Mets draft summary, day two

The second day of the 2011 amateur draft began at 12 PM ET today.

In the second round of the 2011 amateur draft, the Mets have selected RHP Cory Mazzoni as the 71st overall pick.

Mazzoni, who is listed at 6-1, 194 pounds, is a junior at North Carolina State University. In 16 starts this season, he is 6-6 with a 3.30 ERA with 137 strikeouts in 114 2/3 innings.

In his senior year in high school, he went 7-2 with a 1.13 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings.

According to Jim Callis of Baseball America, Mazzoni throws up to 97 mph with a hard breaking ball.

Meanwhile, in the third round of the draft, they selected RHP Logan Verrett as the 101st overall pick.

Verrett, who is listed at 6-3, 185 pounds, is a junior at Baylor University. He’s made 17 appearances and 15 starts this season, and he’s 7-6 with a 2.93 ERA with 31 walks and 96 strikeouts in 101 1/3 innings.

In the fourth round, the Mets selected RHP Tyler Pill, a junior from Cal State Fullerton as the 132nd overall pick.

Pill is listed at 6-1, 185 pounds and is 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA with 110 strikeouts in 98 innings over 17 appearances and 15 starts in 2011. He’s also hit .323 with a .435 on base percentage with one home run and 30 RBI in 155 at bats this season.

In the fifth round, the Mets selected LHP Jack Leathersich, a junior at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell as the 162nd overall pick.

Leathersich is listed at 6-0, 205 pounds and is 6-2 with a 1.62 ERA with 126 strikeouts in just 89 innings over 13 appearances and 12 starts in 2011.

In the sixth round, the Mets selected OF Joe Tuschak, a senior from Northern York High School in Pennsylvania.

In 24 games this season, Tuschak has hit .487 with nine home runs and 30 RBI in 78 at bats.

In the seventh round, the Mets selected 1B Cole Frenzel, a sophomore from the University of Arizona.

Frenzel is listed at 6-1, 214 pounds. In 224 at bats this season, Frenzel has hit .353 with a .467 on base percentage with three home runs and 48 RBI.

In the eighth round, the Mets selected SS Daniel Muno a senior from Fresno State University.

Muno is listed at 5-11, 180 pounds. In 205 at bats this season, Muno has hit .346 with three home runs and 52 RBI.

In the ninth round, the Mets selected LHP Alexander Panteliodis, a junior from the University of Florida.

Panteliodis is listed at 6-2, 230 pounds. He’s 6-2 with a 3.76 ERA in 16 appearances and ten starts, with 44 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings this season.

In the tenth round, the Mets selected RHP Matthew Budgell, a senior from Woodbridge High School in Irvine, California.

Budgell is listed at 6-4, 155 pounds. He is 2-4 with a 4.02 ERA in 40 innings this season.

In the 11th round, the Mets selected RHP Christian Montgomery, a senior from Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Through May 30, Montgomery had pitched to a 4.40 ERA this season.

In the 12th round, the Mets selected LHP Kenny Mathews, a senior in High School from Diamond Bar, California.

Mathews was 5-4 with a 1.23 ERA this season, striking out 80 in 62 innings this season.

In the 13th round, the Mets selected RHP Robert Gsellman, a senior from Westchester High School in Los Angeles, California.

Gsellman went 3-4 with a 1.70 ERA this season, striking out 80 batters in 61 2/3 innings.

In the 14th round, the Mets selected C Xorge Carillo, a senior at Arizona State University.

Carillo is listed at 6-1, 239 pounds. In 30 games this season, Carillo has hit .330 with one home run and 24 RBI.

In the 15th round, the Mets selected SS Phillip Evans La Costa Canyon High School in San Diego, California.

Evans hit .392 with seven home runs and 34 RBI this past season.
