Mets bullpen improvements might come from within

The Mets might opt to use their own minor leagues to fill in the bullpen this season, instead of acquire new relief pitchers this winter, Sandy Alderson told reporters on Sunday.

“I think most of that improvement [in the bullpen] is going to come through the development of our young, good arms,” Alderson explained.

Last week, the Mets non-tendered Scott Atchison, and LaTroy Hawkins signed with the Rockies.

Meanwhile, Bobby Parnell is recovering from surgery to repair a herniated disc he sustained in late July. Parnell has said he expects to be 100 percent by Spring Training.

I think this is a good idea. Go ahead and downvote me. I don't care. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T.

Vic Black did a fine job after the trade.  I expect him to  be the 8th inning guy.

And I expect them to abuse Rice at every opportunity, as per usual....

What are some realistic trades for à shortstop. I say trade a big time pitching prospect for a big time ss prospect

In other words: Despite the fact our bullpen has sucked for several years because we won't spend very much on it, we aren't changing our posture.

Best moves left for $ they say they have:

Trade: TAMPA: Ike/tejada for Escobar  -he has 1 w/1 option at 5mil each..he brings a career avg over 7 seasons of 11Hrs..60rbis..278BA..and avg's 61/76 BB/K which is not bad for a guy who will bad most likely 7th or 8th ..and play a legit level of SS denfense for only 5mil in his prime (30). This also spends barely any $ as you move ike and Tejada MLB contracts combined around 4.75mil/5mil escobar.. upgrade at SS with no added expense nicely.

Trade: CUBS:  Murphy/Mejia/ for Jeff Samardzja. He has a contract that will be arbitrated around 4-6mil until 2016. His stats slot him in this rotation nicely as a 3-4 on this but more like a 2-3 guy on 50% of teams. 200ip/200k guy. Similar to Hughes where as fly balls would lower his ERA. Work horse with great commitment as he passed up a legit TE career in the NFL after graduating Notre Dame. This also is a non payroll addition as Murphy will get about 6mil and this would prob even save payroll while adding a legit MLB proven SP for a great price for 3 yrs.  We can than move EYjr to SS and lead him off. The cubs really want a upgrade at 2B as Barney has been brutal for them the last 2 yrs especiall his 200BA last season. Murphy would upgrade the team hitting wise without much expense as well for the Cubs. Win win for both squads.

Allowing some money to be spent on a 1B/Bullpen if we want.  IDEAS?

-Sign Kendrys Morales to play 1B- brings  a career 27/90/280ba...2x13mil with 3 option..

-Sign Morse to play back up OF/1B and bat off bench or sit Lagaeres.. 1 w/1 option 3mil with incentives..

I would like this lineup ..

1-Eyjr 2B

2-Morales1B

3-Wright 3B

4-Grandy LF

5-Morse RF

6-TDA C (hope he is this good cause CYoung at 6 sucks)

7-CYoung CF

8-Escobar SS

9-Neise-wheeler-Samardjza-Gee-Montero/Syndergard

Who will replace all those quality innings thrown down by Brandon Lyon and Frank Francisco, two Blue Jay rejects that came here and astoundingly got top dollar.

Kind of seems like Alderson is telling us that he`s done.

ok....so let us look at the last 3 posts

Tejada may be the starter

EY is not necessarily a reserve

Bullpen improvements will all come from within

Has the Granderson signing really capped the spending? That is what it seems like. I hope not. As much as the Granderson signing was an improvement and necessary, they are no where near an 80 win team. Something tells me they are going to stand pat with this roster. Lets hope I am wrong like I was wrong about them not doing ANYTHING this off-season

They should bring Atchison back.  He's got the half-life of plutonium.

Translation: We have no money and will look to do what we did last year and have an entire pen of ineffective guys that go less then one inning and are continually misused by our buffoon manager.

I agree with this and if the Mets are ok with Montero being the 5th starter out of the gate, I am fine with that as well. Now if they do that and trade Davis, let's just say it's a salary dump, then why don't they have enough money to just sign Drew for SS?

Fine by me, but bring in one vet to help with the young arms. A lot of talent with the young arms

Parnell, black, edgin, germen, familia, Torres. Will miss La troy but I'm fine with that.

Perfectly fine with Parnell(if back), Black, Germen, Familia, Edgin, Walters, deGrom, and any others internally. Focus on the big holes.

Agree with this....one solid veteran would be the limit...guys like German, Leathersich, Black, Edgin, Familia could form a strong unit...

I'm all for young arms but they could use a veteran presence like Latroy Hawkins.

Oh I forgot - they let him go.

@moeb sea has two kids, Miller and Franklin, one of whom WILL be moved. That's my guess

Jacob deGrom, Jeff Walters, Vic Black, ect. are all new arms that have a lot of upside that can help shore up our bullpen.

@Erin II He better not be.  It's been peaceful around here, relatively speaking, since they signed Granderson.  Going into next season with a $73M payroll, given the general awfulness of the lineup, is completely unacceptable. Don't want to hear about the Rays or the A's, their bargain basement ballplayers can play, ours can't.

@Erin II Sure sounds that way.  Definitely looks like Curtis Granderson will be the biggest move of the off season.

Well, I hope they sign a vet SP and then make a few trades, which is very possible and something that I'd be satisfied with.

@Victor Triguero yeah such BS. wow we got a guy not even as productive as byrd (remember the idiots laughing at philly for being wise enough to strike early?) and we get a bench player for 7 million, and now there is little wiggle room. sweet. maybe the mets can trade one of their few good bats in murphy to free up salary and force a guy like EYJ into the leadoff spot, since he can;t even get on base.

ugggh. so far a D grade for an offseason mets.

niesesnose
niesesnose

@Herb Gettelson You're wrong. The payroll is 73m, right nowm they have like 12 or so million left to spend, 16 if they trade davis

....................
....................

@BringBackDaveTelghe exactly. they had a relatively small offseason budget particularly for a NYC team in a non-salary cap league. they blew 7 million on a bench player that they'll force into a starting job and spent 13 million on a guy who can't hit .240 and is old. so yeah all other spots pretty much from "within"

David Schoenfeld
David Schoenfeld

having the money and spending it are two completely different things.  Drew wants ~14 mil per season if i remember correctly.  just because we have 14 mil to spend hypothetically doesn't mean it's a good idea to spend it on him.

@Macacawitz  Seeing today Sandy just said he is now working with a $85MM payroll the Mets off season fat lady is warming up her vocal chords.

Dude, no. There is still an outside chance that he could land Furcal.

@niesesnose

According to Jorge Castillo of the Star-Ledger, Sandy Alderson said today that he is now working with an $85 million payroll figure. Very familiar number…

So now doing some quick math, the Mets have $9.6 million to spend or lets call it $10 million.

If they trade Daniel Murphy, that number goes up to $15 million.

Either way if true, the Mets will have lowered payroll for the fourth straight year under Alderson and this comes after he stated last week that payroll would be higher.
