Stephen Drew 6 (AP)

Mets are still looking to add players, willing to bring in Drew

The Mets are more than capable and willing to sign free-agent SS Stephen Drew, Sandy Alderson told WFAN’s Mike Francesa on Monday. However, he added, “It would need to be under the right circumstances.”

Drew is reportedly looking for at least a three-year deal, possibly with an opt-out clause, while the Mets are said to only have interest in committing to him for one or two years.

Alderson said he is still talking with other teams and looking at free agents, be it to add to his bullpen, bring in a primary shortstop, such as Drew, or deal a first baseman.

Ike Davis and Lucas Duda (Baron)He is still in talks with teams about trading for a shortstop, “but the price is always a consideration,” he said.

Also, though the free-agent market for relievers has more or less “evaporated,” he would very much like to bring in at least one more experienced relief pitcher to compete for a spot in the bullpen.

Lastly, in regards to first base, given what teams were offering, it made more sense hedging his bets on first base by letting Ike Davis and Lucas Duda compete for the starting first baseman. That said, it’s possible one of the two could be traded or demoted before the start of the season.

Boras is funny. NO ONE is that interested in Drew for 2 years. His own team isn't that interested so you leak that your demands are 3 years with an opt out after the 1st year? Someone needs to explain leverage to Stephen Drew, he has none right now. The ONLY way I'd give him an opt out is if he agreed to play the first year at a huge discount to compensate for the draft pick they'd have to surrender. The only way I'd go 3 years is if he did something like 5-12-10 with an opt out after the first year.

i would give Drew only up to a two year deal with the one year opt out so he does opt out fine.  then get a different ss in 2015 if it does not pan out . But if he does well and wants to stay fine. But i would not break the bank i would say no more then 10 million a season and that is as high as i think we should go.

I want Drew for 2 yrs plus a team option. If he deserves it then keep him longer. Not sure how fans can say no to this. They can still sign a free sgent ss next yr and slide drew to 2b or deal him or deal Murphy for assets

The Mets starting shortstop is going to be Tejada. The Mets don't have the money to get Stephen Drew.

You only sign Drew for a one year deal or a cheap two year deal. He's just not worth anymore than that and even two years isn't ideal. This is not a future starting SS to build around. He's an average SS that can compliment a winning team with a deep offense but he's not worth a substantial investment when Tejada can provide you slightly less production but for much better value and thus a more favorable deal for the team in the near future. You don't want a Stephen Drew contract to prevent you from acquiring an important piece or adding salary over the next two years.

Speaking to WFAN’s Mike Francesa on Tuesday, general manager Sandy Alderson said the Mets have spoken to many teams about acquiring a shortstop, and are still actively engaged with free agent Stephen Drew.

I don't want Drew. I want a clean house. Get AZ SS Gregorius, Sea 2B Franklin, and stud bullpen help. I want Duda, Tejada, Ike, Quintanilla, Murph, & Young gone (Murph for relievers).

It would be a upgrade from what they have, but we all know the Mets are cheap in their spending for getting talent

I think Tejada is similar to Anderson Hernandez.  They should be good but in reality they aren't.  If Drew is still available then the Mets could sign him and be very lucky to get him.

...if you can get drew AND Cruz on two year deals then do it dammnit....I'm patient and like the wait and see strategy but I'm tired of the wave of Yankee parades and the fact they took over wfan....

Go get Drew!!..We need a shortstop!!..Tejada ain't cutting it!!..

I'm shocked to read Mets fans defending Tejada. Tejada had 1 hr and 25 RBI in 2012. If he had the glove of Ordonez, no problem...but the guy should be happy to be in the majors. Who else would start him?

The "right circumstances" means they are looking to spend rock bottom but will tell us fans that they tried. Then they'll tell us that next year is the year. Then, in 12 months, they'll miss out on someone and tell us that they will be better and will spend next year.

They've been like this for years, as the teams record shows.

Sadly enough bringing Drew here would make him the 4th best position player.

The sticking point with Drew we hear is the opt out after one year and yet the Mets only want him for one or two years. Whats the problem, let him opt out, plenty of good FA SS's next year.

Mets fans have been conditioned to expect less and always look to next year. Many don't even complain about the team anymore and instead show a over the top willingness to wait and show extreme patience. It's unfortunate.

Yet again I must say, they let the best shortstop in the league walk without making an offer.

Dude, are you even a Mets fan? I'd actually rank him ahead of Davis, and MAYBE Chris Young, depending on if he got his stroke back. But that's it. He's a better defender than Murphy, but Murphy owns him at the plate. He doesn't have the tools that Lagares and D'arnaut have. Oh, and if Ike figured HIS swing out, I'd rank Davis ahead of him as well. Finally, if Tejada has removed his head from a certain place, I wouldn't even sign him.

Pat Brady

@eric88  because he ONLY wants to opt out if he's had a good year. If he stinks it up then the Mets can't opt out. I'd say go ahead and do it if he discounted the first year but you know Boras won't let him ever do that. Boras is JUST looking to save face here. He overplayed his position. They have NO leverage and at this point they'll have to take what they can get or wait to see if some team loses their SS in spring training.

Why waste time and money on making an offer that has no chance of being accepted? To make you happy? Before free agency even begun, alderson was told what he wanted. We weren't going to give it to him. Besides, what Miami offered him was beyond stupid, they realized it and got rid of him after one year. Get over it.
