Johan Santana and Josh Thole no-hitter

Mets done with rotation, relationship with Johan is over

The Mets are done adding to the starting rotation, according to people with direct knowledge of the team’s thinking (Martino, Jan. 27).

This offseason, the Mets signed Bartolo Colon and added Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lannan to compete with Jenrry Mejia and other young pitchers for the final spot in the rotation.

Sandy Alderson had also reportedly shown interest in Johan Santana (Lennon, Dec. 10), Jerome Williams (DiComo, Dec. 7), Bruce Chen, Paul Maholm (Heyman, Dec. 10), Bronson Arroyo and Freddy Garcia (Puma, Dec. 10).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

The starting rotation is the least of this team’s concerns, especially with Noah Syndergaard and/or Rafael Montero in the on-deck circle…

That said, as Martino indicates, this probably marks the official end of Santana’s time with the Mets. It’s bittersweet. I loved watching Johan pitch, but he clearly needs a change of scenery when recovering and working back to the big leagues. He’s a dedicated, creative workhorse, and I hope he finishes his career strong. Thanks for the no-hit experience, Johan…

The Mets' relationship with Johan Santana has ended? Really? And this comes after I heard a rumor that Ed Kranepool had retired. Really?

The shockers never end 'round these parts!

Good luck to you Johan, and thanks for the memories! Glad I was able to see a Mets no hitter in my lifetime. Hopefully we see a lot more with the young pitching core we have.

I will miss Santana, he seemed to be a good leader.

I love this team. However, I can't accept the Wilpons spending 90 mil on the roster when we reside in NY. It's a joke, and the only thing I can possibly think about. Most of the dribble on this site would be 100% worthy of discussion if I lived in Milwaukee. But I live in NY, just like the mets do. Figure it out

Few days before pitchers and catchers and hope, especially for us Mets fans, is eternal this time of year. Unfortunately, it won't be long before we realize how bad this line up is and it won't take long before our BP blows a few. By June, we will be out of it and we will be told that 2015 is the year!!!! Let's go Mets.

our offense is strong at times, The signing of Curtis Granderson will bolster the line up and if you look past the PED usage, the age and the fact that he is overweight Bartolo Colon is a hard worker and a constant strike thrower. I understand everyone's frustrations with the ownership and the coaching job but you can't dwell on last season or previous seasons. I honestly feel that it could be worse, we could be exactly like the Cubs or the Astros with 100 + losses per season, In my opinion this ball club was not ment for Citi field, we lack the power hit home runs  so don't expect a monster home run season from anyone, Don't get me wrong it's a nice ballpark but the Mets just can't get anything done there

Santana never lived up to expectations. That said, neither did the team during his stay here. However, he did get the no-no. That said, it was a bit tainted. Although, given Mets history of no-no futility, and the assault on MLB records integrity by Generation Roid, at least a quality name got the first one for Los Mets. That said, a no-no and $1.25 will get fans a small coffee (but not at Shitibank Field).

If the rotation is set than lets focus on improving the offense, make the entire roster legit. To many unknowns with regards to the offense, can we for once acquire players who we can definitely count on. I mean most of the lineup can either be decent or it could be a total mess, not the way to build a team that is hoping on winning more than they lose this year.

All you Met haters, WISH your team had a crew of young pitchers like this.

Yeah, it may take a few more years.....but I hope you haters choke when things blossom.

The guy was never healthy, gave this team one decent year and who cares?  He got us the no hitter then cashed 25 million dollar checks while his arm was busy falling off.  Thanks for the memory Johan now please just retire because you're hurting my heart.

"That said"

The man is helpless without that term!

I'm not quite sure of the attachment to Johan. He had one good year with 2 great games over the length of the contract (6 years). In the last three years, he pitched half a season and made $75 million. I know it's not his fault, but I would expect some sort of feeling to want to make it up to the organization that invested so much in him.

Done with the starting rotation? Yeah the future looks bright but 2014? The NY Mets and NL as a whole know Bronson Arroyo and what he brings to the table and what would the Mets have to loose! for 2 years they could get a great innings eater and great athlete as well as great leader for their up and coming stars!

That said, do you know why you use the term "that said"?

With the worst recorded opening day lineup in MLB history, the Mets will win 69 to 76 games. Citi will be empty past June. They will trade Murphy,Colon and Young mid-season.

Thank god its over.

Here we go again... Pitching rotation is set and every position player is set too. Unless they sign Drew which won't happen, we have same problem players at first and short, Chris Young replacing Byrd, no Harvey and no bullpen. OBP of around 300 and every batter striking out a lot. But, don't worry, we are set. Set to stink from day one. Our starters, if they are truly as good as the hype, have to be perfect and go deep into games for us to be competitive. That means, no pitch counts and no innings limits. Ain't gonna happen. So, get ready for another mediocre season. I guess we are still in rebuilding mode. Looking forward to 2015... Sell the team!!!!!!!!

Just in case I am able to find this comment, I'll ask a question.  Remind me why Young was worth a 7.5 million dollar contract?

@Vinny Oliva Houston has two of the top 5 prospects, considered can't miss stud position players, in AAA, something the Mets have never had.

eric88

Vinny. Offense good at times? Seven starter types on this team hit between .200 & .245 lasts year. This is the worst opening day lineup in MLB history in terms of BA.

Shmuggy,

Don't confuse frustration and anger with hatred. No one cares and bleeds orange and blue more than me but I don't have too many more years left and if we don't push present ownership, they will keep coming up with excuses. Meanwhile, they keep making money with team and use it to pay their other debts. This was supposed to be the off season everything changed and right now, NOTHING has!!! Same manager, same coaches and more or less, same team, without Harvey!!!!! How do you think we are better?!?!?!

@hashburryI hate that term....it's used as much as "you know like umm whatever dude"

How is this the wost lineup in MLB history? It's not even the worst lineup the mets have had on the last 2 years

@eric88 this is the worst lineup in MLB history? On what grounds? This isn't even the worst lineup in the MLB right now!

eric88

@sickntired  In 2015 they will probably lower the payroll again for the 6th straight year!!

eric88
eric88

@sickntired  6 starters in the lineup who hit between .200 and .245 last year. That officially makes it the worst opening day lineup in MLB HISTORY!!

eric88

@chasesimms So stay home until then, unless of course they become a mid-market team again and spend some money..

sickntired

He's not. And if he proves us wrong and has a monster season, he will sign elsewhere next year or get traded for another prospect at deadline. That means we will be 20 out by June. :(

@chasesimms Comments seem to be down considerable.  Obviously some of that is due to the off season and post hot stove period we're in, but they did seem to take a marked drop after the new comments system went in.

ericloz

@eric88 I can think of several Mets teams that were worse then that. I understand your despair, but lets keep it real .

niesesnose
niesesnose

,@eric88 Well seeing as Lagares was a rookie and was hitting well until September it's not even far fetched to think he'll improve. d'Arnaud basically played 1 month and a half last year, extremely small sample size. Duda and Satin will combine to be a solid 1st base platoon (Their wRC would be top 10 in the majors). We don't know if they're signing Drew, and even if Tejada starts he'll improve on last year because he had extremely low BABIP and high line drive rates. Granderson had extremely limited at bats last year and a broken hand, don't count on him hitting .220 again. CY also had a very low BABIP and will probably hit around .230. If you think this is the worst lineup in MLB history, you're either extremely dumb or haven't been watching baseball very long.

@sickntired "Haters" is just a generalization....I don't know if they all actually hate the Mets..

I get your frustration.....but I lost my cynicism a long time ago, when family health issues put things into perspective.

I became less cynical, because I stopped giving a crap..

I  don't sweat the same stuff I used to.... I do think the future is bright.....and I just can't concentrate on the past.

However, the Yankees fans give me agida.....and I'm married to one!!.

Parnell is coming back from major surgery. You lost Hawkins who was you best reliever after Bobby went down. The rest are total question marks! Black may be good but let's not forget he was player to be named later in trade. Let's be real. BP is a crap shoot.

@eric88@sickntiredI believe its been 7 straight yrs and in that span, ticket prices has risen 250%. Who the heck are going to these games?

sickntired

Wonder what excuse they will use then?... Important we make clear to ownership that enough is enough. We've been patient for 5 years. We are not demanding a WS every year like the Yankee fans but a competitive team would be nice. What pisses me off is they lied. 2014 was gonna be the turning point. Guess not... Sell the team.

@Ken Thall Maybe, but Ronnie has to react and speak instantaneously. He doesn't have the luxury of arranging words into a fresh phrase or two, instead of typing the same old one into unconsciousness a thousand days in a row.
