Ralph Kiner 1 (BARON)

Mets fans want left field corner renamed ‘Kiner’s Korner’

A group of Mets fans want the Mets to rename sections 132-134 in Citi Field, tucked around the left field foul pole, to be renamed “Kiner’s Korner” in honor of the late broadcaster Ralph Kiner.

The group rallied around Ed Solomon and his Twitter account, @MetKinersKorner, to show that over 5,000 fans support the cause. The Mets have already announced that they will wear a patch honoring Kiner, have graphics on the field – similar to the one at Tradition Field – and hang a banner on the left field wall. The team has also re-named the broadcast booth after the longtime broadcaster. But Solomon said that the seating area would be a great honor on top of all that.

“He deserves a tribute in perpetuity, out in the open,” Solomon said.

Kiner broadcasted Mets games from their inagural year in 1962 through the 2013 season. This will be the first year the Mets are in existence that Kiner will not call one of their games.

“He taught so many the game we care for, for so long, but also in a very unique way,” Solomon said. “You probably have heard stories of kids falling asleep with transistor radios under their pillows. Kiner, Bob Murphy, and Lindsey Nelson all played huge roles during that era, but Kiner transcended generations. While Nelson left the team and Murphy was relegated to radio, Kiner stayed on television, and kids my age had televisions with sleep timers in their rooms. So, they fell asleep to his voice too.

“In addition to being a voice of summer, he was the ‘voice of bedtime; for decades, a rare circumstance, indeed. I argue that it’s plausible that Ralph put more kids to sleep with smiles on their faces than any other Mets figure.”

Kiner passed away in February at the age of 91.

The booth has long been named for Ralph -- this is not a new addition by any means ...

Um, the television booth at Citifield is named after Ralph

I agree with the other Mets fans.....Rename Left Field = Kiner's Korner. Personally, I will miss Ralph this season.

I am sure I am going to get beat up for saying this, and don't get me wrong, I love Ralph Kiner and understand what he means to the fans, but renaming a couple of sections in LF "Kiner's Korner" sounds a little cheesy to me. I think a much classier way to commemorate his service to the Mets would be to add a Kiner emblem on the LF wall next to the Shea emblem and all the retired numbers. Just my humble opinion.

Some of you commenting are either too young or too stupid to understand how much Kiner meant to most of us.  He was the voice of the Mets, and had the most amazing stories about the game and its players.  He's truly missed.

This is so easy to do that Mets management will definitely mess this up ... Yup ... They will mess this up ..

Why do we even need a petition for this? Oh that's right it's the Mets

This is an AWESOME idea. But Mets management being Mets management, they'll turn it into 11 weeks of discussion, then give some lame answer why it can't be done.

I hope I'm wrong, because this one is just spot-on.

I was able to meet him many times. He was a great guy not only on the field but off of it as well. I hope they do something to remember him.

KIner definitely deserves this.  And while they're at it, why not have the WIlpon's give his family a 1% share of the team.  Kiner has earned that - probably means more to the Mets than anyone else.

Obviously.... since this is the right thing to do.... it will not be done.... this organization is a disgrace.... they are clueless.... there is no loyalty to the fans and players (unless you are an a bad player like Davis, Duda and Tejeda).... they have this bogus plan to make a contending team out of a few young starters.... without giving them anything to back them up.... the bullcrap pen is a joke.... the offense is average at best and defensively the infield.... especially SS.... is unpredictable.... you can put Wheeler and Syndegaard and even Gee on the mound but they cannot pitch a complete game shutout every time..... it is going to be very disheartening to watch them lose or get a no decision after pitching a gem for 6 innings.... and it will be de ja vu.... remember that Harvey should have been 10-0 by May and had 5 no decisions already.... just more of the same.... and the way they treat their players.... Dice-K pitches well.... and is ceremoniously demoted.... Mejia gets a contusion and stays.... Davis, Duda and Tejeda continue to be "rewarded" for inferior hitting and average.... at best.... defense.... I don't know how they are going to win this year.... a bad bullcrap pen, average offense and infield defense does not a winner make..... oh well... I will still stick by them and hope at the very least they do not embarrass themselves.... especially in the late innings.... if the game were only 6 innings.... they might have a chance.... after that.... all bets are off.... and the reruns begin....

I wrote this idea into the Daily News "Voice of the People" when Citifield was being built, along with getting MetLife to buy the naming rights to the new stadium. Sadly, these things are always done after someone is dead and gone.

If there isn't an Kiner's Korner in CitiField, it will just be another Mets blunder.

Wilpons won't do this unless they get a sponsor. Period.

I can't believe how often I've read "management doesn't listen to its fans". If management listened to the fans Jordanny Valdespin would have been playing right field instead of Marlon Byrd last year. The whining never ends. Now if management doesn't immediately decide to name a section after an announcer, once again they are "ignoring the fans".

What is the LF corner called now?  It can't be "renamed" if it's not named first.

When I read the article header I was all for it - but after reading the things they are already doing (particularly naming the booth after him) it honestly doesn't seem needed. I'm not against it though....just seems like over doing it.

@mets69  Enjoy the season!

I can't wait for opening day and am thankful I don't view the team as gloomy as you do. It'll be alright, man. Don't stress yourself out so much.

I honestly think the team will be better than last season and that's even without Harvey. At the least, the team is much more fun to watch now with the young players developing. It's not all fire and brimstone and grey skies.

@Ian Roberts  Kiner played for the wrong ball team team, if he was a dodger or a giant the stadium would have been named after him.

Sadly I agree, I don't think there is a place left uncovered with ads at CitiField. The center field huge billboards made me sick, remember in Major League 2 where ads on the outfield walls was a joke? Now you can't look anywhere without ads in your face.

@lindro88  Thank you for reminding us how awful Valdespin was and how dumb some fans are.

@lindro88  an announcer?  You might not know what Kiner means to the rest of us.

@lindro88  I think you're half right. Management often doesn't listen to its fans, including many times when the fans turned out to be right in retrospect, but this is not (yet) one of those times.

Agree. Sometimes I think the cranks are old Valdespin fans who never got the point. They still don't get it.

It's called the left field corner, just like every left field corner in every other ballpark.

Does Citi Field have a greater number of ads than other stadiums?

@lindro88 Exactly.  But when you say "renamed" it sounds like there is already a name for it.  Like the Mo'Zone.

@lindro88  I'm a really big fan so I deserve at least .5%

Seriously, when I hear people say "Mets fans aren't stupid" I'm going to point them to that post and ask them to try again.

I understand. I'm just saying it sounds like a corny idea. Like someone posted, they named the booth after him, they are wearing a patch, that's more than enough.
