Mets ‘banking’ on Shaun Marcum to start next Saturday

Shaun Marcum 2 polaroidTerry Collins said they are ‘banking’ on Shaun Marcum being ready to start next Saturday’s game against the Phillies, according to SNY’s Matt Dunn.

Earlier this week, Marcum threw 41 pitches in an extended spring training game – in four innings of work in Port St. Lucie, he struck out five, while not allowing a hit or walking a batter.

Later, Collins said Marcum came away from that outing fine, and they will try and stretch him out to 70 pitches in his next outing.

Marcum is on the 15-day disabled list with neck pain and biceps tendinitis, retroactive to March 22.

I wouldn’t bank on anything with Marcum right now. He has hit every bump in the road possible so far, and so there are no sure things in his recovery from his injuries. Hopefully he’s ready next Saturday, but I expect his next outing will come tomorrow, and more will be learned from that start. Either way, I agree, the Mets need a healthy and effective Marcum for this rotation right now.
