Mets acquire Kelly Shoppach from Red Sox

The Mets announced they have claimed C Kelly Shoppach off waivers from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

4:20 pm: Today at Great American Ballpark, Terry Collins told reporters he intends to use Shoppach primarily against left-handed pitching.

In addition, Collins said they will use the next six weeks to evaluate Shoppach and determine afterwards whether or not to try and retain him beyond this season.

Shoppach has hit .250 with three home runs and ten RBI in 76 at-bats against left-handed pitching this season – he has hit .270 with 31 home runs 83 RBI in 492 at-bats against left handed pitching in his career.

However, Shoppach has hit just .204 with 33 home runs and 114 RBI in 936 at-bats against right-handed pitching in his career.

3:40 pm: Anthony DiComo of says Shoppach will be activated tomorrow.

Shoppach, 32, hit .250 with a .327 OBP, five home runs and 17 RBI in 48 games with the Red Sox this season.

Shoppach has hit .227 with 64 home runs and 197 RBI in 508 career games with Boston, Cleveland and Tampa Bay.

In July, Peter Gammons of said the Mets have considered acquiring Kelly Shoppach from the Red Sox.

Shoppach signed a one-year, $1.35 million contract with the Red Sox this past winter – he can become a free agent after the season.
