Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson watch BP

Mets will need to be better, says Alderson

The Mets were 15-10 in July, which was the best record in NL.

Sandy Alderson told SNY, though he believes the Mets can sustain this pace the rest of this season, it will still fall short of the 88 wins likely needed to make the post season.

“We’re going to have to be better than that,” he said.

Hey SA to get the playoffs the Met's needed YOU to be better, money for CY and Colon could have been spent much better then it was

We're at the point in the season where CY's contract is no longer an excuse, as 2/3rd's of it has already been paid. Basically we're running out a black hole in the lineup for a little over 2 mill of remaining money owed.....and that is complete insanity.

Gee Niese and Colon should all have been available with only one being traded. You could have gotten a full time player and a little more for any of them. As apposed to everyone else I truly felt Colon was not tradeable on a 2 year contract. This winter or next July for him.

No CY in the lineup tonight!  EY in LF, batting 9th; deGrom hitting 8th; Flores at SS, batting 7th.

1,  Granderson

2.  Murphy

3,  Wright

4.  Duda

5.  d'Arnaud

6.  Lagares

7.  Flores

8.  deGrom

9.  EY

Good times at the ballpark tonight!

Who like this idea, can Gee and Niese make up for Syndegaard? If a team wants Syndegaard, we can offer them Gee, Niese even though They are both established MLB pitchers.

no way mets can sustain this pace. maybe if alderson made something happen at the deadline it would be a different story.

Hopefully Wright can turn it around.. hitting .170 since the all star break.

Ugh! Sandy, you could have made the team better by adding that missing bat all of us are looking for. Making a playoff spot is possible but it's going to tough for our Metsies to maintain the winning momentum.

Is there any chance whatsoever that Terry "The Boob" Collins is NOT managing the Mets after this season?

Matt has now managed to squeeze three separate articles out of one interview. These of course were all accompanied by their own headline in a feeble attempt to make it look like the latest news. Having said all of that if you think about it, Sandy really didn't say much. Claiming that the Mets need to be better over the course of the next two months isn't news, it's math. Basic math. He spoke to a couple of teams about Murphy? Duh! We all knew that. And then with deGrom...Sandy himself admitted that he was dodging the question by being vague. But hey, when you can spew three articles out of nothing.. I guess that does show some sense of talent

David Wright is more and more looking like we should have traded him... .270 avg with 8 hrs so far is not any elite player..so far Murph is basically the same player with more hits and a better BA...who knows what could have been offered for him?..Giving him the contract he now has might have been a BIG mistake.

How about "The owners have to be better!" The Yanks had 4-5 trades, the Mets had nothing.

@1harris1 No issue with this line-up tonight.  Be nice if Flores actually does something.  Over 100 plate appearances now and he has one useless Grand Slam agst the Phils.

What will the complaints about it be? In trying to anticipate the nonsense.

@Mets0987  Kind of doubt it.  Syndergaard seemingly has ace/all star potential.  Niese and Gee are middle of the rotation starters.  Those types are much easier to obtain than a true ace or stud.

Plus, don't forget that you a team doesn't have to pay Syndergaard too much in salary (relatively speaking) for several years.

What could he have done at the deadline to make this a playoff team? I'm just curious who they should have gone after in your opinion, and who they would have to give up in return. I know people tend to take any kind of response as an attack on this site. I'm not disagreeing, I'm just curious what you had in mind.

@bbr7 and who was Alderson going to bring in that would have made such a difference?

Sometimes cortisone shots can make you more stiff. Especially if they are administered in a joint. Unless they hit the exact spot of injury, they do no good. He looked way better and wax hitting lights out before then.

@Marc Singleton . . . Just remember our SNY broadcasters Gary, Ron and Keith thinks Terry is doing a very good job with the team.

@Albert E Lewis He's had a bum shoulder all year. And very badly needs the occasional day off--which Terry rarely provides. The guy has had several of these lingering injuries the past few years. Also no protection in the lineup.

Tarheel11

@Albert E Lewis I said it months ago, he changed his swing. Go look at old video of Wright, prior to this year. His swing was predicated on turning in his left shoulder to the point of almost seeing his name on his jersey. Coincidence that he finally came out and said he hurt his left shoulder? I have no clue but it's painfully obvious his swing isn't the same.

That and the fact that he's pulling off everything and trying to pull even outside pitches

If he doesn't don't worry. There will be more excuses made.

My guess is it will be Flores batting in front of the pitcher. You know it helps Tejada's obp but it hurts Flores because he won't get a pitch to hit.

@theglider cambell went 2/4 last time he played, turned around a 98 mph fastball off a righty and still has not got an AB since.. he can actually hit opposed to ey and cy

@theglider That's EXACTLY what I was thinking when I first saw this posted. My money is on DW and EY.

As do many broadcast teams around the league. I was out of town for a few months, and watched the Mets on the MLB Extra Innings. I was curious to see what other broadcast crews sounded like. Any time Collins came up, it was usually in a very positive way. A lot of comments about "doing more with less". I think there is some truth to that. He's not a creative in game manager, but he has kept a team that was on the verge of falling completely off the cliff, within 5 games of .500. They have played well for two months, and that corresponds with the emergence of a legitimate 8th inning guy, closer, and the major improvement of Duda. Terry takes heat on here for not playing Wilmer Flores, or using CY. The reality is if the FO wanted to get a good long look at Flores, he'd be in the lineup.

nym68

@alphaq @nym68 that's when I was an avid reader. I never did the chat room thing, but I enjoyed the site itself. But then he sold it to SNY (or whatever the official term is -sold out is more likely) and suddenly he became a spokesperson for the Wilpon's. He really doesn't say anything interesting anymore. It's all crap like these last three articles with an occasional short interview thrown in for good measure. So you're absolutely right when you say it's all about page clicks. Because we all know it sure isn't about substance anymore and hasn't been for a long, long time

theglider
theglider

Excuses will be made if Flores goes 0-4. There seem to be more excuses than he has hits.

theglider
theglider

The complaint will be about EY. They'll point to his OBP even though he has speed and gets on more than some other players on this team.

Football coaches play a much bigger role than baseball managers. The A's won 100 plus games or close to it, several times with Art Howe as the manager. Rex got 8 wins out of a team with the lowest rated QB and an offense that generally was totally devoid of playmakers. Baseball is such a long season. They play everyday. NFL coaching staffs have a week to get the team ready. It's really a coaches league. I'm not saying managers aren't important, but the value of a good coaching staff in the NFL is much greater than it is in baseball.

@imjimmybx You have to keep certain guys....if the wilpons even spent as little as 110 mill nobody would be talking about Wright. Wright is injured AND Wright is on the downside of his career. But if not for the injury, he's still a good 3rd hitter.

Cheryl Ann

Supposedly suffered bruised rotator cuff June 12 on head first slide. Missed 7 games after MRI showed no structual damage. Had cortisone shot after last game before ASB. That's the "non-mystery injury". Who knows what else is out there or if he's made it worse or injured something else trying to compensate. He's just a mess right now. I think beyond the physical stuff, the struggles have gotten in his head. A real hot mess.

Let's give him a week. We gave Tejada two years.

@sjm25 @Albert E Lewis @alphaq  I understand that this organization wanted to build around him but by the time this team is a contender again he might not be playing anymore. How does 3 yrs ago help now?Im saying maybe it was a mistake to sign him to that contract.

@imjimmybx He'd be an albatross contract right now. We should have traded him but at least we got Plawecki in the draft for him.
