Mets sign 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstop

The Mets have signed 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Kenny Hernandez for $1 million (MetsBadler, Aug. 14).

Hernandez is considered the No. 13 international prospect by Baseball America.

“Hernandez has a simple, low-maintenance swing from the left side with good bat speed and balance at the plate,” according to Badler. “He’s an offensive-oriented player who has showcased all around the infield, though most scouts seem to think he fits best at third base.”

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. It's time for me to find a new team.

LOL Maybe he plays in 6 years. The Mets spent on C.Young  and Granderson( a Yankee reject) instead of

the Chisox Cuban first baseman with over 30 hrs.

Lol ok Sandy seems like you should do nothing other then get someone to make us a champ now (whoever that is) So don't waste our time stocking up on & developing young talent just go out & buy a savior!

Sweet!  Someone else for the "Brain Trust", to tell the fans to wait for.  He'll be up soon!  Like 2020.

What happened to their interest in the no miss Cuban kid they were looking a just recentlyt? Kind of similar to a bait and switch you get from a used car sales guy.  No offense to this kid... Seen this picture time and time again... Didn't they just sign someone else for SS a few years ago.. I forget his name... Not meant as a joke... What happened to that other guy? Not that a million is a lot these days.. But they're balking at given Murphy more money? Sigh.

Hernandez sounds like another Wilmer Flores. Only time will tell what the kid will develop into.

In 6 years Flores will be in his prime...28/29 racking for someone...

Word on the street:  If you are 16 and play SS in Venezuela, CALL THE METS.

Sounds like Wilmer Flores to me. Teams must always be restocking their farm systems.

The Mets management must be itching to ruin his career in 6 years.

"Scouts say he profiles best at Third Base." David Wright's successor once his monster contract is up? Hmmm.

Couple years from now he'll be in Vegas with the scouts saying he's a liability at shortstop

@George Brezny Its not really that hard to find information about our minor leaguers if you're interested.  Perhaps you could look up DIlson Herrera?  If they decide to trade Murphy, it's because they think he's legit and they'd be better off spending Murphy's money to fill some other position of need.

@George Brezny You are probably thinking of Amed Rosario who is the starting SS for Brooklyn and is hitting .288. He is one of the youngest players at this level. I saw him on TV a few times he has a great swing for an 18 year old. He is three years away at least.

@Zach Goeringer Terry will probably still be around then to have him sit on the bench for 2 weeks at a time....

@saxon And?  The most athletic guys usually start at SS before moving to other positions.  Wilmer Flores even started that way.  (what he's still playing SS in the majors??...really?)

@dave42  A top int'l FA?? Top 13? Why not sign the top 5 so that maybe for once that player is a sure thing instead of a future project like Flores.

@4EverMets @dave42 I didn't think they were going to get anyone in the top 30 this year.  Sometimes people think they're just smarter than everyone else (with regard to scouting especially)
