Mets sign Daisuke Matsuzaka to minors deal

The Mets signed RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, the team announced Friday.

Matsuzaka was 3-3 with a 4.42 ERA and 1.241 WHIP with the Mets in seven starts in 2013.

He was 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA with a 0.8355 WHIP in his last four starts.

5:30 pm: Matsuzaka can earn $1.5 million if he makes the team (Sherman).

Matsuzaka showed at the end of last year he still had something to offer at the big league level. His improved tempo over his last four starts undoubtedly contributed to his success, but he also showed off very good breaking stuff as well.

Matsuzaka will join Jenrry Mejia and John Lannan in a competition for the last spot in the rotation, although I’ve heard a number of times this winter the team is hoping Mejia stays healthy and wins the job out of camp. That would turn Dice-K and Lannan as quality depth at Triple-A or possibly even the bullpen.

quite a stock pile. almost have to assume sandy has a handshake deal for a power hitter like Bautista for wheeler or something of that nature

I know that we need pitching and there are prospects coming but the Colorado Rockies have a RH pitcher in there farm that would be a super star here in NY Jonathan Gray, Classic power pitcher frame at 6’4” and 255 pounds; broad shoulders; strong lower half and core with a knowledge of how to use both; drives off the rubber; power doesn’t require maximum effort; fast and fluid arm action; explosive; can appear stiff at times; will still get underneath the ball and drag arm; has a feel for his mechanics and understands when to make adjustments.

Effortless plus-plus fastball velocity; borderline elite; registers in the 94-98 mph range deep into games; will crack triple digits early in starts; topped out at 102 mph this spring; lacks movement; doesn’t shy away from challenging hitters; plus slider sits consistently between 85-88 mph; late, wipe-out break; sharp tilt with great pace; present plus offering.

22 years old and hate to say this Roger Clemens type pitcher would be worth going after what a future with this kid in it! He would flourish here not so well up in Colorado.

The Yankees get Tanaka, We get Dice-K....lol. i think the yankees may have a billion dollar payroll next year....lol( JK..I know its not that high) I wish the Mets would spend half of what they do..We would have a great team as well. BUT SERIOUSLY.....this is why baseball needs a salary cap...a cap not a tax!!!!

I know this is kinda off topic but I really feel like we should try to make a deal involving murph and Lagares for Brett Gardner. Gardner goes into right field and c.young goes to center. We start Flores at 2nd. And it gives us a layoff hitter.

Why are people wasting time complaining about signing dice-ghey??? Seriously, whats the big deal? He's cheap and he's pitched in the majors....why worry about something not worth worrying about? In early June, when we need a guy to fill in for 3 starts due to injury, all of you guys moaning now will be happy that dice-ghey is in AAA ready to go. With the myriad of problems that our mickey-mouse organization has, its amazing that so many have a problem with dice-ghey....I seriously don't get it.

5th spot should go to poor man Pedro Martinez aka Mejia

Could there be a match with the Yankees at some point this year with Murphy?  2B is really their only clear weakness...Murphy is my favorite Met, but no way this team keeps him when he's a free agent.  I think it's pretty clear they'll go with Flores eventually...

It almost seemed that when Warthen got him to speed up his time between innings he started to get in a rhythm I had not seen since early BoSox days,. Nice safe addition with upside.

Blech!!  Hopefully Mejia wins 5th spot.

So creative, the Mets' management. Looking to better the team, the team has replaced Davis, Duda,  Tejada, Quintanilla, and Dice-K with Davis, Duda,  Tejada, Quintanilla, and Dice-K.

It would be hilarious if it weren't true.

If you want to see him as insurance in Vegas, fine. But do we really want to see him take starts away from our up-and-coming pitchers? We've seen so many reclamation projects over the years. Other than Marlon Byrd has any of them been able to make any lasting contributions to the team?

Yuck.  Glad to see our pitching analyst thinks a couple meaningless games in September mean something.  His starts:

5ip / 5 er

4.3 / 4er

3 / 6 er

5.6 / 1

7 / 1

6 / 2

7/6 / 0

Averaged 5.4 innings with an era of 4.42...so what did he exactly show?

$1.5 Mil if he's on the opening day roster? Looks like it's Mejia's spot.

great, fine with this but can we please do something about short stop.

I'm sure we will see him, but hopefully it is only when a starter gets hurt and not in April. Hopefully Mejia finally stays relatively healthy.

@yankeehaterpeople are pissed because these nickel and dime moves are the only ones this team is making of late without adding an impact player, thats why, especially when you look at our line up vs the Yankees!

Brilliant post Robert! Don't worry, 2014 will be different. Yea, right. Same crap just moved around a bit. Please. Sell the team!! Please!!!!

Bleacher report says scouts have him a speed guy with not much power, who chases pitches out of the zone, maybe a 4th OFer, sounds like a EY.

@Kenneth Meltsner R.A. Dickey was the ultimate reclamation project. Have to give guys a shot and see what they have left. Matsuzaka was ok at the end of last year. And he costs almost

nothing.

@Kenneth Meltsner Depends on how you define "lasting contributions" but Chris Capuano in 2011 and Chris Young in 2012 both had performances that were about as much as you can expect from guys on these kinds of deals. Byrd was a wild outlier, not unlike Dickey.

That is Daryl Strawberry's number. 16, 17, & 18 should all be retired on the Mets - Doc, Keith & Straw.

Kenneth Meltsner

@BringBackDaveTelgheCompletely agree. The guy had his best four games at the tail-end of a losing season when they meant nothing. Not unlike bringing back Miguel Batista on the strength of his meaningless final-game shutout of Cincinnati in 2012. You wanna say Dice-K is insurance, fine. But I'd hate to see him taking starts from one of our younger prospects.

nym4lyfe
nym4lyfe

@BringBackDaveTelghe One of those starts came against Fielder/Cabrera though. You won't find a combo like that in the NL, those 2 single handily ruined his #'s.

Bud Britton
Bud Britton

@bigslickyou want to retire the numbers of a short term mercenary and two guys that imploded their careers with extracurriculars and only brought us one championship, and that one only because the Blosox manager had a brain fart and didn't pull Buck out for a defensive sub. Keith was in the clubhouse when all this went down as well. Clearly you've lost your mind with Yankee envy...

bigslick
bigslick

From 1984 through 1990, the Mets were the best team in baseball and if we had the wild card back then, the Mets would have made the playoffs every year. That is the best seven year stretch this organization ever had and Doc, Keith and Strawberry were the three best players on that team.

And btw - if Buckner doesn't make that error, we go into extra innings......
