Mets are interested in Ackley, but he’s not likely to be traded

The Mets, Yankees and Padres have asked the Mariners about 2B Dustin Ackley (Heyman, Dec. 10).

9:30 am: Ackley is popular, teams ask about him often, “which is typical at this time of year,” but he’s not likely to be traded, a person close to the team said late Tuesday (Cerrone).

Ackley, 25, is arbitration eligible each of the next three seasons, after which he can be a free agent.

He .253 with a .319 OBP, .660 OPS, 18 doubles, four HR and 31 RBI in 113 games for the Mariners. He’s played second base, first and outfield during his professional career.

God some of the comments on here are scary. I'm a Mets fan who lives in Seattle and I get to see the M's play a lot...Ackley quickly became my least favorite player on a team I didn't care about. He is useless, can't hit himself out of a wet paper bag. If we traded Ike for him, we would be the big time losers in that trade and that is saying A LOT!

Ackley is what could have been for Reese Havens. If the dice rolled straight, today he'd be an awful major leaguer kicking around with no position, instead of an awful career minor leaguer.

Check out Madden, klapish and Sherman articles today. Saying what we've been saying for four years

ackley is like a Murphy clone.

Why is there no reporting on the articles bashing the Mets management this morning by Joel Sherman and Bob Klapisch??????

Last time I checked, the guys with the higher numbers in the hitting categories, ie avg, HR, runs, RBI, steals, doubles, hits are the better players.

Does Ackley play SS??? What am I missing here?

Murph>Ackley

If Murph was a free agent and Ackley was on our team we'd kill to get him.

P.S  This new comment format is horrible and I hope fewer and fewer people visit metsblog as a result and they realize mistake and go back to former format.

"The Mets are interesting in ______________, but..."

A.  Player is unlikely to be traded

B.  Player wants more than a one year contract

C.  The Mets have yet to reach out to player or players agent

D.  Player has the nerve to expect to be paid market value

thought it was weird, I like Ackley but didn't he play CF last year

Wasn't this guy a character in 'Catcher in the Rye?'  Why the hurry to sign a light-hitting second-baseman?

Ackley has never adjusted to major league pitching.  It was impressive that he went from playing 1st base in college to 2nd in the majors in about 2 years.  Once pitchers found out he couldn't hit the slider though, it was game over.  He's better defensively than Murphy, but his ceiling offensively at this point is probably a notch below what Murphy gives us now.  I don't see a point to this without it being contingent on several other moves.

I'd be happy with that, if he's avaiable.

Without knowing what the deal is I can't get too excited one way or the other about ackley

Post-Hype sleeper prospect ?    I don't see why we would want EYJ w/out the speed.

Flores has got faster this off season, and wasn't able to get a look at 2B this off season because of his ankle

if we do trade Murphy, i want to see Flores at 2B, we could really use his bat in the lineup

i think with spring training focusing at 2B he will be fine

Is Wilmer Flores still on this team? Last year, he was talked about constantly, now it's as if he doesn't exist, even in trade talks. I understand Ackley has a big upside, but how about moving Murphy to fill a position that this team needs filled and seeing what Flores can do at 2B?

@rico yeah except murphy hit .290 last year. also hit 40 doubles, played in every game, drove in 80 rbi (out of the 2 hole).

i guess they aren't alike too much. why are we trying to trade murphy? oh yeah $5 mil for murphy makes as much sense as 10-11 mil for jose abreu in this market apparently

sometimes the logic of the mets really baffles me. nothing against you rico, but i feel like mets fans underestimate murph so much and i don't understand why. he isn't perfect, but he isn't part of the problem if you ask me. guys like tejada, duda, ike, etc are. if the mets are serious about improving the team, they should keep filling holes and pushing to trade these guys, and if they can't then just drop them and move on. if they gotta try anyone at first, why not a platoon of ike/flores? haven't heard too much of them splitting time

@Calamity Francis $3-4 mil cheaper than Murphy.  Yes, $3-4 mil.  The things this team would do to save a lousy $3-4 mil.

He was a top pick, and a TOP prospect - still very young.  Could  fulfill what the expectations were when he came up.  Sometimes prospects take a year or 2 to get it going.

@Calamity Francis I was going to ask the same thing being they don't want to pay our own arbitration but take on Ackley for three years of arbitration.

too funny - craig carton this AM was telling a story about how when he met jeff wilpon he told him if you truly love the team you should sell it, lol .  that's why jeff wont go on the boomer and carton show, cause he knows they will tell him to sell on the air.

@indianamet Nah, if Murphy was a free agent, we'd do nothing.  Just like we did nothing with Peralta when we can't pony up $53 mil for 4 years.

@chasesimms Metsblog and realizing their mistake do not belong in the same sentence. As soon as MMO gets disqus, a lot of us will be gone.

@shaun Agree, more than a couple of notches below though....we can do better if Murphy is traded.

I'm not saying Ackley is good but EYJ was one of the worst batters in all of baseball last year aside from his steals. Considering he'd be below average at 2b, I fail to see the love this guy is getting.

Like Kevin Burkhardt said, show me when Turner didn't hustle. And even if he didn't, they were very unprofessional for going public with it. You wanna let him go, let him go, but don't throw him under the bus.

Still not sure why we didn't tender Justin a contract.  Now we have to carry a backup shortstop.

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

I love Wilmer's bat and am confident he can hit in this league. But he's gotta play the corner.  He's a bit slow of foot but has good hands.  Unless he hits .350, you'll always talk about his glove.

Ziggy Jones
Ziggy Jones

@nymess if you want flores in there so badly why not just play him at first and keep murphy at 2nd? murphy provides more than ike or duda, and he's cheaper than most 2b out there (who aren't under the age of 25)

MMO?  What's' that?  If they get disqus i'm there.

is mmo getting disqus??? that would be awesome

@BringBackDaveTelghe Ackley hit about as well as EYJ did last year.  Not sure why this front office drools over guys that can't hit .250.

@stemog Same thing with Tejada... they bash him and now it's looking more and more likely that he will be back as the starting SS because they are too cheap to find an alternative.

JC

we already do have a backup SS - Tejada

nymess

@NYMetsLander ...maybe big is an exaggeration at this point, but he's a 25 year old who was 2nd pick overall and projected to be one of the better offensive 2B's in the league.

nymess
nymess

@Ziggy Jones @nymess I don't think Flores or Murphy have bats the profile for 1B. I've always liked Murphy and think he's been sold short in these discussions, but he's one of the players on this team that they're willing to deal and who actually has value to other teams. Plus, his departure would also mean money freed up to make other moves.

With Flores working on his quickness, if his bat can be as good as advertised, and his defense average, I don't see why it isn't worth a shot.

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

I think ultimately Flores lands at first.  I might start him in AAA and give him all of the reps there.  You could easily start the season with Duda/Davis and Stain at first.  Ackley over Murphy is a defensive move, a must with a young staff.

Oh, Ruben, we was only kiddin'.

@Agee's Catch
Our lineup looks alot less intimidating w/ Ackley in Murphy's place. IMO
I agree w/ the Flores assessment.
And I will now refer to Josh Satin only as "Stain".  haha
