Vic Black fires 4v

Mets place Black on DL, activate Matsuzaka

6:55 p.m.: Vic Black has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 24, due to a herniated disk in his neck.

Black recently received an injection in his neck for the injury.

To replace Black on the roster, the Mets activated Daisuke Matsuzaka from the DL.

Black told reporters Wednesday night that he is suffering from a herniated disk, which will likely keep him sidelined for a few more days.

“The doctor didn’t seem too concerned,” Black said (ESPN, Aug. 28). “It shouldn’t be a big deal.”

Terry Collins recently said the Mets could look to use Matsuzaka in the rotation, in an effort to get Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom extra rest after September 1 (Star-Ledger, Aug. 26).

You never have enough pitching......Dice K was pitching over his head this year...In crunch time, i would not count on him......Once the playoff's are over, bring up all of the kids, and drop some of the NEVER WILL BE PLAYERS off of the 40 man...Do not bring up Abreu.........

If you are going to have a 6 pitcher rotatation, bring back Montero and let him get some starts.  What good does starting Dice K do for you?  He is not part of the rotation next season, you are not increasing his trade value as his contract expires at the end of the season.  Montero needs to pitch so you know if he is a canidate for next season's rotation and/or to increase his trade value for this winter.  This is the main reason why Collins should be let go.  He has no idea what he is doing with young players and how to set things up for the future.  I can't wait until September 1'st when he gets Bobby Abreu back and starts giving him the ab's that should be going to den Decker, Kirk & Soup.

Parnell's Curse of the Bad Pillow?  Just DL the guy already. But bring up Noah (who is clearly bored and killing time in Vegas). Give him a taste of the Bigs. Does anyone really want to see Dice-K back?

I love how people here complain about Colon and Matsuzaka because of their age.  On paper, they're worth 15 wins and a save.  Who knows how many games Dice kept us in, out of the pen.  Without them, we might not even have 50 wins yet.

What is with our pitchers with a hernia? . . First with Mejia and now Black.

Bring up the same old retreads who are adequate at best. This organization is a joke.

can they also DL Murphy as well - hard to play with only 21 bodies

I dont care what Vic says. Anyone who knows what a herniated disk is, knows that it is not something that just gets better. It requires surgery regardless and can only get worse with more stress. Unfortunately, Black has a very violent pitching motion that might attribute to this.

DOES IT REALLY MATTER AT THIS POINT?

@Kenneth Meltsner Clearly bored?  So now anyone who doesn't produce in the minors is bored? How about the kid pitches better and earns a promotion?

@Kenneth Meltsner to be honest he has done everything we could have asked of him this year, started, long relief, short relief,

@MetsFan1962 These are two completely different issues.  A 'hernia" is not the same as a herniated disc.  A "sports hernia" like what Mejia has is actually not really a diagnosis of an injury.  The term is more of a catch all that refers to some sort tear or inflammation in the groin area.  A herniated disc is a spine or neck injury where the disks within the spine bulge or become irritated.

I'd be more worried about the sports hernia than Vic Black's neck injury.  I've actually been dealing with a sports hernia myself for about the last 6-8 months.  Its a very nagging injury that at times is very uncomfortable and very difficult to treat.

@Dana Smith That's just not true at all.  Like any other injury it all depends on the severity of the herniation. Just because you required surgery doesn't mean Vic black has the same injury as you.

From the Mayo Clinic website on herniated disks:  "Most people who have a herniated disk don't need surgery to correct the problem"

I had one in my back (in the L5/S1 region of my back bone) surgery in the only cure, I agree.

Yes. You miss the point. Believe it or not, there will be baseball in the future and Black is an important part of that future. If not attended to, his injury will force him out of baseball.

@dukewillie I think these days the term hernia is being used more expansively then the old ball-busting or spinal chord protrusions.

I think?

I was once told I had a hernia of the turn your head and cough variety and the doc said "in the next few years you will need surgery to fix it".   15 years later another doctor says…"you have no hernia at all"

Hope Vic just has a strained neck like the rest of em
