Montero

Mets are discussing when to promote Syndergaard, Montero and deGrom

The Mets are currently discussing when to promote Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and other young pitchers from Triple-A to the big leagues, Assistant GM John Ricco told WOR 710 AM before Wednesday’s game.

According to columnist Andy Martino, Montero is more likely to be promoted than than deGrom (Daily News, May 7).

“The way Paul DePodesta has talked about it, and I agree with him, is that we want to bring them up when they really don’t have anything left to prove or work on in Triple-A, because that means they can help us win with their talent,” Ricco said. “Notwithstanding, we’d like to pitch better out of the bullpen [at the big-league level], but rushing one of those guys and putting on pressure and creating a situation where they’re the savior is not something we’re looking to do.”

According to Ricco, Montero has been working on “the little things,” such as holding runners on at first base and fielding his position, which is what the organization asked him to do when he left Spring Training.

In regards to whether Syndergaard could end up pitching in relief, Ricco said, “The conversations we’ve had internally indicate all options are open,” and he shouldn’t be separated from Montero and deGrom.

That said, he concluded, “We look at all guys individually and do what’s best for them, but viewed against the backdrop of what they can do for the big-league team. It’s fairly complex situation.”

And for the first time in the history of baseball the minor leaguers are demanding to be traded to another minor league team rather than play for this major league team :-/

That's more of a knock on this ownership than anything. I feel like there's a lot you can look beyond as a fan but when OWNERSHIP is this bad it's really impossible to be optimistic.

Here is an interesting stat:  the bullpen pitchers the Mets have used in 2012 and 2013 contain 14 pitchers who are no longer on a major league roster, not counting Black, Edgin and Burke.  That seems pretty high to me.  It's a who's who - Ramon Ramirez, Manny Acosta, Robert Carson, Jon Rauch, Frank Francisco, Sean Henn, Pedro Feliciano, Aaron Laffey, DJ Carrasco, Tim Byrdak, Jack Egbert, Garrett Olson, Brandon Lyon, David Aardsma.

To quote the Perfesser - "Can't anyone here play this game?"

The question is. What DaFuq are they waiting on

True, we need pitching but we need bats more! Having no hits means you can't score. These guys seem to be a huge slump in the hitting department.

If they can explain to themselves WHY the bullpen isn't doing the job, and rule out that it's uncontrollable variables, with more talented players meaning better results, promote these kids. If there's any mystery as to why Farnsworth, Dicek, and the former Tiger went from effective, to erratic, and it might not be controllable, than it stinks to risks two prospective, young talents. Especially Montero, who might be more pitcher, than thrower, which has been lacking in the system, with not much apparent guidance from the pitching coach staff.

When as soon as it buys the Mets another year for free agency. I can't believe a Met owned Network is asking this.

I'd settle for a real shortstop at this point. 7-8 in our lineup is hitting .195. This team is very frustrating,

Right now!! As much as the Mets play hard every game they have zero realistic chance of making the playoffs this year so why not bring up the young guns?? Just hope the Mets delusional general manager can see that!! 90 wins Sandy?? Please...

Need bats. Won't do these guys any good if they can't score runs.

I would promote all three after two more starts & the corresponding moves for their promotions should be option Gonzalez German to Vegas, DFA Daisuke & put Kyle Farnsworth on waivers. Make Noah Syndergaard & Rafael Montero the 4th & 5th starters, put DeGrom in the bullpen & make Meija the closer. #LGM

@Pat Brady  is this a joke? what does this have to do with ownership and this is not an uncommon practice. The cardinals have done it... seems to work for them.

@dave42  - It sure does seem as though the Mets are every players last stop before being out of baseball right? I mean our CLOSER, our last TWO closers are both guys that no other team wanted. Farnsworth is a guy even the METS didn't want when the season broke. When they eventually cut Scott RIce will he pitch another inning in the big leagues? This is a guy that Terry Collins said is probably suffering from being overused last year. Note to Terry Collins; you MIGHT want to listen to what Terry Collins said. How is it that their ONLY lefty is a guy that even THEY think shouldn't be here?

Besides Wright is there ONE starting player on the Mets that would see consistent playing time if they were on the Marlins?
