The Mets plan to buy out Johan Santana‘s 2014 option in the next couple of days (Rubin, Oct. 31).
According to multiple reports, the option year is worth $25 million, while the buyout is $5.5 million.
The Mets won’t rule out re-signing Santana this winter, according to team insiders, but if they did bring him back it would be with similarly low expectations (Martino, Oct. 17), like was the case with Chris Young and Shaun Marcum when they were signed.

Oct. 17: It may just be that he wants a new environment, a new crop of media and fans, a new buzz and different expectations to carry him through. I wouldn’t begrudge that, and I wouldn’t bet against him. He’s a dedicated, creative workhorse, whom I would love to see again on the Mets, but I understand has probably pitched his last game in blue and orange.
