Mets among 3 teams interested in Cuban C Yenier Bello

The Mets, Padres and Braves are among teams interested in Cuban C Yenier Bello (Sanchez, Jan. 28).

Bello, 28, was fully cleared this past weekend to sign with a big-league team. He has been scouted by 15 to 20 teams so far this winter (Sanchez, Jan. 24).

It’s not yet clear what it might take to sign Bello, who is not as highly-regarded of a player as Jose Dariel Abreu and Yasiel Puig (MLBTR, Jan. 24).

The Dodgers, Cubs and Blue Jays had been linked to Bello in previous reports.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

There isn’t a ton of information available on Bello. The buzz in baseball is that he’s got a big swing and the potential for at least 20 home runs. However, people say he’s not a catcher, he’ll eventually end up at a corner infield or outfield position. Also, no one calls him a ‘prospect,’ since he’s 28 with a questionable path to the big leagues.

Does Bello mean fatass in his country?

If Sandy ends up signing a fat backup C, an old fat ped SP, on old LF, and a Scrub CF/RF while keeping Tejada at SS, then he should probably go ahead and resign.

He' s not considered a prospect and looks fat, so we have a shot at getting him.

How come metsblog neglects to mention there is another Cuban defectee named Aldemys Diaz that is an actual SS that will be available soon?

He must be cheap and not very good or the Mets would have no interest in him.

Isn't 28 in Cuba 47 in real life?

This is a bad pic, but you can still tell the angle and the jersey are making him look big.  You can see his lats. Google the guy.  He is not overweight any means.

I can just picture Colon pitching to this guy! Hysterical!

From the looks of it, a couple of cases of Dos Equis!

they owe so much in debt. stop complaining why they didnt sign abreu..  stop saying we are a new york team we should spend the money.THEY ARE BROKE!!!! If and when they pay back the loans, and dont spend then you can complain.  Before madoff, the mets wre in the top 5 of payrolls every year.

And we're interested in 28 year old Cuban unknown catcher because????

With the money they would spend on this guy, they probably could just get Drew for a few million more with an extra year

Why?  Is it Bello or Belly?  Of course the Mets would be interested in the least sought after Cuban player.

He's a very questionable possibility.  Which means the Mets are likely very interested.

Forget this guy unless we are gonna have a wrestling match in case of a tie instead of extra innings. Bring in Nelson Cruz already, What's the holdup?

Looking at his picture....Bello looks to beefy to make it around the bases with ease. Sandy, please pass and more on to somebody we know about. I want to "beef" up the team but Bello is Mooo.

Let someone else overpay this guy.  We've already got enough questionable players who can't play defense.

We need a backup catcher the guy is 28 sign him and hopefully at some point he is good enough that we can put him at 1st base if Ike sucks it up again and yes Nelson Cruz would be nice

he looks like he's about 7'4 455 lbs.

if he can play first base and hit for some power then let's see what he's got. there is absolutely no way he can be worse than duda. and i highly doubt he can be worse than ike or satin

He looks like that Japanese third baseman they almost signed in 2002, Notedgardo Notalfonzo.

Be nice for MLB to go after AMERICAN ballplayers...that's Cuban Americans, Irish Americans, African Americans, Italian Americans etc. So sick of how we ignore our own. $3Billion to Syria but nothing to rebuild Detroit. makes no sense.

I'm sure that we have many AMERICAN ballplayers.

Why sign a guy with huge upside at a position we desperately need an upgrade (Abreu) when we can sign a no-named catcher and move him to a position he may not be able to play.  That said, typical Mets.

Those blue pants are certainly not flattering... Got a bit of a Butch Huskey vibe to him...

I guess this counts as new Mets news, but do you really think he's going to sign to be a back up catcher?

Come on Alderson, do something to clean up the 1B, 2B, and SS mess. I have confidence in Alderson, he's going to shuffle the Davis, Duda, Flores, Satin, Murphy, E. Young deck before ST.

@eric88Heck not only do we have a shot of getting him, we should overpay him once we do sign him!

@metsopsis Reports indicate he is most likely a 2B, or OF in the big leagues.  Strong Arm, limited range, average runner, routinely at the top of error leaders in Cuba

@shaun Look more like Boombah pants that these guys in my Wed night slow pitch league wear

Nelson Cruz would be terrible. Maybe if we bring him in on a Minor League deal or something. He's probably one of the most overrated players in the game and a Texas/PEDs mirage. Pretty sure Puello would put up better numbers in Citi than Cruz over the next 3 or 4 years.

paqza
paqza

@Ziggy Jones He could absolutely do worse than Duda, Ike, or Satin, and incidentally, out of the guys you mention, Duda's the one projected to have the best numbers in 2014. Duda's a better overall hitter than Satin and has a higher floor and better defense than post-ankle injury Ike.

The Cuban League is like A ball - Port St. Lucie. Plenty of guys do well in A ball who never make it to the bigs - most, actually.

Yes, about as much as we need AIDS.

@Ed Renner Lol. Because the Mets don't have any "'muricans"? It's like the people arguing that Minaya signed too many Latinos.

@nthmetsfan Was thinking the same thing - even has a swing like a guy playing high arc softball.

No I love murph I was being sarcastic, when I said mess in right field I meant cy, I think grandy in left legaras in center and cy in right that's what I think will be the outfield , ey doesn't hit very well either I think legaras will get the nod. I love murph I wish the mets had 10 Murphs, gritty scrappy ball player could not for the life of me understand why mets fans would wanna get rid of him, but they want to keep dogs like tejeda and Ike

paqza
paqza

@Steven Matregrano @Mike Dell Italia You've gotta be kidding. Lagares and EYJ basically put up the same offense last year (EYJ got on base a bit more, Lagares showed more power) but Lagares was the best center fielder on a per-innings basis in all of baseball while EYJ was a slightly-above average left fielder.

There is no way that EYJ starts over Lagares unless Lagares starts 2014 in the Minors. Actually, if the team goes with EYJ as a starter entering the year, we're gonna have a baaaaad time. He's a 4th OF/pinch runner/backup 2B at best. That's his upside.
