Mets may ignore innings limit for deGrom if in a pennant race

The Mets have set a 180-185 innings pitched limit this season for rookie RHP Jacob deGrom.

However, they are open to extending him deeper in to the season if they end up in a serious bid for a playoff spot, Sandy Alderson said on SNY during Friday’s game.

That said, he added, the decision would largely depend on how deGrom is performing and feeling at the time.

“The nice thing is that we do have some other guys we can plug in there,” he added.

DeGrom was named co-National League Player of the Week the final week of July, during which he was 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA.

He is 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 14 starts for the Mets this season, while striking out 83 batters in 87 innings.

To Sandy's credit, after he gave the no-answer he asked Mex and Gary, "how was that fir hedging?"

Jacob is already 26 years old, three months younger than Clayton Kershaw.  Less need to worry about innings than younger arms.

guy must have special people to craft his language so he sounds like a politician or some hairsplitting lawyer.

Sandy didn't actually say that. He implied that they would use other pitchers. They are not going to ignore his inning limit.

In other news, I would consider dating Kate Upton if she calls me tomorrow.

I would love for the Mets to earn a playoff spot this season since nobody was expecting the recent surge in wins. Lets Go Mets!

When the giants win this series u can take the term playoff race and throw it out the window.

I think he meant they'd let him play shortstop when he hits his innings limit.

Maybe they should worry more about competing against the WC leading Giants. Pathetic effort so far

This is not how I interpreted what Sandy said.

How does selling team make them better?

Why would you want to sign a player to something like $50mil for 5 years and he will start in the MINORS and possibly be called up in September and then compete in spring training. That is what scouts say about him as far as his path goes. No thank you...

If they sweep or get sweeped still doesn't dictate if there is a playoff race. It's a marathon not a sprint. If you don't believe in your team why bother following them to the point beyond watching the games.

Cut young cut Abreu. Just by playing those guys the Mets are making a statement that winning is less important than catering to vet players.
