Mets, D-Backs talked, found no common ground

The Mets and D-Backs met Monday, but did not find any common ground (Rubin).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

D-Backs SS Cliff Pennington is under contract through 2014, plus they have Didi GregoriusChris Owings and Nick Ahmed, all of whom are top infield prospects. Arizona has said in public that they’re fine platooning these guys. However, it seems to me that would be a waste, since they’re all young and it would certainly slow their development. I heard last summer that Arizona was open to shopping Gregorius and OF A.J. Pollock to get pitching, but I haven’t seen any rumors like this so far this winter.

MLB insiders also say Arizona could be looking for a third team to help them get in on Rays LHP David Price.

Owings stats in PCL show that he has power. And in September call-up, showed to be prepared for the big leagues. Sandy could consider a trade involving him and Montero.

How can we not have any common ground?  They want pitching, we want shortstops....

Diamondbacks don't really have much that we need in terms of players.

Pirates need a first baseman who is not overly expensive and has power in that ballpark. They should go for either Ike or Duda . for one season. they have other talent so these guys one or the other will fit in. For ike we want value back for Duda basically can hve him for anything.

Shouldn't that be the same thing with our pitching surplus? No one wants to trade pitching. We currently have Wheeler, Niese and Gee in the rotation. Plus whoever we grab from the bargain bin. Next season we will have Harvey, Wheeler, Niese and Gee plus whoever the 5th starter is. Then you have Thor, Montero and DeGrom who are considered our best pitching prospects. If we have no intention of trading Harvey, Niese, Gee or Wheeler. Someone please explain how we are going to have these 3 prospects make the rotation? The only one who should remain is THOR. Montero should be considered trade bait.

This is the team they should be partnering up with for a trade.

The three way deal should hold some potential for the mets to get involved it seems to me

Look at the offensive numbers around baseball, between this new deadball era and just a general lack of premier talent, the players we are looking to trade have definite value.

@Victor Triguero It's going to take a while to get them fully into the rotation though.  Lets say Syndergaard gets called up in July/August this year and does well so he starts in the rotation in 2015.  Even then he's going to be on an innings limit.  So it may not be until 2016 until he's pitching a full season.  That's why this depth people keep talking about it a little overstated at the moment.  There's no rush to trade anyone at this point just to make room.

@Victor Triguero I agree. With the surplus of Montero, Mejia, Matz, deGrom, Walters, and many others we should be able to get a slugging 1B or a leadoff SS. Or in the right deal or even a three-way deal we can get both. If Harvey didn't get hurt I would've been very open to trading Niese and Gee, too.

I think they are willing to trade Montero. The question is for who? Montero is a very good young pitcher. I think that we are all so excited about Syndergaard (for good reason), that we might undervalue Montero. Do we package him in a deal for a slugging 1B? Do we trade him straight up for a young SS? Or do we keep him and give him a shot at the starting rotation in ST? He has the AAA innings under his belt and we have 2 rotation spots open.

Don't forget about Majia, Matz, Yona, and to a lesser extent fulmer and mazzoni amongst others.  We NEED to trade some of the SP we have.

when making deals you have to be realistic thats why trades like you proposal never happen.

@Gland1 @Victor Triguero It's not only to make room but to get a bat which we need. If a team has a bat that we need and we have a surplus of young pitching which every team wants then why not trade 2 away to get a vital bat and we still have a surplus.

@Mlb GM Exactly. I am not sure why this team wants to hold on to every pitcher when there are teams out there that need pitching
