Mets sign Brooklyn-native 1B Chris Garcia to minor-league deal

The Mets have signed free-agent 1B Chris Garcia to a minor-league deal, the player said on Thursday (Twitter, Feb. 7).

Garcia, 26, who was born in Brooklyn, missed all of 2013 due to injury, but hit .285 with a .408 OBP in 411 at bats with Atlanta’s Single-A team in 2012.

He’s a career .330 hitter with a .435 OBP in six minor league seasons. He has yet to appear in a big-league game.

Of course he hit .330.  He was playing short season baseball at age 25 against 17 year olds.

Nice to see a Xaverian Clipper in the Mets system.

I wonder where he'll play. I assume Jayce Boyd will start in AA and Dykstra in AAA.

How does a guy with such a high average and high obp not move above single A?

Looked up his stats and he was signed young, went from Rookie ball to an independent league and was picked up by the Braves and moved onto their single A team.

He was a low draft choice and hadn't had many at bats as a youngster, therefore I have to figure he may have moved to independent ball as a financial move.

This guy has great stats, he could be a good pickup.
