Mets announce pitching schedule for first week of games

Mets RHP prospect Rafael Montero will start the team’s first Grapefruit League game against the Nationals this Friday in St. Lucie.

We should trade from our strength, pitching at every level, and fill our weaknesses. Why we haven't is puzzling to say the least. I would LOVE to get Franklin SS from the Mariners, who is available. He is a maturing 22 year old who is filling out and will be a big offensive SS with some power, range and speed. Also I would move Ike and put BIG BAT Wilmer Flores at 1st base for the next decade. Then you would have CY, Flores, d'arneau, Legares batting 5, 6, 7, 8th in the order with Franklin leading off and  Muph, DW, Grandy at 2, 3, 4. I would love that Lineup. Duda, EY, Tejada, Satin, and Recker off the bench.

Contender!

"Montero, Lannan and Matsuzaka are competing for the last spot in the team’s rotation."

You mean Mejia, Lannan and Matzuzaka.

Is the game Friday televised? Is there a link to a televised game schedule?

Good! Let him get outthere and show what he can do. The Mets will showcase Montero as much as possible as he is trade bait.

Really people, clearly the Mets have a schedule for the "sure things" (Colon, Niese, Wheeler, Gee) and I'm sure they made that schedule by going from Opening Day backwards and found out that they could all get the needed starts in with Niese starting on Tuesday.

Did they mix up Montero and Mejia?

Since when is montero in the mix? I'm happy about that, but he hasn't been said to be in the competition. Is he really a possibility?

So Mejia isnt competing

Are they saying Mejia is out already?

"Montero, Lannan, and Dice-K are competing for the last spot in the rotation."

Did Mejia fall off a cliff recently?!

@eric88  Agree with Franklin 100%. Franklin seems like a player who can do a little bit of every thing. Despite the fact he struggled last year as a rookie, his minor league stats have consistently been between .270 and .300 with the potential to hit between 15-20 home runs. Not to mention his great defense.  Opposed to someone like Drew, he can be another piece to an already promising young core. SIGN ME UP!

And i agree with Jimmy on Flores. He is intriguing as the Mets solution to first base long term because i do believe he could be an impact bat.  But i think he's more valuable as trade bait, as well as Montero. I

think the mets still need to add an impact bat, whether it someone like Kemp or Cargo. Hypothetically speaking, if (and thats a big if), you can get someone like that on Montero, Flores, and someone else, you could live with Lucas Duda or Davis at first

I mostly agree with you. However, if we had a choice between Nick Franklin or Brad Miller, I would trade for Brad Miller. He is better than Franklin defensively, and profiles as a better Leadoff Hitter, which we need. I suspect the Mets are pushing Dice-K and Lannan to pitch early in ST as showcase items (trade bait), in case they are back to their better days. Seattle wants an OF and/or a mid-rotation SP.

As for Flores at 1B, it doesn't sound like that's in the Mets' plans. Though I think if he was hitting in the 5 hole, he could drive in enough runs to be a productive First Baseman. Everyone thinks a 1B should have 30 HRs, but Flores could have the same or more RBIs than the average 1B, so it doesn't matter. It would be nice to have him there until Dominic Smith comes up in a few years.

I agree, the two things working against us are he was a very well thought of prospect last year, just because he struggled the last two months doesn't mean his value is lowered. The other is there's a bunch of sentiment he doesn't have the range to play as full time..

@sell  Yep that's what it should read. Montero is technically competing but they're not going to give up a year of control over him. Good call.

@drmetfan  If we can get solid production out of Dice K, Lannan, or Mejia over the first 3 months they would also be trade bait. If Montero does what he'd need to to be coveted by other teams around the league why would the Mets want to trade him when he has his whole career ahead of him.

@Chris Cocaa He's always pitched better as a starter, so yes, the Mets will throw him in the pen.  If he's  not our opening day #5, there is something wrong.  Dice-K and Lannan are a washed up and a never was or will be.

@Devin Green No, that was a Metsblog error.  Mejia is in the mix for #5.  We all know the importance of super two in Mets baseball.  If Syndergaard starts in AAA then Montero will as well.

@Devin Green  Agree with you Devin. I thought it was pretty well accepted amongst fans and execs that Montero wasn't being closely considered for the 5th starter right out of spring training. Why would we've signed Lannan and Dice K if not to compete with Mejia to hold down the 5th starter until Montero comes up mid-season. I am rooting for Mejia to win the rotation spot. Inevitably a pitcher will go down to injury and we will need to bring up Montero. I don't like Montero in the pen at all.

@Devin Green  Before Sandy acquired Lannan and Dice-K, Montero was in the mix for the 5th spot in the rotation, I believe.

@dannym28  Don't forget he's still recovering from an injury..Lets no go crazy over the first week. He'll get his work.

@tommets  Guys, it's just the opening week of exhibitions. I for sure want Mejia to won the 5th spot in the rotation. His turn to pitch is coming soon, I'm sure.
