Jose Valverde

Mets release Jose Valverde

The Mets released Jose Valverde, Sandy Alderson announced after Monday’s game.

Valverde surrendered four earned runs in Monday’s game. He entered with the Mets leading 2-1.

He posted a 5.66 ERA, with two saves, over 20 innings.

Vic Black is expected to be called up from Triple-A to replace Valverde on the roster.

How is it that pretty much EVERYONE on this site, as well as Met fans EVERYWHERE knew this was a poor signing from Day One?  Did anyone in Sandy's elite management cadre believe Valverde GOT BETTER after his collective meltdowns with the Tigers? And how in the world do you allow him to ruin not only the 8th but 9th inning? Yeah, the options were limited but maybe you keep Vic Black, who hasn't worked, and save Valverde for the inevitable blow-out. And Terry's comments just emphasized his cluelessness. The guy had exactly one (1) good outing with the team. I really don't care about his 'level of professionalism.' He should never have been signed in the first place. That tells you all you need to know about Sandy as a judge of talent.

This was so long overdue.  I've been wishing for Hudgins and Valverde to be fired, since forever.

NOW, they need to fire Terry Collins and Reubin Tajada.

And, if it's not asking too much, can the Mets / SNY also rid themselves of the ever pathetic Keith Hernandez???

Make Hernandez the hitting coach; as that is his strength; and no one really cares about who his favorite Hooters waitress is. Or what he drinks at Happy Hour at the Mets motel.

Keith is horrendous as an announcer. BUT  .  .  .

He is wonderful, when compared to the entire announcing staff of the Philadelphia Philthies. 0 Now, they are the true personification of eternally pathetic.

Now we need to get rid of Duda and C Young and either play Campbell or find a real legit 1B and continue to play Flores at SS. We will have to trade a pitcher for a bat!!!! Lets GOOOO

How is it that Valverde can be on the verge of being cut but ALSO be the closer for the night? So part of your mind thinks the guy stinks and the other part of your mind thinks he's your best option to close out the game? How can those 2 thoughts coexist?

Thank God.  Sandy, here's a simple heuristic:  only 1 fat guy on the team at a time.   Doesn't anybody look at the conditioning regimes of these balls 'o lard?   It should be obvious that excess weight and performance do not go together.   I don't care what people say about CC Sabathia (and oh, maybe the knee thingy is a result of the stress of all that lard  on it) - he would be a better pitcher if he stayed away from the Oreos during his career.

Thank god he's gone, but I'm still very angry, for they've waited to let him go UNTIL he cost us another game. He should've been released a long ago, and we would have won the game last night! I can't believe how this FO cuts those 'Alderson's guys' too much slack!

It's time to bite the bullet and release Chris Young, Bobby Abreu, Lucas Duda and Scott Rice. BRING UP THE KIDS!!!!! If we are going to lose, let's give some kids some MLB experience. While we're at it, get Wally up here where he belongs. New blood is required!!!

I just watched Terry Collins upset about Valverde release because he really liked him. Now I know Terry really is clueless about winning .   His pitching moves today is also quite alarming.   I noticed he didn't keep Familia in to pitch to Ike Davis in the 8th inning, after he pitched to only 1 batter in the 7th inning.  Instead he used Scott Rice in the next inning to pitch to Ike Davis..  but Pirates replaced Ike Davis with Gaby Sanchez... (reminder note: Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez.. "didn't Gaby Sanchez used to kill the Mets when he played for the Marlins).  Results Gaby Sanchez.2 hits. 1) Homer ... and 2) Game winning hit..   Terry Collins you can join Valverde.. bye bye.. !!

Not even two months in to the season, and we've already released two pitchers that were our closer at some point.  How does that happen?  The closer is supposed to be your best reliever, and we're trotting guys out there that are a few bad outings away from being released

When your talent is borderline, all your decisions need to be spot on and Alderson has made a lot of mistakes. Can anyone explain why we couldn't give LaTroy Hawkins $2.5 million for one year but we could give Chris Young $7.5 million for one year and Colon $20 million for two years?

Maybe John Smoltz will come back for the veteran minimum. I don't know how he missed out on Manny.

@metsblog i was hoping this might happen after seeing his recent disasters on the field. Enjoy the time off!

No interview with Valverde? From anyone?

Love our intrepid New York sports "media" these days. Look like ol' Jay cut everybody off due to the "controversy."

Sad, sad, sad.

Alderson is an idiot! Did he really think he would make it through the season with the garbage he picked up to pitch in the bullpen. Between Valverde, Farnsworth and Lannan they have cost the Mets like 10 losses. Oh yeah I forgot the other piece of garbage Parnell, who sucks even more than these guys and was suppose to be there closer. Really Alderson nice fail in putting together a bullpen for the third straight year.

Finally one of the things that made the New York Mets successful in the 80s. Was Davie Johnson. Why? Because he was the AAA manager with all those young players he knew exactly how to manage them I believe the mats need to do the same thing with Wally Backman

The last couple of seasons I gave the Wilpon family a pass, they built NY a beautiful new stadium which is absolutely fabulous. They were also were victims of a horrible financial scheme. But now it's time to either push your chips in the middle and compete for a title or sell the team. It's not fair to the millions of New York Met fans around this country and of course in the great state of New York to have to watch them operate as if they were the Kansas City Royals.

We will be lucky if Syndegaard isn't the next Tommy John suurgery candidate. Forearm discomfort for a power pitcher is not "mild" concern territory.

TC has never had the talent, but he really didn't do enough to shake these guys up. As the offense collapses you have to start sitting guys, moving guys in the batting order. He has to be on a short leash if things don't change quickly.

I would say Alderson is in trouble and that would be true on most other teams. He has done some good things in the minors, but he has had a bad season so far with Valverde, Lannan, Farnsworth, Chris Young and mixed value from Colon.well that and you would need quality ownership and we know that ship sailed a long time ago.

So we send Jose out for the 9th and he just brings more gas to the mound and he blows the game, we leave Bobby in right and he cannot make ( a difficult) catch and runners advance and of course we leave a small army of baserunners on all weekend and now the GM has had enough!.  I say good for him and I hope pink slips are all around Citi Field.

Well, this one just had to happen.  So long, Valverde - loved your enthusiasm.  Your arm?  Not so much.

I understand Valverde had an option that if he was on the team on May 27th, he was due a bonus.  Just kidding, but this kind of stuff is typical of this organization these days....

Been watching my Mets since 1962 and this is really getting hard to watch. And that is saying something considering the Mets history. How could Terry send him out for the 9th? I would have taken my chances with Edgins or Torres. Can't worry about how many innings they could give you if Valverde can't get past the 9th. If the first Pirate didn't try to bunt for a hit and pop up he wouldn't have recorded an out. I always liked Terry but lately I am losing faith. We kept Duda instead of Ike cause no one would trade for Duda and they could save some more money trading Ike. The team needs to be sold to someone that is willing to spend like a big market team!!

ChittyField is a Jonah (any person or thing regarded as bringing bad luck.) Visiting teams have no problem producing runs and we are LUCKY to score 2 runs a game at home... Hmm!

No name given - Why not????

Valverde sucks and in comparison, he's better than what we disappointingly call The Executive Branch of the US Government.

I bet that obama is actually worse than Valverde at pitching; as obama sucks at everything.

Andrew Lavan

@barbarossa Not really. He was signed to a minor-league contract. Pitched well enough to make the team, but fell off from there.

@Frank Toy - With Mejia out he decides that Valverde is his best option to close :-S 2 weeks ago Collins was talking about how Familia was close to taking the closers role. I THOUGHT you usually put your best reliever into that role. So yesterday he decides the best use of Familia was to get ONE out. He KNEW he had a short pen so why use you best available arm for ONE out but then try to get 4 outs from a guy that was obviously on the verge of being cut anyway?

Collins seemed smug and sarcastic when questioned about Valverde "he was my closer, I thought that's when you put your closer in". THe follow up should have been, "wait, WHAT?" The team JUST cut him so unless it was a kneejerk reaction you obviously felt that he wasn't performing well BEFORE this game so why on earth was he your closer for that day?

Glenn Blasius
Glenn Blasius

@Frank Toy  I would FAR prefer Familia to Rice pitching to just about anybody.  But the issue might have been something else, such as innings management, etc.

Terry (like Jerry Manuel) is a stranger to mathematics.   "Win Probability Added" should be in any managers repertoire.  Hell, they should write an app for that.  However, this one is simple:  the win probability of Familia pitching to anybody >> win probability added of Scott Rice.

The Scott Rice story was nice...for about 1/2 season.  THere's a reason why he toiled in the minors for as long as he did.    And being a LOOGY is not going to give him a place to hide.

@Frank Toy  Not only that what is Bobby Abreu doing in left field at the end of the game? that ball dropped right in front of him, he is too old and slow forget him even diving for it. even if he missed it the run scores anyway. Collins is the worst manager when it come to pitching changes and in game management.

@hurricaneditka - My point EXACTLY. You save your best pitcher for the last 3 outs. Why use Familia for ONE out and then try to get the last 4 with a guy that's apparently ONE bad outing from being released? Then Collins acts like it's a ridiculous to question his usage there, "I THOUGHT that's when you use your closer". The follow up  from the media should have been "so wait, BEFORE this outing you thought he was your best pitcher on that day but after this bad outing you decided he was your worst pitcher?"

Frank Toy
Frank Toy

@mystere24 Talent is borderline because GM and Owner and everyone else is clueless. Even though he is injured I wanted to get Jose Abreu at first base to start building. But Sandy said he had too much Talent at First Base ?? (WTH)  and check out Marlon Byrd and Nelson Cruz ..  I don't watch the Mets any more but when I do I expect them to lose..

Frank Toy
Frank Toy

@dagr33k Thats funny I forgot Lannan..  3 hr in 4 innings pitched.  15.75 ERA..  Parnell is ok if he uses his breaking ball off speed pitches.  His fastball is straight so it gets fouled off or gets hit hard and far.  so he throws about 10 pitches per batter it seems..

metsfanman
metsfanman

@dagr33k Parnell had ERAs in 2012 and 2013 of 2.49 and 2.16 respectively. Don't agree that he sucks as a pitcher. Do agree that given that Parnell was coming off of injury, Alderson needed to do a better job of not relying too much on him and surrounding Parnell with better arms in the bullpen around him.

Except they don't have to balls to even consider it. More and more it seems like Alderson was brought in for a few reasons. I think they thought he gave some legitimacy  to a clueless organization. I think they thought he could figure out a way to be competitive on a small market budget and I think they know he knows how to stand up to the pressure of the NY Media. Notice how winning isn't on that list?

These morons don't deserve a pass. There were a lot of rumblings about Madoff in the financial markets about how he could consistently beat the market like he was claiming to do. They also built a beautiful stadium with no tributes to their OWN championship team. It seemed as though they were trying to lure the Dodgers back to town by building them a stadium. THere WAS a tribute to Jackie Robinson but none to Tom Seaver? Nothing to indicate the team had won a championship in 1986?

Fred Wilpon couldn't possibly care less about the fans of this team. He couldn't care less that the whole fanbase despises him. If you think it's bad now wait until he passes the team onto his son who really seems to believe that he has earned his position. Look no further than to Jeff if you were curious how a NEW YORK team has it's highest minor league team playing close to 3,000 miles away in Las Vegas.

You do realize that where many people ended up losing their life savings the Wilpons netted a profit on Madoff. I think plausibly deniable conspirator is a much better term than victim.

Met fan since 1964... Can't agree with you more regarding today's pitching fiasco... You could see Collins hadno  faith in Valverde, and tired of them protecting guys like Mejia... If he is your closer... He should have been in... Use to watch Tug, McDowell, and Jesse go two three innings and come in the next day... I am sure Ike told his new teammates to give it time... their bullpen will implode... having it seen it hundreds of times over the past four years, at least...Guys like Rice are a nice story but no where close to what they need to have in the bullpen... Sad.

Glenn Blasius
Glenn Blasius

@Frank Toy LOL.  You nailed it.  Terry seems to need someone with "Closer" written on a placard hung over his neck in order to think properly.   He is such a nice man...but not the brightest light in the room.

@Frank Toy @mystere24 - Well they had a "logjam" at 1b remember? What they REALLY needed was a plumber to clear that "logjam"! They should have flushed those 3 turds and gone hard after Abreu. If they could have gotten Granderson for TWO years I'd have been ok with it but 4 seemed like way too big of a risk and 7.5 fro Chris Young seemed insane to me. Did he really have anyone beating down his door after the disaster of a year he had for Oakland? That seemed like a Minaya deal where he was bidding against himself. He was coming off a year where he hit .200 with 40 RBI. THe year before he hit .230 with 41 RBI. Is that any better than a replacement level player would give you? If they had run den Dekker out there every day would the numbers look a lot different?

@George Brezny Rice WAS a nice story but the Mets treat situational lefties like they're disposable. Rice had never pitched NEARLY that much in his life. If Mejia is part of the future then he should have been given the day off but why was Familia used for ONE out then? I have a hard time understanding the pecking order. Valverde who was obviously one bad outing from being cut was your top guy? You knew you had a short pen with Dice-K and Mejia being unavailable so how do you justify using Familia for ONE out?

Kavalor
Kavalor

@George Brezny

sorry can't agree there with protecting Mejija - he piched in both games of the doubleheader - pretty much every closer would have been unavailable in this situation.
