Mets sign Bobby Abreu to minors deal

The Mets have signed OF Bobby Abreu to a minor-league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 40-year-old outfielder was in camp with the Phillies this spring, and hit .244 with a .404 OBP.

Abreu last played in the major leagues in 2012 with the Dodgers and Angels, appearing in 100 games with 257 plate appearances. He hit .242 with a .350 OBP, three home runs and 24 RBI.

Abreu played for Mets hitting coach Dave Hudgens in Venezuela in Winter Ball (DiComo, March 31).

If you have nothing nice to say about the Mets, then don't say it. You are not a true Mets fan either

If the NY Mets cared about their team and the fan base. They could have made a few moves during the offseason to convince their fans to return to the Stadium. My anger towards the Mets cannot be measured in words. It seems so simple to the average fan. Part 1- Why did we give Terry Collins an extension again? I'm trying to figure out why this man was rewarded? Winning under 80 games every year is not a success. Why not give Wally Backman a chance? Maybe we need some fire...a little trailor park in that dugout. Wally has won as a player, as a coach in Brooklyn, as a coach in the Minors...I don't get it- 1st base-  Ike Davis is the 1st baseman case closed- Bat him 7th everyday- Get me 20 Hr's- 90 Rbi's and were good. Lucas Duda- Back up player/DH- will hit 15 Hr's and add another 70 Rbi's. As for the catcher, Are you serious? We gave up a CY Young Award Pitcher for Travis? I'm so sick- And the SS. really This kid they have is a great backup- he's happy being a back up why stress him out- get a SS and let's move forward.

It's a zero sum signing IMO. It's a minor league deal so it costs next to nothing and who is he taking ABs away from on the 3A level at 1B? He's not playing OF. Besides, I'd be willing to bet hard currency that even at his advanced age Abreu could beat Davis, Duda, Brown and Satin in a foot race...now couple that with his .404 OBP from ST. Defensive reps at 1B with regular ABs (aka NL DH) if he gets into any shape, he could be helpful. But if he's not? WHO CARES???

paraphrasing Casey. Can anybody pinch in relief?

This signing is mind boggling to me. Management seems to be on a mission to make colossal fools of themselves.

i figured that two players who this move makes their futures on the major league staff to be somewhat concern . Andrew Brown to no fault of his own.or Lucas Duda .if Lucas does not hit they could bring up Abreu and send down Lucas to play full time in Las Vegas. I think Abreu played some first base over the last few years but he is no more then a one time a week player in the field.

This signing once again proves how ridiculous this ownership team really is. We clearly need help at SS and 1b. Instead, they waste money on another washed up loser. Anyone remember Marcum, Ankiel, Harang and Cowgill?

Now we also have superscrubs like Dice K and Lannan.

I see the Mets are continuing their efforts to get younger and more athletic.

Abreu 's On Base Pct. is what I think they like. High and consistent OBP is hard to come by. Only Wright, Satin and Duda have decent numbers in this dept. This is a good depth chart move.

I hear he can pitch lol. I used to like this guy but I just don't get this move! I understand trying to catch lightning in a bottle but we need another outfielder like we need another hole in our heads

If Eric Young dont start hitting and getting on base then I think Lagares should be the lead off man

Blame Arron Heilman...!!!! It's one game have faith. True mets fans always deal with the negitve. If your positive maybe our first basemen who is capable of hitting 35 to 40 home runs whould feel calm and relaxed and play like (Ike) instead of u sour puss fan base booing him on every strike he takes. Believe and cheer. Make it a season for Kiner. LETS GO METS!

What a bunch of negative fans why don't you go root for another team

There's a Met's shirt being sold that says: This team makes me Drink - long -season ahead for sure with Sandy Alderson predicting only 90 wins all season - Drink up!

For shame. You are a small market team so have some pride and act like it.

Meanwhile, the Abreu we didn't sign had a tremendous debut with the White Sox today.

No doubt. Throwing this out their.. If mets don't let Jaun get into offensive ability their going to mess up just like they did with Carlos Gomez. He's got an awesome glove let him swing the bat get two heavy hitters on the corners let JL do the rest

@Eamon Carty  Aaron Heilman is the biggest reason the mets did not go to the WS in 2006 and missed the playoffs in 2007 and 2008. if we made a list of most hated baseball players by mets fans he's number 1 in front of chipper and benitiez

I'm thinking about it.

@Zac Tindall  1.) it takes time away from our prospects 2.) we have 3 1B and 6 OF 3.) Byrd was 5 years younger and played in the majors the year before.

The only positive i can see is that he is a mentor

@DIY Degree  When Abreu has a huge year... I'll be the first to say I told you so... Cause I think it's going to turn out he's UNDERPAID.  But...  Until then, he hasn't proved anything. That said... I do think he would have instantly solved many problems.

@DIY Degree  I don't like the idea of spending tons of money on players who have never played in MLB.

@Eamon Carty  I see Lagares and Puello ( when he comes up ) having really good solid MLB careers. I just hope they give Lagares tons of playing time

We only have 3 outfielders on the AAA roster. At best Abreu is a mentor and pinch hitter in the bigs at some point. Cheap signing. He isn't going to impact anyone's AB's. We carried Baxter for 3 years as a pinch hitter.

@nyjnym @Zac Tindall  Wait... what?  As far as I know we have one 1B prospect and he's in like A ball. I wouldn't worry too much about this. And don't we have like 0 outfield prospects?

@Bryan McEntee  Or Lastings Millidge?  Gavin Ceccini and Reese Havens? Billy Traber and so so SO many more poor first round picks we've made?

We have nimmo and Vaughn I'm just saying abreu still has potential to help the team if he heats up and someone is underperforming
