Bartolo Colon stands at the plate

Mets pitchers don’t have a hit yet

Mets pitchers are a combined 0-for-51 at the plate, which is a new major league record, according to Elias Sports Bureau (NY Post, May 5).

Bartolo Colon is hitless in nine at bats with six strikeouts. Jenrry Mejia is 0-for-15. Dillon Gee is 0-for-12. Zack Wheeler is 0-for-8.

Jon Niese is 0-for-4, but also has four walks and a .500 on-base percentage.

This is the least of their problems. They desperately need a new manager.

If they have problems bunting, Bartolo Colon can teach them how.

As long as they can lay down a bunt.

I just don't understand, if colon stands in the box, his belly totally covers the plate, he should have a 1000 obp ???

I remember Don Cardwell. That guy could hit. Last year Met pitchers were consistently unable to lay-down a bunt when needed. Someone earlier pointed-out that it shows a lack of fundamentals (or 'fundies,' as Keith would say). Have to agree.

A typical Mets "World Record" - don't we have like thousands of other negative baseball "World Records"? Why should our pitchers' hitting be any different?

Best hitting Mets pitchers -- man, we're really hurting if that's where we're looking for offense -- from what I remember, Mike Hampton and Tom Seaver were pretty good.  I remember watching Gooden take a ton of batting practice during spring training in 1987, and thinking it wasn't a good sign.

Mets pitchers respond:  "We are just trying to make Reuben Tejada look good."

Gooden, Aguilera, Darling, Terrell, et. al. would take turns in the batting cages together.  Darling clobbered the ball in college.  Pitchers are usually the best athletes on the team, and have hit at other levels - there is no reason they shouldn't be given time to work on their hitting, too.  Bartolo said, "I can heet."  Put your money where your Twinkie is, big fella ...

Who cares? The real problem is that Wheeler has to figure things out on the mound. Colon is a temporary filler and Mejia is probably a back end starter. But I'm getting itchy to see Montero and Syndergaard, at this point. Wheeler is not moving forward as I'd hoped. Sure, Colorado's a hot team but Wheeler was coming off a dominating performance and he needed to build on that. His walks are up , his WHIP is up, and he's too hittable.

I know he has it in him but he needs to stop working on himself and just pitch. I'll chalk some of it up d'Arnaud and the lack of a veteran catcher to bring him along, but that's where, in my opinion, Warthen is failing to fill the gap.

Mets shouldn't let anything distract them.

And a DH in the National league would "hurt" the game

Pitchers don't want to hit. They don't work on it during spring training or during the season. Why do people want to watch them hit? For the integrity of the game?

Well, it is sort of newsworthy considering the Mets broke a MLB record for going this long.

It is typical of a Terry team lacking in preparation and fundamentals. The bunting is worse. Daniel Murphy was a fiasco.

Billy Martin would have them all take bunting and hitting practice , but we got TC and he's a know it all!

The Mets pitchers so far are hitless for the season. I'm sure someone on

this blog will blame it on the hitting coach and that he should be fired.

There's so much internet I like to use and different stuff to do, if the mets pitchers wanna move these games along, thanks and get rid of the Dh. It's a great game but it doesn't need to be a time consuming contest.

Who cares ... they pitching good and we only 2 games outta first place.. they're called pitchers not hitters for a reason!

Niese has looked locked in at the plate even thoughI saw a few questionable strikes go against him . I think it'll be Niese first then Wheeler then probably Gee and then Mejia. I don't know if Colon will actually get one.

I think they need to start a pool.  Every out, each pitcher puts in $10, first to get a hit gets the lot.

As long as they pitch well, it doesn't matter.

@doubleday  Some of them can certainly hit. Gooden was always fun at the plate. Santana could hit. Now the money has gotten bigger, so people wanna protect pitchers. However, I think having a weak out in the lineup is protecting pitcher's arms. Whether they can hit or not, the batting pitcher is actually great for the game on many levels. Most important ones being, maintaining the game's history, and not dragging out the game 4-5 hours for a rule improvement that didn't actually improve.  Just pandered to people who didn't really like the game as much as they think they do.

Montero and Syndergaard aren't really pitching well enough to warrant a call-up yet.

@duras23  It's not wanting pitchers to hit as much as not wanting DH's TOO hit. The pitcher can stand there and not swing. That's fine. It MOVES THE GAME ALONG.We're living in internet times and baseball shouldnt be more time consuming now by adding a DH. Plus many of the AL pitchers get tore up because the lineups are so stacked.

So it was Terry's fault that the ball Gee drilled to center yesterday just happened to find a fielder? Doesn't your stupidity embarrass you sometimes?

The problem is their outs count just as much as everyone else's.  They have to do a better job hitting, bunting and fielding or its going to cost us games.

They are paid to play baseball. Including hitting fielding and be available to to pinch run. Just Because sandy is a moron and signs Colon who is useless in the field and at bat. He signs Grandy for right field when a novice would know he doesn't  have the arm for RF. Sandy thinks positions arms and managers are unimportant.

@dave42 and if you get a walk you take $20 out and if you successfully sacrifice you take $10 out

I really wish our GM and Manager knew more, but unfortunately, not everyone can be as wise as you.

@72tilltc  Would you rather have Micah Owings who is a terrible pitcher but a great hitter or Justin Verlander who is a great pitcher but a terrible hitter/
