The Mets outscored the Nationals, 6-0, during the first inning this past series against the Nationals.
However, the Nationals outscored the Mets, 22-4, through the rest of the innings.
Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Bartolo Colon pitched 18 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs (4.94 ERA). Their bullpen let up 12 runs in 9.1 innings (11.86 ERA).
“We’ve got to come out of that bullpen and we’ve got to start throwing some strikes,” Terry Collins said after Thursday’s series finale. “When we’re successful, it’s because you make the other team swing the bat. Not that they can’t get a hit, but when you’re behind in the count, you’re going to get in trouble in this league.”
