Mets outscored 22-4 after first inning against Nats

The Mets outscored the Nationals, 6-0, during the first inning this past series against the Nationals.

However, the Nationals outscored the Mets, 22-4, through the rest of the innings.

Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Bartolo Colon pitched 18 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (4.94 ERA). Their bullpen let up 12 runs in 9.1 innings (11.86 ERA).

“We’ve got to come out of that bullpen and we’ve got to start throwing some strikes,” Terry Collins said after Thursday’s series finale. “When we’re successful, it’s because you make the other team swing the bat. Not that they can’t get a hit, but when you’re behind in the count, you’re going to get in trouble in this league.”

Now that's some brilliant Tony LaRussa-like thinking from Terry.  You watch his expression on the bench it looks like someone is giving him a painful and unwanted DRE. Maybe he can actually pull some answers out of his lower colon. Where is the ACCOUNTABILITY?

We have become the Raiders of baseball...the Royals fans feel bad for us...we are pathetic..and Travis D'Arnaud is the worst catcher in the league..

Now how about an apology from the Wilpons to the fans for successfully wrecking one half of New York baseball five years and counting?

Someone mentioned that Collin's might be hoping for a rainout tonight.  At this point the only thing that could get the Mets out of this tenuous situation would be a Noah-esque flood.

I see Boomer Esiason issued an apology to Murphy...

Now how about the OWNERSHIT, I mean Ownership, issues an apology to the fans for Lying About Everything, and running our Team straight into the sewer?

Relax.  Here's why:

Travis d'Arnaud = Joe Mauer

Ruben Tejada = Jose Reyes healthy

Lucas Duda = Freddie Freeman

Chris Young/Eric Young Jr platoon = Rickey Henderson/Roger Cedeno circa 1999

Scott Rice/Carlos Torres = Dennis Cook/Turk Wendell circa 1999

Context when debating performance is important.  I think the question that needs to be asked and argued is what team has actually done a worse job in the last 4 year of assembling a 40 man roster?  I look forward to your comments.

I honestly think even if the Mets are 1-10 in the first 11 games ..Collins will still be here..and so will Krusty..oops..i mean Sandy.

Alderson screwing up the bullpen...AGAIN. You know, in the real world, they fire people for this many failures.

Sandy should resign and take the part of ''Red'' in a new movie about that ''70's show....LOL.Think about it Ruben Tejeda could be Fez!

Its simple... if the Wilpons cant improve this team or wont they should sell it to someone who can instead of letting fans down every year.

Everyone except MURPHY poorly performed last year, so this is what you will get. No prospects and no money spent. To put an offence on the field you must at the very least have one or the other.

OK Sandy defenders. Here's a question. What could he possibly do to make you lose faith in his decisions? He's been in the role for 4 years without winning even 80 games, the best thing they have in their system is a recovering ace he didn't draft, and he has fielded some of the worst line-ups in Met history, without any depth and a terrible bullpen. This is all after four years of so called progress. Please assuage my concerns and tell me I'm wrong.

"We've got to hit the ball."

"We've got to throw strikes"

"We have to score runs"

"we need to play defense"

"We need to stop the other team from scoring runs"

...all things I learned at the age of 5.  Terry's post game comments are

extremely sophomoric...how about "we are going to do ________ to achieve _____."  I feel that he has no plan but to just wait until next year.  I guess that's why he got an extension for two years - because he has the same philosophy as the rest of the organization...

I wasn't surprised by this news at all, and I figured it meant the Nats scored 22 in the first inning of a game. That's where we're at with this franchise. The only thing that made me doubt that was the idea that the Mets could score 4 runs in the first inning.

wow look at that stat i mean after 3 games that stat has real validity. lets start slicing up more stats. after 3 games how are the Mets from the 6th inning and on vs LHP or look at RISP numbers right now. come on don't be so stupid Mets blog this post is just beyond foolish.

**EXCERPT FROM AN ARTICLE ABOUT THOR... PLEASE NOTE THE LAST SENTENCE/QUOTE BY WHEELER!!!- HE KNOWS WINNING IS NOT A PRIORITY, AS DOES THIS ENTIRE ROSTER!!!!**

Why trade two to three months of his rookie season for another year of low-cost team control? So he waited, languishing at Triple-A Las Vegas.

By June, the days became longer. The deadline to avoid becoming a Super-2 player — an unsettled line that allows rookies with the top 22 percent of service time to earn arbitration a year early — had nearly past. He knew he would be called up soon, but he did not know the exact day and that made it harder.

"I came to understand," Wheeler said. "But as a player you want to help the team win and I know there’s a business side of baseball, but sometimes you gotta overlook that. If you really want the team to win, you gotta do what you gotta do.

OK, let's all make uneducated snap judgments about an 0-3 team. Ready...GO! I'll save everyone some mindless analysis:

1) Fire everyone

2) Where's Omar Minaya

3) Everyone sucks

4) Fire everyone

tullydew
tullydew

Only Sandy Alderson could make Omar look like Einstein.

Jack Butler
Jack Butler

What has Sandy Alderson done for this team? Omar Minaya drafted David Wright. Minaya drafted Matt Harvey. So far Alderson has traded R.A. Dickey for Travis d'Arnaud (looks like a bust) and Syndergaard (we'll see). He traded Beltran for Wheeler (doesn't look like an ace), and traded Angel Pagan for Andres Torres. We've started 3 different first basement in our first 3 games when Kendrys Morales is ...still out there. He let Reyes walk and trusted Ruben Tejada to take over at shortstop. Bobby Parnell and Chris Young both played exactly one inning this year and are now on the DL. He's never been able to build even a respectable bullpen (Frank Francisco, John Rauch, Ramon Ramirez, Brandon Lyon, Scott Atchison, DJ Carrasco, Manny Acosta) And he signed 40-year old Bartolo Colon to a $20M contract when there is a plethora of young pitchers waiting to come up in the farm system. How much longer are we willing to give Sandy Alderson because the Mets have not gone anywhere under his regime and right now things look hopeless.

@D Agreed. And blowhard Francesa should do the same. Gary and Ron were spot-on yesterday. This is 2014.

@bleck319 More like Travis= John Stearns.....Ruben Tejeda=Mario Mendoza.........Lucas Duda .?..Scott rice/Carlos Torres=Pete falcone and Anthony young.....Chris young/ EYJ= Mike Howard and Dan Norman

you have no understanding of what it takes to build i winning team...in 2011, the Mets had NOTHING. a losing product on the field, no farm system, no money...That being said, Sandy aimed to build a team around strong starting pitching. That takes time, and without Harvey and Syndegaard, it will take at least one more full year. Why waste money on a SS when the products not ready yet? huh? you met fans are so fickle. You run Omar out of town cause she spends money on bust like Krod and Bay, but you treat Sandy like the Devil because he realizes Stephen Drew wont make a difference. I'm going to repeat this because you guys dont seem to get it, DEVELOPMENT TAKES TIME! How many years was San Francisco bad before Lincecum, Bumgarner, Posey and Belt make the majors.  How about Washington with Stausburgh, Zimmerman, Harper Storen ect, Tampa Bay with Price, Longoria, Jennings, Garza ect.

Ricky Tan
Ricky Tan

@Aurora Snow his drafts have been questionable, but even that is because they've been drafting players that are easy to sign rather than the best possible players available. All because of the money.

Other than that, though, this is pretty much what rebuilding a team with no money looks like. Takes a while.

Ricky Tan
Ricky Tan

@Aurora Snow his drafts have definitely been questionable, but you can't argue the fact that he's financially hamstrung to the point that it even affects his draft picks. They haven't drafted the best possible players, but instead the easiest players to sign.

Other than that, though, this is pretty much what rebuilding a team with no money looks like.

It isnt 0-3 it is the fact that the team isnt ready to play. Terry laughing and guffawing in the spring while all of the idiots here say "it is only spring training" is what hurts this team. They didnt get the lineup ready they didnt get the pitchers ready We still dont get a bunt down and Terry blames Tejada for being confused. Who is more confused than Terry?

Aurora Snow

What would be inaccurate about any of those opinions?

The judgements about this team are hardly uneducated and not remotely snap.  Many of us knew coming into the year that this was an aweful team, lacked fundamentals, would struggle defensively, srike out a ton and have a suspect bullpen.   This is the same old story as last year, and the year before and the year before and the year before.

How long before you take your head out of the sand and see this team for what they actually are?

I don't think everyone is as upset about being 0-3 as they are about our problems not being addressed for 4 years..

William O'Sullivan

@Jack Butler Many good points but I don't disagree with letting Reyes walk.  Jose played a grand total of 93 games last year, had 0 triples, and is starting this year on the DL again.  I loved him as a Met but his trendlines are awful.

Not that I agree with handing the keys to Tejada, but the current version of Reyes is not the answer.

joe31

@Jack Butler  Great point. Let's bring back Minaya. Wonderful, wonderful analysis.

@Jack Butler  Omar was way better.  At least Omar tried to act like he wanted to win.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@Jack Butler The answer we were looking for was Steve Phillips. Steve Phillips drafted David Wright. Most of your analysis is spot on, but anytime you can unload vets who wont resign with you for prospects its a victory. Even if d'arnaud is a complete failure that trade is still a landslide in our favor.

tullydew
tullydew

Clueless Sandy is the problem. He is incompetent and a failure.

@72tilltc  yeah but... but... "the manager makes no difference at all!", right?

Cerrone is content with an ill-prepared team that is put in a position to fail more than succeed. Terry sucks, Cerrone Sucks, the Wilpons Suck, the Roster Sucks, Wally is Cool, and thats about it

joe31

@Zach Goeringer  Agreed. NOTHING has been done. We never acquired Wheeler, Syndergaard, Montero, re-signed Wright, traded Beltran, acquired d'Arnaud. NOTHING has been done at all -- very well said.

Olerud42
Olerud42

@Zach Goeringer @Jack Butler  I disagree. Anyone can trade a vet for prospects. The trick is trading them for prospects who become productive major leaguers for your club.

Olerud42
Olerud42

@Zach Goeringer  What he means is, the team has stunk since 2009. It's now 2014. It's pretty frustrating.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@Zach GoeringerOther teams have done that and significantly more.  Do you pay any attention to any other team in the MLB?  The guys on the other side of the Triboro spent a half-billion this winter.  Those are the people the Mets are directly competing with for disposable income in the Metro area.   And the jury's still out on some of these acquisitions you're already counting as success stories.  I don't think you know what your talking about.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@Zach Goeringer Dude we haven't had a bullpen in 5 years. I get our farm system looks cool but we have holes literally all over our team and Alderson has had 4 years to solve the exact same problems every off season. Re-signing Wright and getting some stud prospects in 4 years is cute, but why don't you look around the league at the WINNING teams and see what moves they have made over the last 4 years.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@Olerud42 @Zach Goeringer @Jack Butler A vet who will not be resigning with you during a year when you will not make the playoffs is literally a useless player. What I'm saying is that even if a prospect in the trade does not pan out its still a good move being that you know the vet has a 0% chance of helping your future while the prospect is a toss up.

@Olerud42  Thank you anyone can wait for a contract to expire it takes a good gm to trade a bad contract Sandy is the worst .
