Mets looking to trade non-core prospects from the 40-man roster

The Mets are looking to trade non-core prospects from the 40-man roster in order to clear spots, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Rubin says among those who are available are Gonzalez Germen, Darin Gorski, Reese Havens, Juan Lagares, Cesar Puello, Elvin Ramirez, and Hansel Robles.

Updated: March 27, 9:10 am: The D’Backs and Blue Jays, among other teams, asked about Gorski and other Single-A pitchers in the system as the Mets and were discussing outfielders and focusing on acquiring big-league talent. Scouts for other teams really like Sandy Alderson’s young pitching. I’ve heard them say it’s unlikely a deal could be built around these players for big-time talent, but  on their own the Mets young pitchers are certainly capable of equalling another team’s late-20s, no-room-for-him-on-the-roster type outfielder or starting-pitcher-now-reliever type, i.e., the sort of guy you’ll find on the A’s and Mariners right now. I don’t know that the Mets are eager to trade a young pitcher, but I do think they’ll do it if a deal is available and can help the big-league roster (even if on the edges).

The 40-man roster currently stands at 39, but the Mets need to add Omar Quintanilla, Marlon Byrd, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchison and Aaron Laffey before Opening Day.

Rubin believes several of the players the Mets are willing to deal – including Havens – would likely clear waivers, if the Mets are unable to trade them and they’re designated for assignment.

Meanwhile, Andy Martino of the Daily News says the Blue Jays have been “poking around” about Havens.

It’s amazing how far Havens’ stock has fallen. Second base has basically been there for the taking for a number of seasons now, but he has not been able to keep himself on the field and stay on track to takeover the position. He has a ton of talent, but his body simply has not cooperated with him – he’s suffered through back problems, oblique injuries and a whole laundry list of problems since he was drafted in 2008. Now, here he is at a crossroads in his career, looking at the possibility of being cut or traded away….it’s just a shame…
