The Mets are still considering whether to add depth at catcher, though they are not interested in re-signing free agent C John Buck (Puma, Jan. 5).
Buck, 33, hit .219 with 15 home runs and 62 RBI between the Mets and Pirates in 2013.
He was traded to Pittsburgh at the end of August, after which he had just 24 plate appearances in nine games.

Team insiders have said they aren’t prioritizing this roster spot at the moment, but that could change as the offseason moves into the latter stages. Even so, Sandy Alderson has said in public that he’s concerned about Travis d’Arnaud’s ability to stay healthy and on the field consistently. Buck would have made for a solid and stable backup to d’Arnaud, all while continuing to mentor both him and the young pitching staff once again this summer.

Buck does make sense for the Mets, so I assume the team’s lack of interest has to do with his asking price and not wanting to lock in a roster spot to a back-up catcher. Instead, I bet we see the Mets eventually sign one (maybe two) player to a minor-league deal, and keep the roster spot open for whatever the rest of the off-season or spring may hold…
