John Buck (BARON)

Mets open to adding catching depth, uninterested in John Buck

The Mets are still considering whether to add depth at catcher, though they are not interested in re-signing free agent C John Buck (Puma, Jan. 5).

Buck, 33, hit .219 with 15 home runs and 62 RBI between the Mets and Pirates in 2013.

He was traded to Pittsburgh at the end of August, after which he had just 24 plate appearances in nine games.

Team insiders have said they aren’t prioritizing this roster spot at the moment, but that could change as the offseason moves into the latter stages. Even so, Sandy Alderson has said in public that he’s concerned about Travis d’Arnaud’s ability to stay healthy and on the field consistently. Buck would have made for a solid and stable backup to d’Arnaud, all while continuing to mentor both him and the young pitching staff once again this summer.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

Buck does make sense for the Mets, so I assume the team’s lack of interest has to do with his asking price and not wanting to lock in a roster spot to a back-up catcher. Instead, I bet we see the Mets eventually sign one (maybe two) player to a minor-league deal, and keep the roster spot open for whatever the rest of the off-season or spring may hold…

After April John Buck was an automatic out for most of the season. Maybe we can lure Choo Choo Coleman out of retirement. I have no problem with a veteran backstop--preferably a good glove man and handler of pitchers--to work with Travis during the year.

Yes, his ability to get a hit once every ten times at bat and his questionable abilities behind the plate make their lack of interest a real head scratcher.

John Buck was a terrible receiver.  Why would you want to bring him back?

Why can't Metsblog at least post the list of FA catcher, and/or the top one or two guys within the organization?  Is that too much homework for this guy Baron?

Recker and Centeno are more than enough to back up D'Arnaud. If the Mets don't get at least .260 and 15 homers put of him, they're in trouble anyway. This team's success will be determined by whether they can get Drew at shortstop, whether Chris Young can bounce back to his DBack days and how fast the pitching develops.

the mets shoulda signed arencibia or  aj pierzynski, both got 1 yr deals

This team still desperately needs Drew, a #4 bat in the outfield, and a reliever.  If they have these, they can compete.  If they have the team they do now, they will finish with the same record as 2013 +/- 2 games.  Is Sandy happy with the current team?

I have a challenge for Metsblog:

Write something original.  Anything.  Just.. just anything at all.  Something that comes out of your own brain, no external sources, no quotes from other blogs or twitter accounts.  Original.  Something you can call your own and be proud of.

Here is a hint, if you can't figure out how to write original stuff, you're site is going to die.  At this point I don't even know why I look at the site anymore.  I don't even read anything.  I look at the title of something, maybe the first, I dunno, 5 words, realize it isn't worth looking at, then leave.  Which you register as a 'hit'?  I guess?  Success for you?  Good job, pat on the back?  Write something worth reading or just take the site down and move on with your lives.  Practically everyone here feels this way, I promise you.

The problem with re-signing Buck is Collins will play him a majority of the time at the expense of D Arnaud's playing time.  Thus retarding his growth even further.  Collins can not be trusted and Alderson is making the wise decision by not resigning him.

Ramon Castro did a good job last year with the Long Island Ducks.

Between D Arnaud's injury history and the fact that the Mets may have a very young (MLB green) pitching staff by June, it would be wise to have a wiley veteran C available behind the dish.  Wiley vet or not I'm interested in seeing Centeno

"Even s0" ROFL I get that the zero is next to the O but auto-correct should at least handle that one. LOL this guy needs an editor.

Get a catcher because d'arneau will end up the backup.

How can you say Ike is the best option. Do we have to wait till July for him to hit for the third year in a row?

The best option is blue chip infield prospect 22 year old RBI machine Wilmer Flores. If he gets put in one position EVERYDAY, watch him rake. Duda to Minors, release Ike, then sign Drew. Excellent infield. Send Tejada back home to his ranch.

He'll def cost too much. I'd like to give Centino a try as an in-house option as back-up catcher. Kid's gotta cannon for an arm

I would take him as a backup to d'Arnaud if the price were low enough.

haha..awesome.....maybe stick to updates that pertain to players the mets ARE interested in...

breaking news.. mets were not interested in signing robinson cano.....who the eff cares about this stuff?

I bet they don't want to sign Buck because they feel he should have an opportunity to start everyday somewhere, not catch once a week.

Mets, in order:
d'Arnaud

@Mike Dell Italia Arencibia sucks. If you gave Recker a full season of plate appearances, he'd put up similar or better numbers than JPA and that's not saying much. Pierzynski wouldn't make any sense for the Mets when they want to develop d'Arnaud into the starter long term. He's getting $8.5m from Boston and that wouldn't have made any sense for the Mets.

@Derpy I check out this site because I know if there is something new going on with the Mets, I'll find it here.  I'm  not at all concerned with whether or not its a "Metsblog exclusive".   Isn't that really the point?   Its baseball we are talking about here.   Lets not get carried away.  No one's life is at stake after all.

@Derpy I gave up on this site. I still stop by occasionally to see if they have anything worth my time, but they never do, and I promptly leave. Metsmerizedonline has everything this site has article-wise and way, way more.

Minor point, but their articles are also always proofread and don't contain typos in almost every post (like this one "s0"), and they have the old comment system which doesn't suck like this one.

The only author on this site who I have seen post anything worth my time reading is Maggie. Other than that it is just a beat-reporter reporting circle-jerk between Baron and Cerrone. It wasn't always that way, but it is now.

Mets Minors has more interesting content than Metsblog lately. Its really a shame. I used to love this site.

Max Denby

Agree. They have become a news site. They should add some real content and inform the conversation about the team we love. They are currently not doing that.

@tommets You can always tell when Baron is on duty.  It's gotten to the point, now, that I think he does it on purpose just to drive people crazy.  I mean, no one is that incompetent, right?

@zootv i think the mets have a potential for a nice bench, satin, eric young jr, if they sign drew, tejeda, maybe a duda or a flores

@chasesimms It's just like the BOIKOTT crowd around here clicking away every day. Blows my mind. Nobody is holding a gun to their heads to come here. Yet, they do,all the while just whining.

I come here, check the headlines and sometimes the comments, then leave. People take this stuff WAY too seriously.

The more playing time Satin got he was exposed.  I think erroneously a lot of Mets fans think he batted over .300 last year - he ended up at .279 and on a downward track.  No power either, the Mets can and should do better.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Mike Dell Italia @zootv satin is solid right hander hitter off the bench, who can play multiple positions, and ey has tremedous speed and is a great defender, who play all outfield positions and second base, i think ur asking for too much out of your bench, eric young jr is a great 4th outfilelder and satin can be a great pinch hitter.
