Nelson Cruz

Mets dismiss reports about talking with Nelson Cruz

It’s a stretch to say the Mets and free-agent OF Nelson Cruz have been engaged in continued talks this winter, a team official said (ESPN NY, Feb. 18).

Last week, it was reported that Cruz and the Mets have had some dialogue, but signing him was very unlikely (Daily News, Feb. 14).

Multiple reports in November indicated the Mets had interest in Cruz, because of his power.

However, prior to today, the two had not been linked in any report since Curtis Granderson was signed in December.

Our pick is protected.  If the assessment is he will not be good because steroids was the cause of it, then yes back away.  But this man in the middle of our lineup makes us better hands down.  With that said, its an untrue story.  We signed Granderson and Young.  That leaves one spot open and I doubt they will commit it to Cruz when they have Lageres and next years free agency.  Thats why they signed Young in the first place on a 1 year deal.  They want the flexibility next year.  Cruz would lock them into a so-so player for 3 years.

He's a lateral move at best. The past three years he's been worth 1.3 wins. Steamer has him as a 1.5 win player this year. Just not worth the dollars and draft pick for a team not going anywhere anyway.

242/299/435 career away from Arlington. I'm pretty sure Chris Young can put up those numbers and play better OF. No need to add to the mediocrity.

I keep reading that Chris Young is most comfortable and wants to play CF.... why did the mets go with him instead of signing Cruz to play LF or RF. Every interview etc... C.Young says he feels more comfortable playing CF and that the move to RF was one of the reasons he struggled on offense.

He costs a draft pick? I think that is why most are steering clear of him he will get 15 mil easy before the year starts and would be a guy for 1b even as he was initially a first baseman

For the love god can WE all just stop seeing this on mets blog lol......it's like the Steven Drew crap on here

Of course, the Mets making a move that would excite the fans and greatly improve the team, perish the thought.

I figured we all just dismissed the reports whenever they came up.

"Multiple reports in November indicated the Mets had interest in Cruz, because of his power."

Since when do the Mets value power from the outfield position. There's your first hint this was a bogus story...

Nelson Cruz is a must to this offense if the Mets want to contend at all. We are still missing power and signing Cruz could solidify the middle of our lineup. Wright and Granderson can't do it on their own, neither of them will crack 30 homeruns... Nelson Cruz will and can. The Mets are cheap and this team will be similar to last years, maybe alittle better, still under .500. WE NEED CRUZ!!!

If he was as good as all of you are making him he would of been picked up by someone by now 29 other teams could sign him

1 year with team option for 2nd. Incentives locks in 2nd year. At this point teams are scared of peds so he will need a 1 year deal to lock in better multi year deal. Mets are hoping Puello is ready start of nex year. Deal word work for mets on every level give 12 mill if wasn't offered qualifying offer. 15 if he was. If he hits 275 35 to 40 doubles with 20 home runs plays right. What and upgrade from last year. I know it means no Lagares in cf. But I would start him aaa. If Chris young struggles. Bring up lagares. C. Young defense has always been upper third of mlb. U just just can't compare his defense to lagares who is top five.

Chris Young will outproduce this guy...

there I said it.

I don't get the appeal AT ALL.  I don't want a potato roaming my right field for for the next 3-4 years at 15+ milly a year.  No thank you

Let's say the Mets are a 75 win team as constructed right now...How many wins would the Mets have if they signed BOTH Cruz and Drew?  I think they would actually get to a game or 2 over .500 and make it interesting.  All they would have to do is bring the payroll to UNDER $105 million...it's really not asking too much in NYC...and god forbig the Wilpons actually see fans in the seats and get a return on their investment...I mean, what's the point if you don't want to win and make money???  All you get is hatred from Met fans...

If they DID sign him, where would he play? As is, we've got 4 talented OFers who can't all play at the same time. After all the $$$ spent on Grandy and Young, and what we've see from Lagares, who would you bench, in addition to EY?

Marc Seldin

lol I dismissed it even when that report came out..because how could they even consider signing him when they can barely sign Stephen Drew?

This needs to stop.    No more post about Drew and Cruz unless the Mets sign one of them.  PLEASE.   For the love of Thor!

if Wilmor can play SS this would be so huge for this team this season

RF Young 2B Murphy 3B Wright LF Granderson SS Flores 1B Davis C D Arnaud  CF Lagares

Bench: C Recker 1B Satin SS Tejada OF EY 1B/OF Duda

that would be the best offensive  we could put out there

He is not coming unless they trade Parnell and Murphy[Orioles?].

Everybody just stop, he is not coming to the Mets, they're to cheap.

Besides we just signed Buddy Carlyle and Dana Evelyn, so we just won the NL EAST.

The Mets don't need him. He's really not a proven bat. He's awful at defense and there's no DH to hide him. Haven't you notice the lack of any interest any MLB team has had in him? Only Mets fans make him out to be great. He's not. You don't need him.

Looks like ownership is content with non-contention this year, same as last year, same as year before that....

@metfan722 i wouldnt start a team with him but he's a piece & lagares' dont blow anyone away, slugger power is always key w or w/o 'help'

Brandon Hillman

Also don't see the need for drew if u get cruz. Drew costs u another pick and next year's crop of free agent ss is much better. Tejadas bat in lineup is not as much a hole if u have all three outfielders producing.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@John Paul Cullinane  We can sit here all day and say they should but the point is this is not the Wilpons call. BOA is dictating the payroll number not the Wilpons. Obviously they can't afford either one of them. Get used to Tejada

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Frank Monastra  For the love of god can you people stop with the Flores at SS garbage! They only hope he can be an emergency SS, ala Justin Turner, not the full time SS. Why do you think TC talking about the starting shortstop competition said between Tejada and Q.

And EY isn't going to play RF, he doesn't have the arm for it.

eric88

Wrong,Wrong,Wrong. It's the Mets won't spend.5th highest revenue steam in MLB.

@Starz31 @Dave Rodriguez  Well, that isn't true. Also, did I miss something this winter or did the Mets install a short porch in right field when I wasn't looking?

Starz31
Starz31

@Brandon Hillman  Cruz's benefit would be more than Drew's benefit. The difference between Drew and Tejada is simply not worth $10 million. Cruz would most likely be much better than Young, and at the time of CY's signing, I think it appeared Cruz would get a big contract and was out of our price range. I'm surprised he's still a FA.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@Tarheel11 @John Paul CullinaneWon't have to get used to him as I just won't watch...and I'm not alone.  That doesn't make me any "less" of a fan.  It's just there's no other way for us to have our voices heard.  It is ridiculous that Selig forced out the Dodger's ownership, but allows this to happen in NYC.  I'm not jumping ship to another team...I will just wait until the Wilpons are gone or they make a GENUINE investment in winning.

ac0814
ac0814

I would say they would put the Mets in a very good position to compete for a wildcard spot, given the amount of solid pitching they have.

Lagares/Young-Murphy-Wright-Granderson-Cruz-Davis-d'Arnaud-Drew

That's a solid line up. It's not happening though.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@Starz31 @Thomas McKeever It would definitely make them competitive and put fans in the seats.  It would also be a smart business decision as they may actually see a return on their investment versus them "spending" $25 million on this year's payroll between Young/Colon/Granderson to just see that money go to waste.  They would have been better off not even getting those guys at all.  Call it what it is...they are punting the season.  May as well completely tank if you're going to lose money anyway.  It's a form of loss mitigation...

...what a disgrace.

@metfan722 good article with solid stats just IMO i like the protection cruz gives to the middle of the lineup. And he blows away...

@Starz31 @Dave Rodriguez  in 2012, 7 home runs didn't go out, but none were down right field line and most were in RC, but there is no way to show if it was yankee stadium or another park

Lee Lewin
Lee Lewin

@Dave Rodriguez @Starz31  and if you overlay Citifield on that, only 2 homeruns from that year DO not go out and None are down the right field line

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@John Paul Cullinane @Tarheel11  You are preaching to the choir my friend! Could not agree more! And I never said it makes anybody less of a fan. No one gets more frustrated with this situation than I do so I get it. And I've been the one who is flipping out about Selig because you are dead on. McCourt was forced out and Wilpon is rewarded. It's downright criminal to me.

Starz31
Starz31

@ac0814  Cruz and Drew aren't coming here. And I doubt either of them would be available on a one year offer, maybe one of them would be. But just because they're available doesn't mean we should get them. There's a reason they are still free agents. And that's because their demands don't align with their talent. Drew is an average player. Cruz would be an improvement with his bat but he's been injured a bit the past year and a half and is only declining more. And I just don't see them realistically going after him with the 4 OFers they currently have.

Starz31
Starz31

@John Paul Cullinane @Starz31 @Thomas McKeever  Really? You think the combo of Young/Colon/Granderson is worse than adding Cruz and/or Drew? Even at 40 years old, Colon was one of the best pitchers in the league last year and we added him for a value. He's a placeholder, but you can do far worse then adding a startin pitcher with a sub 2.00 ERA from last season. They may have overpaid for Young but Granderson is a much better player than Cruz is, all around, and outside of last season, is much more consistent. And Drew is an average SS, at best. You're completely off-base if you think adding Drew and Cruz would be better for this team than adding strong pitching and a better all around LFer.

Cruz was really good...3 years ago.

Punting the season? They're better off then they have been in any of the past five seasons. They're not a division contender, but progress isn't punting. The whole idea is let the young pitchers and players get more time and develop. 2014 was NEVER going to be a title year. And it certainly wasn't going to be one when Harvey went down. You need to recheck your expectations.
