Mets are done with the bullpen, still negotiating with Michael Bourn

Brandon Lyon polaroidToday at Citi Field, Sandy Alderson spoke with reporters and said if the team completes a contract with Brandon Lyon, the Mets will likely be finished adding pitchers to the bullpen this winter.

Yesterday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports said the Mets were close to signing Lyon.

“The bullpen can’t be worse and has [potential] to be a lot better,” Alderson explained.

Alderson said Jenrry Mejia will enter camp as a starting pitcher, while Jeurys Familia will be a reliever.

In regards to the possibility of signing Michael Bourn, Alderson said he is still in negotiations with his agent.

Alderson doesn’t believe the rule on draft pick compensation and protection needs to be changed – he thinks the interpretation of the rule needs to be altered.

Alderson said that before they ask the league to protect their first-round draft pick, they would want terms to a contract agreed upon with a player requiring draft compensation, such as Bourn.

If they do not sign Bourn, Alderson said it’s possible they will go into camp with the outfielders currently on the roster.

Lastly, Alderson has not had recent discussions about a contract extension with Terry Collins.
