guy with an ERA over 5!!!!!!!

True, but for the bullpen at least, no need to give huge contracts. We've seen how this.works for many other teams

@sickntired  Well i do have hope, but that wasn't really what I was talking about in any of my comments.

sickntired

Fair enough.

Let's hope they come out of the box and prove most of us wrong and have a good season.

Let's hope that all our young arms stay healthy and pitch to their potential.

Let's hope that Sandy makes the right moves and trades quantity for quality when the right time comes.

Let's hope that all of our anxieties coming into the season end up being exagerated.

It's good to hope. Right?

If we can't hope in Spring when hope is eternal, we sure as hell can't when the team is out of it by June.

@sickntired

"the whining has nothing to do with this post".

Exactly!!!  That's my point.  This blog used to actually be a discussion forum.  Since all of the changes and since the long time users left each post just contains a couple of random comments that are just venting, and have nothing to do with anything else.  That gets exhausting to me.   I know I need to stop coming here because of what it's become, but I guess it's just habit.  It's sad, because this used to be a fun place to chat, but now it's just become a list of complaints.    I understand people are frustrated, but just reading constant complaints doesn't do it for me.

The whining has nothing to do with this post.  It has to do with the last 5 years of losing and being lied to.  Don't you see that?

You seem like a veteran of this blog and although I just started to post my comments, I have been visiting and reading this blog for many years now.

Yes, I have purposely joined these discussions to voice my anger and frustration with how the Wilpons are running the team.  And it doesn't look like I'm the only one doing it.

You may not like it but until they show the same passion and commitment to winning or they come out and start telling us why they are fielding a AAAA team even after they swore that 2014 would be different, you are gonna continue reading the same posts.

I'm not arguing with you.  I know we all want the same thing.  An enjoyable, winning franchise that we can be proud of.  I'm just not seeing it...

@sickntired  I beg to differ.  I think you are taking it way to seriously.  And I think that venting about the same thing, no matter what the topic of the post is doesn't make any sense.

And of course people would know if it wasn't posted about here.  Is this where people get all of their news?  This was on Twitter last night.  I read it and moved on.  The problem with the people left on this blog is that every thing turns into a whining indictment on the direction of the franchise.

I  absolutely agree that they should spend  more money.  But I personally don't believe that every post needs to be a venue to complain about that.  And I also believe that a lot of people left here truly think this signing is a problem.  To me that's more of a statement about how sad this blog has become than anything else.

Take it easy buddy.  You are taking this way too seriously.  You're missing the point.  People are ANGRY and need to vent.  You don't think this is where it should be happening but a lot of people disagree.  I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

As for the  "...on spite" comment, that's called sarcasm.  If the Mets had gotten this guy and Metsblog didn't bother to post it on the blog, no one would know nor care but since they reported it then the fans that are still hoping that they go out and make a few more moves are surely going to vent their frustration.

Come on now.  Work with me.  You have to admit that ownership and front office have been contradictory and inconsistant now for a few years.

@PL Worthington III @Eric Koeller  Actually, our lineup is set.  Most just do not like it:

LF) EY

2B)) Murphy

3B) Wright

RF) Granderson (maybe LF with EY in Right)

CF) C Young

1B) Davis - Satin

C) TDA

SS) Tejada

this will certainly be the lineup with some shake ups to get Lagares at bats and such, but this will be the main one you will see.

I don't understand what is so hard to understand. It's real simple. They don't have the money!

Offense costs dollars. Washed up pitchers don't. The point is if the Cardinals needed a shortstop they'd get one. They don't. The Mets need a shortstop and a first baseman and some hitters, yet they do nothing to improve.

@PL Worthington III @Eric Koeller  Sandy has underlings.  I have serious doubts that Sandy is deeply involved with minor league signings like this. Especially ones that come with no ST invite.  Settle down.

Eric Koeller

@PL Worthington III @Eric Koeller signing a player to a minor league deal is going to make the difference between getting another hitter and not getting one? really? and who are we gonna sign? Cruz? he's another Jason Bay waiting to happen
