Mets send Pedro Beato to Red Sox for Kelly Shoppach

The Mets announced that Pedro Beato was acquired by the Red Sox on a waiver claim to complete their trade for C Kelly Shoppach.

The Mets acquired Shoppach earlier this week for a player to be named later.

The Mets acquired Beato via the Rule 5 draft in 2010. Beato spent the entire 2011 season on the Major League roster, but spent the first part of this season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. He spent most of this season with Triple-A Buffalo and made just seven appearances with the Mets, pitching to a 10.38 ERA in just 4 1/3 innings.

Overall, Beato is 2-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 67 Major League games.

The Mets 40-man roster now stands at 39.

Matthew Cerrone, MetsBlog.com:

For whatever reason, I had heard rumblings lately that Beato was likely to be released this fall anyway, so it makes sense that he’d be shipped to the Red Sox in this deal. Frankly, between the two, I’d rather Shoppach is in the mix to see what he’s about, how he handles Matt Harvey and to see if he fits in for 2013.

Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:

Outside of a couple of months last season, Beato really never found the consistency he needed to succeed at the big league level. He has great stuff, but it’s clear he wasn’t really in the plans going forward. And so I’m not going to lose sleep over Beato being the price to acquire Shoppach, who can potentially fill a need next season.
