Ike Davis and Lucas Duda

Dec. 8: Latest Ike Davis, Lucas Duda trade rumors…

The Mets intend to find a trade partner for either 1B Ike Davis or 1B Lucas Duda during the Winter Meetings this week (Carig, Dec. 8).

“I won’t tell you what our intentions are, but hopefully it’ll resolve itself shortly,” Sandy Alderson said Sunday about his first base situation.

7:00 pm: The Mets could trade Davis (Martino), as they seem more invested in Duda’s growth (Lennon).

2:33 pm: The Mets preference is to move Davis (Martino).

Michael Baron, Contributor

The Mets have seemingly received quite a bit of interest Duda and Davis, so it’s possible they could simply move the guy who brings the largest return. There’s no question something has to give between them, now that it’s certain Duda can’t really thrive at a different position. The Rays seem to be an ideal match on paper, since they are reportedly looking for a first baseman. I wonder if one of these guys could be moved for someone like OF Matt Joyce or SS Yunel Escobar?

Nov. 26: According to major league sources, the Rays like Davis, as well as Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland (Martino).

Nov. 26: The Pirates are looking to acquire a left-handed-hitting first baseman to complement 1B Gaby Sanchez (Olney).

Nov. 17: The Rays will consider swapping Davis for Joyce (Topkin).

Nov. 13: The Astros, Orioles, Rays, Brewers and Rockies checked in with the Mets about Davis (Heyman) (Rubin).

If Lucas and Satin end up the full time first baseman. expect alot of pressure that Ike had to come towards Lucas if he does not produce. I also feel that Lucas by July will be in the minors and the Mets will be looking towards another first baseman. I do not think Lucas will be too productive as we need him to be.

If Balt looking for 2nd and likes Davis... We can avoid Joyce... I see drawbacks just power.. What are his HR splits? What else does he offer?

Who is Balt willing to part with that has value and impact?

Joyce, no way!

Tampa, pen or Escobar, in Davis trade, but they are probably immersed with Seattle for Price deal.

What chips would Seattle have for Price?

If Davis improves outside Citi, prefer AL and even better in AL East to torture the Bronx!

dexx There isn't a love affair with Ike and there is no disdain for Duda. (If there is any disdain, it is illustrated by calling Davis "poor little Ikey boy". What's with that?)  It is a matter of overall quality as a player. Davis has shown long periods of brilliance, conterbalanced by two equally long and agonizing periods of drought. Look at his 2011 before the collision with Wright, his 2nd half in 2012, and after he returned from the minors last year. Duda has only had one such stretch, in the 2nd half of 2011. Since then he has been decidedly mediocre. And Ike is the far better fielder.

I am praying that Sandy is playing up his love for Duda to elevate his trade value, and that he finds a way to retain Davis. IMHO, the probability of getting a stellar season from Ike is far higher than getting a good season from Duda. I hope that Alderson pushes a trade of Duda for Yunel Escobar, and adds prospects to get the Rays to give up Jeremy Hellickson too.

the Rays have Yunel Escobar, Hak-Ju lee and Tim Beckham. i'd take any one of them over Tejada next year. and since the Rays have 3 of them they should want to deal.

What is going on with the love affair of Ike Davis and why is there such disdain for Duda?  Is is because he poses a threat to poor little Ikey Boy?  This is amazing that people could really defend playing Davis over Duda at 1B in 2014.  Never underestimate the power of stupidity I guess.

Am i the only one that prefers Ike over duda.. duda will never amount to anything ike at least has the potential to get back to a 30 hr guy

Any team that looks at Davis vs Duda and would be more invested in Duda deserves to be in the position the Mets are in.  Davis isn't great, but his ceiling is way higher than Duda's.  Duda is the Mackey Sasser of swinging.

And yet, Alderson is cautioning against acquiring a SS.  What are we dumping Davis for then?

Francesco Monastra
Francesco Monastra

Murphy Montero and Vaughn to Dodgers for Matt Kemp (eat 30m) and Dee Gordan

Tejada/Gordan compete at SS, if Gordan wins you put Flores at 2B, if Tejada wins, you put either EY or Gordan at 2B

Young Jr/Gordan Tejada/Flores Granderson Wright Kemp Davis Young D Arnaud

maybe Young D Arnaud slide into 2

i love the potential of that lineup, what do u think of this

They seem more invested in Duda's growth?  WTF does that mean?!  Davis is a former first round pick - we're more invested in some late-round crapshoot who has the baseball instincts of a surfboard?

Granderson deal: 13 mil first year, 16 mil for years 2 and 3 and 15 mil for final year

(Controversial comment time) I prefer Ike Davis over Lucas Duda. Which of the two showed some light at the end of a very dark 2012 first half offensively? When looking to Duda and Davis I think it is VERY important to look back two years like some of the writers on this site have done similarly for Curtis Granderson. How fair would it be to look back to last year for Granderson and say, "Oh, no no, we can't sign him, he only had 12 homeruns!" Thinking about this logically we have to throw away both Davis and Duda's first halves as they both were either horrible or injured. Right after the all-star break we see the resurgence of Davis and he had some patience to his swing as well. Duda, well we just saw a dude(a) swing at a couple lucky pitches for homers.

I understand that the Mets org. agrees with this and that is why they'd prefer to ship Davis-he has more ability to do better here- as he does somewhere else(trade value) but as for who he could be, if they're gonna keep one and moving either is an option, move Duda because when Ike goes on to his 47 homeruns next season he will go down as just another great Met that left on sour terms when he could have done more.

It's about time we ditch our two sub-par candidates at the first base position.

I think Keith would drive in more runs and play a better 1st base at this point than Duda...are the mets front office just blind? Ike was so horrendous last year, yet teams are more interested in him than Duda...that alone should tell you something....at least Ike has potential....in 2010 he was solid, 2011 he was playing very well before the injury, and 2012 , as horrible as he was, he finished up with 30 homers. You even hear Darling, Cohen, and Eddie C all say that they think Ike is the better player. I am all for upgrading 1st base and bringing a fresh face in here, but if you are picking between those two...for the love of god, do not pick Duda.

Can anyone provide some info on Michael Young, besides stats last year i mean, would he be a beneficial addition to the Mets now at 1B? Can he still hit and can he stay healthy at 1B?

30yrmetfan

I can't imagine that the 2 mil they're save this yr would be worth the risk of playing duda everyday he's awful! Ike has far more upside of roll the dice w/him once more

I would love Kemp if he would consider training at 1st base. With his ankle situation it would be one way to lessen his re-injuring it. His bat sure would work at 1st!

nyijkm

if the Mets trade for Kemp I may eat a human foot.  Does an OF of Grandy, Kemp, Young/Lagares/EYJ make the Mets instant contenders, if Kemp shows he is healthy all spring training?

i certainly wonder if Tampa has Joyce why aren't they using him as their first baseman internally. if they do not believe in him that makes me question him as well.   I would be on board for Kendres Morales?

gothamsane

Tejada has no track record, he is 23, baseball site says he matches up at 23 w C Irzurus sp. at same age. Really? Let's get Escobar, not Joyce! Any day...

dexx

@Nico Centanni He might have the potential to get to 30 again, but he can't do it for the Mets.  He will always get a steady diet of pitches on the outside part of the plate because he has no power the other way.  He might be effective again but not for us.  He can't hit a home, and last time I checked, we play 81 games a season there.

dexx
dexx

@shaun Ha.  You obviously do not watch baseball, if you think anyone has a worse swing than Ike Davis does.  I thought he was hula hooping this year, and as it turns out, he was in the batters box when he was doing it.

gothamsane

No PEDs!!!

Not giving up Murphy's total bases for OBP.

Gardner streaky.

No fire sale for Gardner

No Murphy in the Bronx! Unless we get great deal...

The man has so many intangibles.. Great production at 2nd..

Murphy and Eric Young ... for Gardner, prospect and Ichiro?

Maybe not, too much salary, we still need back rotation and Davis not enough for Escobar ...

Then sign Boone Logan...

Logan $4M

Ichiro $6M

Gardner $

Escobar $5M

Minus:

Davis $4M

Murphy $ 7M

E Young $

What do we need to enhance Davis for Escobar without a VG pitching prospect?

@metsfan99 Flores isn't a 2B, and Ike isn't a MLB player.  You made us worse at 2 positions, and arguably 3 with Stubbs in the lineup everyday.  EY2 is better

mattisadrunk

@metsfan99 Why would you sign Colon? He is going to cost at least 10 million dollars a year,  is gonna be 41 in 2014, and weighs almost 300lb. At what point in April or May does he tear every ligament in his knee slowly jogging to 1B on a force out?

@dave27a He sucks.  He can't hit at home, and he can't hit LHP.  At best.  He is a platoon player for away games.  Stop with the Davis nonsense.  He hasn't been worth a damn since April 2011

@nothisispatrick Agree - and with our luck you know that will happen. Plus now that the Mets have improved defensively in the outfield, why would they want to weaken themselves in the infield by playing Duda (and Satin for that matter).

Have to let Flores play full season before we find a full time First Baseman?

jacobsoshnick

@nymets83 amen, completely agree.

i would try to trade murph and duda for a ss. have flores and EYJ play it out for 2nd, and sign halladay/colon. maybe a bullpen guy.

then next year when harvey is back, synder is up, chris young off the books we can reevaluate and put more money in to this team when ownership sees improvement and more people in the seats this year.

I don't have a problem trading murph, like you said...but idk about Flores over there...I'm sick of the mets having all these one dimensional players on the field....you need guys who can hit and field well...or at the least not hurt you defensively ....I like murph as well but want more complete players..the mets have too many guys who have so many deficiencies whether it be they need a defensive replacement, they can't hit lefties, they can't run the bases etc....ultimately better players need to be brought in across the board
