Mets officially announce signing of RHP Bartolo Colon

The Mets announced they have signed RHP Bartolo Colon to a two-year contract.

Colon, 40, was 18-6 with a 2.65 ERA in 30 starts during 190 innings for the A’s last season.

He has started 29, 24 and 30 games during each of the last three seasons. He has a 3.94 ERA in 405 starts in his career.

Over the last three years (2011-2013), Colon has posted the 10th-lowest ERA (3.32) in the AL and has thrown over 500 innings (507).

Is Colon supposed to make me feel confident about the 2014 season? If it is, it's not working :{

I'd be extremely dissatisfied with Tejada being starting shortstop and a platoon of Duda/Satin 1B Platoon. You already have a below average hitting outfield in the name of hitting more home runs. and now two of the four infield positions will be hitting below average. on top of that Tejadas defense at SS has fallen off, and Duda has a extremely low RISP average. Call me crazy ,but I would rather have Turner re-signed and put as the everyday SS, he hit .280 and always hits the ball hard. Even Flores is deserving of a chance at 1B, he is having an extremely successful winter

Too much money on a 40 yr old.. He better put the numbers he did last yr

A big part of any trading strategy is PR. Pronouncements about Duda and Satin sharing first base might be smoke and mirrors, and can be used as bargaining chips by Alderson. There's no reason why Flores can't wind up as a regular first-base candidate.

Here's something to chew on. If you think we contend in 2014 but win in 2015 with the return of Harvey, the establishment of Montero and/or Snydergaard, and the addition of some final puzzle pieces likeClendennon in 69 and Carter in 85, who might those puzzle pieces be? Check out the 2015 MLB Free Agent list here: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/2015-mlb-free-agents.html

Unfortunately, it's a pitching-rich class deep in top shelf Starting Pitching but thin on position players. Given our rotation should be solidified by then and our anticipated need will be for SS, RF, and RP, what's the next step? Do we throw money at JJ Hardy and Brett Gardner? I certainly hope Aderson and crew are planning ahead.

Slow news day I guess. There must be something new regarding Ike Davis that we could talk about for the 100th time...

If Colon was a smaller guy, would he be referred to as a semi-colon?

I gotta believe the plan is to keep Bartolo Colon healthy until Noah Syndergaard and/or Montero are called up and moving him at the deadline for a SS while he is signed to a reasonable contract for a team that is a SP away from a trip to the WS.  The Red Sox traded Iglesias for Peavy at the deadline last season.  Peavy had a year and half left on his contract at the time.   We could then go into 2015 with a rotation of

SP1- Matt Harvey-R

SP2- Jon Niese-L

SP3- Dillon Gee-R

SP4- Zack Wheeler-R

SP5-Noah Syndergaard-R

LR/SP6-Jeremy Hefner-R

and have Wright, SS via Colon, Murphy, Duda, Granderson, Lagares and package Montero, Flores, Checinni, Mejia for a RF and CL.  2015 should be really exciting if our pitching can stay healthy.  I wouldn't be totally shocked if we stay in contention pretty late in the season in 2014

So we waited 3 years for Young, Granderson and Colon???? Serious?

Oh, boy. Another mediocre signing.

Forget drew for what he wants for how long I don't think is worth it we might as well have kept Reyes. At this point the mets should try to get a young SS with decent potential like Owens and see how that goes.

Daniel/Max he got less money than Scott Kazmir and Kazmir didn't pitch in 2012 and posted his first positive WAR since 2009 last year. This was actually a good contract, no matter how much you want to bash the Mets.

I might be the only mets fan in the world that actually thinks like this but I hope the mets don't trade Ike Davis because he has shown he can hit 30+ homers and play solid defense. He has shown that he can hit in clutch situations too. I really do not want to see Duda start 1B opening day. I have nothing against him except that Davis has a much higher ceiling than him. Duda seems to only hits solo homers and doesn't do much to excite me. I want Duda to succeed but I really think the Mets should trade Duda and not Ike. I'll give Ike a few months to turn it around but if he doesn't then it'll be the right move to move on. He was really starting to turn it around when he came back from the minors but unfortunately the injury got in the way. I just don't want to see the mets trade him and he goes and hits 35+ homers on another team like Milwaukee.

@hankypanky

On the flip side it's hard to see how they can bring Ike or Tejada back in the spring after basically trashing them all winter.

@mystere24 im sure they are...thats just the way Baseball is now...its considered conventional wisdom to lock up your "face of the franchise" earlier and earlier, even if you're considered a small market team. Look at Tampa Bay, their the smallest of small market teams and Longoria still got a monster deal, same with Cincy and Votto and the Brewers and Braun. Even when we werent spending, we still got a deal done for David Wright. Because of this, fewer and fewer impact bats hit the market each year...

That being said, the Mets needs will prob be filled though trade

@mystere24 Who said they have to be FAs? Everything the mets dont need, they have an abundance of.

Reports are Davis doesn't want to go to The brewers as he keeps kosher and doesn't want to play for a team with a sausage race (Cerrone)

@bcleveland Many see EYJ a 4th outfielder but unless a trade is made Lagares could be the 4th platooning with Chris Young in center. Lineup would look like this.

EYJ LF.

Murphy 2B.

Wright 3B

Granderson RF.

CYoung/ Lagares/CF.

Davis/Duda 1B.

TDA C.

Tejada SS.

If he gets hit hard will Keith refer to it as a Colon-oscopy?

@dexxit's important to keep your Colon healthy.  Hah - I just thought of that after all this time.

getalife

@dexxwe may still get a new SS this winter in a trade.  Next winter we can spend a little money again on a RF and/or closer without having to trade those guys.  No matter what, it's exciting to see SOMETHING happening.  Can't wait for Harvey to come back!  I am worried though that it's a matter of time before Wheeler goes down, too.

getalife

@dexxOh, so do you think they won't push him?  Like 100 pitches per start...  could be.

@dexxthe plan is to keep him healthy...?  I would hope so.

Stop whining before this sandy biggest signing was frank frank

getalife

@MMIAAlooks like it for this year.  Sandy has said he doesn't want too many big contracts at the same time.  I would expect another big signing next winter and a trade or two still this winter and that's it.  That's OK.  He's trying to build a team that can sustain success.  Also, we do need to start saving $ for Harvey!

dexx

@Justin Corr Why?  Is it because Reyes missed 70 games last season & Drew played 130?  Is it because Reyes has 4/$82mil left on his contract & Drew is asking for 3/$36?  Is it because that Drew is a SS that you can win a World Series with & Reyes has finished in last place in his division for 3 different teams, 3 years in a row?  Drew is the better SS at this point in time for half the price.

Justin Corr
Justin Corr

I see duda as a bench player on this team. Between the two IMO hands down Ike at first because if he can put it all together offensively he's a bat the mets desperately need if they have hopes of contention not to mention a potential 30+ hr hitter that can hit the Shea bridge every now and then for 3.5 mil is worth at least one more year. If he does get traded I would hope it paves the road for Flores at 1st base, not duda. Flores is killing it in the minors and winter league so it would be good if he can get an every day position on the roster to see if he can take a mother step forward on the major league level

niesesnose

I really can't see Ike in the organization come Spring Training. I can see Tejada battling out for the backup infielder spot though, assuming they get a SS, which seems pretty likely

@niesesnoseKosher hotdogs can be found anywhere. Davis's real problem is Valley Fever, which is hard to treat.

@niesesnoseBut Braun is Jewish, too.  They must have Hebrew National hotdogs somewhere.

Trust me, there is 0 chance Lagares isn't starting in CF come opening day. He' a far superior player to Young

I like the idea of Duda/Satin in the 2 hole and Murphy hitting 5th or 6th in the line up.  Murph's aggressive approach is better served lower in the line up, where he'll hopefully have more RBI chances.

@dexx @Justin Corr Wow someone with some logic. I never understood the complete and utter love affair with Reyes.

kefhrny17

Duda is a bench player on every team except the Mets... He's terrible defensively, terrible offensively and has pop but at the wrong time usually.

@niesesnose My problem with any talk about Flores is the fact that last year every single person in major league baseball claimed that second base was the only position he was even almost useful at.  Everyone said the guy was too slow to play the outfield and then everyone said the guy has hands of stone.  He's a big athletic young guy who grew up playing baseball the perception this guy can't play the field I think is a total load of bull.

Skyking

@bcleveland @Skyking EY will not start over Lagares CY will start over Lagares. EY will be penciled in lf being the only lead off solution with Murphy at 2b. Love Lagares's defense but he still hasn't proved he can hit to be an everyday player. Unless a trade is made I see a C.Young/Lagares platoon in cf. Something to keep in mind. If this team ever  lands an outfield bat, Lagares will not be starting at all.

@dexx@MMIAA@Justin Corr Stephen  Drew is not exactly Cal Ripken, 79 and 86 in  two years prior to last which he played 124 games (30 more than Reyes) and Reyes is def easily a better baseball player, Drew is not coming here for 3/36, he'll take a 1 or 2 yr deal and go back to Boston, we'd have to give a Granderson like deal for him and another draft pick

dexx
dexx

@MMIAA@dexx@Justin Corr Makes no sense.  He won't play half the games scheduled in those 4 years and his defense is declining sharply. He had 15 SBs last season in 90 games.  Daniel Murphy has 23 SBs last season.
