Mets acquire Pirates pitching prospect to complete Ike Davis trade

The Mets have acquired LHP Blake Taylor to complete the trade that sent Ike Davis to the Pirates in early May.

The Mets also got RHP Zack Thornton in the deal.

Taylor was drafted last season by the Pirates in the second round.

He entered the season typically ranked the 16th-best prospect in the Pirates system (Pirates Prospects, April 1).

He had a 2.57 ERA last year in 21 innings.

His fastball sits between 89-92 mph, according to online scouting reports.

Taylor, a high draftee out of Dana Hills, California, will be assigned to the Mets rookie-level Gulf Coast league affiliate.

Davis has hit .252 with a .736 OPS and four home runs in 50 games since being traded to the Pirates.

Whatever. So they got two average prospects in return for someone they would've simply released (and who deserved to be released).

I thought we were getting Austin Meadows? This doesn't make sense.

I actually live in Southern California and have seen him multiple times in the travel ball circuit.

The velocity reports are honestly inaccurate from what I saw when he was a senior. His fastball sat upper 80's to mid 90's and I've seen him hit 97. He doesn't si t"88-92" more like "88-95" finding 96-97 at times and with legit movement.

Good hitters take bad swings against this kid. Hes a ways out but is genuinely a HIGH QUALITY arm!

Can't help but notice that photo of the young pitcher is from far, far away. That describes the changes this Mets organzation has of, oh, playing .500 ball - they're far, far away.

If you walked into the Mets front office with a tee shirt on that said "Carpe Diem" the staff would all wither and die.

Wait till next year and next year until those "prospects" mature. Sound familiar?

We got a 2nd round pick, 16th overall prospect in the bucs system for a guy we would of non tendered at the end of the year cause he'd be making 6-7 mil in arbitration and still suck.. be grateful we got anything let alone a 2nd round pick

It would be great if all Mets fans could just hybernate until 2016. Save everyone a lot of daily BS. Just an endless ground hog day loop of the daily negative Mets existance that doesn't matter.

The Mets hated Ike. They moved him for a possible reliever and a long way down the road pitching prospect. Okay. Fine. Pay it forward. Whatever. Back to the grind.

"Pretty significant" player I never heard of. Gotta love adding a player that won't help us until 2019, at the earliest. Is 2019 now the year?

Michael morse is a free agent I believe the Giants contract was only one year six million. may need to give him 3 years $20 million to come to mets. he can hit and is within mets pathetic budget but is his LF defense adequate for Citi?

Good work Sandy.....Can ya find us a bat????

The only downside is that by making these trades for pitching prospects that he did so well with, he is helping to set the value of pitching prospects he will have to live with when he tries to flip pitching prospects for young hitting.

Best news I have heard all day, well done Sandy

Good return for ike, sandy does very well in trades for the most part. That being said it's time to spend money now and add a SS , lf, and 1b before next season or no one is gonna care.

"The Mets and Pirates completed the April 18 trade of Ike Davis  by acquiring LHP Blake Taylor a 2013 second round pick.

The Mets traded Davis to the Pirates for RHP Zack Thornton and a player to be named later."

So...is It Taylor or Thorton?

Can't expect the mets to get anything better for Davis. Good trade I day.

Good trade I think but not the point. I am a defender of Sandy but it is time. Make a trade a get some bats in here like 1984 when Keith got here . Enough akready!

Time will tell, until then, this admin. Is playing its fans for morons. I for one wouldnt waste one dollar to see them play.

This is ridiculous.

Ike played himself out of here.  It's easy to kill SA, but he made the most out of a bad situation with Ike.  That said, I'm not excusing him for keeping Duda at 1B.  That's a joke.

I wonder if Ike played better would the player be if a higher calibur? Even if not that's 2 more prospects to the system

Kevin McManus
Kevin McManus

Why all the complaints? Did you guys really expect that the Pirates would give us Meadows or McGuire? And SA's the idiot . Here is a young lefty drafted in last years 2nd round and one of their systems top 20 prospects . A system with more talent than ours . We got Steve Matz out of High School in the 2nd round so who knows what will become of this kid. At least iwe got something . I guess most of you would prefer having Ike still here underachieving so you could complain as opposed to rooting for what is now a pretty well stocked minor league system. Finally another lefty to go with all those RH power arms. Well done Sandy

@Kevin Joseph Patrick Blake Taylor is pretty significant.

He is a solid arm in the Pirates system, and could become a peice of the rotation,or become a solid arm in th

Ron W. Davis

@Kevin Joseph Patrick i understand its long term but honestly the speed Sandy is building we maybe not in full contention till 2017 so we can't heave enough pitchers and lefties especially. so ok lets be ok with this . Second rounder is a good pickup .

Robert C. Smith

@Kevin Joseph Patrick You nailed it, Mr. P. All Mets fans get is a buncha "tomorrows," as if Annie was the GM. There ain't gonna be any "tomorrows" unless we get an ownership with the same sense of urgency that sick-of-waiting fans have.

But then again, I don't want to sound like revisionist history; I said at the time that Davis can't play and that anything the Mets got in return would be a plus, and I'll stand by that. Davis is a stiff and it was addition by subtraction.

@bptomatoes Morse is too big of a risk.  He is still not good defensively and he has been regularly hurt.  He is going to get a big contract off the year he is having, i am not willing to give it to a one dimensional player, that spent half his career on the DL.  I would rather sign Seth Smith from SD for less, and that is not really an option.

I do not think we are going to get a big power hitter.  I think the team  really wants to find a true lead off hitter that can be put out there every day and a good overall hitter who can play SS.

Did you actually utter the words "spend money"? "SPEND MONEY?" Bwhahahaha. Silly man.

@John G Oleon I'm not a GM, but it seems like it's *really* hard to acquire a solid bat, even one that still needs time in the minors.  The Rays gave up two of their starting pitchers to get Will Myers.  Remember that the Mets were able to acquire Keith because he was coming off a cocaine embarrassment and had landed firmly in Whitey Herzog's doghouse.

@John G Oleon  While we obviously need offense at the major league level, we also need to restock our pitching at the lower levels after spending all our top picks on hitters in recent years.

@bigdirty  No, the player was agreed upon at the time Ike was dealt.

Daniel Burnard
Daniel Burnard

@Kevin McManus  Its not the idea of what he got because I would of been happy with a pack of pens and some ditto paper. The problem I have with it is once again Sandy the snake oil salesman mislead the press and fans by saying the player was a significant part of the trade.

Whats wrong with just being honest and saying we got the best deal we could. Most of the fans I think understood that we weren't going to get a lot for ike I mean the played his value down to nothing.

Scott Ross
Scott Ross

@Robert C. Smith Yet, you are backing people who are complaining about the mets adding a player for later.  Alderson was lucky he got anything in return; and the fact is he, he actually got something significant.

cbbruuno
cbbruuno

@Clyde Spillenger @John G Oleon THis is a good point. People still can't understand why they traded Keith for so little even with the problem. There is even the theory that they traded him for so little as a personal insult to Hernandez (though that seems lie something only 1980s George Steinbrenner would do). Point is, people who think you can just make another trade like that seem to not understand how rare that deal was. You will have to give up a lot more today for something comparable to Keith.

Kevin McManus
Kevin McManus

I agree with you. Even with the wording of it SA does come across as if he is selling the fan base on moves instead of just being honest with us so I agree with Ty 100% on this.

The end of the day SA got what is probably the best possible return for Ike

Matt Marcellus

He said "pretty significant". As a 2nd rounder, I'd say he wasnt misleading. Especially compared to Thornton, Taylor clearly is significant.

Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey were quite highly regarded pitchers at he time. Allen was the Mets closer and Ownbey the number one pitching prospect.

Alderson never said 'pretty significant'... That was a reporter. And i would rather have the Pirates number two selection than their number eight.
