Mets have not had recent trade talks about Daniel Murphy

The Mets have not had any recent trade talks about 2B Daniel Murphy, assistant GM John Ricco told reporter Tim Rohan (NY Times, July 3).

“He is one of the more valuable guys we have,” said Ricco. “He’s settled in as one of the best second basemen in the game, certainly offensively, and is a leader on our team.”

Murphy, 29, is on pace to finish the season batting around .300 with a .35o OBP, 10-15 HR, 30-35 doubles, 65 RBI and 100 runs scored.

He is expected to earn around $9 million in 2015, after which he can become a free agent.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, based on his position, age and stats, Murphy is likely due a four- or five-year contract extension worth around $12 million per season (MLBTR, June 26).

Multiple reports indicated the Mets were open to trading Murphy this past off season, but the asking price was ‘substantial,’ according to people who checked in on him (Rubin, Dec. 11).

For instance, in December, the Mets talked to Houston about a deal involving Murphy, but it never panned out, according to a leaked document used for internal communication by Houston’s front office (Deadspin, June 30). Similarly, the Orioles had interest (Sherman, Dec. 9), but the Mets asked for top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy, among other players, which Baltimore quickly turned down (MLB Network Radio, Dec. 11).

It was recently reported that the Blue Jays and Giants, among others teams, continue to have interest in Murphy, according to columnist Andy Martino (Daily News, June 23).

Mets should keep Murphy.  He has been a great soldier and the Mets should pay him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think Murphy has maxed out his potential. On a better team, he will be a consistent .300 + hitter with some production. Mets should keep him, if they plan on trying to get better (that's the big?)

Seriously, he needs to be traded. Ownership won't want to pay him and we suck. We suck with him, we'll suck without him. Might as well get something of value for him.

His RBI total is absolutely pathetic.

12Mil a year? Trade him now before he goes for nothing.

Everybody knows that the Mets can't afford (or do not want to pay) Murphy next year. I won't be surprised to see Murph in a Giants or Yanks uniform by the end of the trade deadline.

Matt Reynolds is playing 2nd every day now in Las Vegas.  No power whatsoever, but he hits for a high average there.  I'm pretty sure we'll see him at 2nd or SS (with Tejada moving to 2nd) after Murph is traded.  Flores is playing SS regularly now, so maybe they'll finally give up on Tejada and give Wilmer an extended look during the second half.

Well Darvish got scratched tonight so we'll be seeing him tomorrow...

They could have an allstar line and they would lose 3 out of every 4th game

It went from the Mets will not trade Murphy to they have not had trade talks, what's next?

People here still don't get it. The sad reality is that the one constant is that payroll is constantly going down. The ONLY reason we would trade murphy is because the Mets have no intention of signing him to 45-50MM 4 year deal. Furthermore, I doubt we are going to take on any new hitters that require double digit salaries.

We are doomed until Freddie sells out.

As of right now Murphy is our lone offensive threat. Even Keith has said that Murph is the best hitter on the squad. Why trade our best batter? For what? Move him to first next year and give Flores a legitimate shot at 2B.

murphy.wright, juan, granderson, tda only certains in the lineup for next year...on the fence about duda but i dont think so because on a contending team he is a 6-7 hitter and with his glove its just not worth it

The biggest mistake was jumping all over CY early in the offseason. Alderson said he did that because he could play CF if lagares was bad. Funny thing is CY is now a 200 hitter. The mets have Kirk that cpuod of done the same thing for way cheaper.

Murphy will be traded. If not this trading deadline it will then happen in the off season. The Mets don't have the cash to commit to Murphy specially when having other options at 2nd base ready to take over. Yes, Murphy has been great and is the most consistent hitter we have, but, for the right return you trade him sooner rather than later. Teams will call. He is one of the best pure hitters available in the trading market.

No I agree, but Drew wanted way too much $$. He never would of helped us....But for all those who thought he'd help us, was never gonna happen.....

Good, Murphy has turned into one of my favorites, he better not go anywhere without us getting more in return.

I don't want to see us trade for some Dominican prospect we'll never hear of after the day the trade is made

If most of your abs occur with no one on base, usually due to either not being in an RBI spot in the lineup or the lack of hitting ahead of him, you can't drive in many runs. On another note, mike trout doesn't strike out enough batters to make him worth the extension.

@ifti99  If we bumped our payroll to $150 million next year, I wouldn't spend it on signing Murphy to that kind of deal.

@Kenneth Meltsner We already have a first basemen in Duda. How about doing something (aka getting rid of) with Tejada? and give him a chance to play SS... where he was SHOULD be playing right now everyday for the mets.

@mi

Grandy - Corner OF

Murph -  2nd base

Wright - 3rd base

Duda - 1st base

Lagares - CF

TDA - Catcher

we need a SS and another Corner OF and i think we can be good.

@mi  Duda has an .800 OPS and makes almost no money (relatively).  If he's your #7 hitter, you have the best lineup in baseball.

@cyjabeli Where are all the people who were clamoring for SA to sign either Drew or Peralta?

04doctored14
04doctored14

@pcubed @Kenneth Meltsner Duda rarely hits with runners on base.  His fielding is suspect and his baseball instincts are terrible (ie baserunning).  Murphy could be moved to 1B if D. Herrara or Reynolds ready to take over 2B.

Alexei Ramirez at ss, Nick Markakis or Mike Morse in the outfield.

@zoddie hahah , let me know when he gets a clutch hit or does something when were not 11 games under

I wasn't saying anything negative about Dominicans. I was saying that the majority of the prospects we acquire in trades for whatever reason are from Central America. This is because they think if they can hit there they can hit here. That's only the case with a few of them.

@dminches No one wanted Drew they just dont want Tejada you stupid MORON!

Financially they Mets could only afford one big contract and they chose Grandy over Peralta.

Well peralta is ok, Drew is clearly having a problem with MLB pitching since he's come back

You don't think maybe Peralta chose St. Louis over the Mets.

@BringBackDaveTelghe No MLB team offered Drew a contract, he'll be a free agent again after this season. Will any team sign him?

zoddie

@Ed Yano  The Mets weren't offering him $53m.  Peralta, like almost every other baseball player, chose the most money.
