The Mets have hired Will Carafello to be the team’s Director of Social Media, the team announced Monday.
He had been the Director of Marketing for the New Jersey Devils where he helped create “Mission Control,” “the first digital command center within the sports and entertainment industry.”
According to the team, Carafello has spent over a decade in the sports and entertainment industry, including marketing roles with the Meadowlands Sports Complex, Madison Square Garden, and the Harlem Globetrotters.

The Mets already have one of the most passionate online fan bases, so I am very interested to see if Will tries to re-create Mission Control for the Mets. My advice to the team, when asked, was that they should hire someone who is in the business of pulling together and rallying their online community as opposed to just selling to it. Mission Control in New Jersey is essentially a small group of volunteer fan advocates that push out Devils content to Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc., all from a centralized command center at their arena. This has the Verizon Studios written all over it, by the way. There is a faction of new Mets fans that I think will eat this up. There is another group that will only tolerate this only if the team wins, otherwise they may find it obnoxious and gimmicky. How Will navigates this will be fun to watch… I guess the real question is: How does he reign in butt dialing?
