Mets 2B prospect Dilson Herrera an above-average, every-day 2B

Mets 20-year-old 2B prospect Dilson Hererra is capable of becoming an above-average, every-day, big-league second baseman, “and maybe more,” ESPN.com’s Keith Law said in a recent online chat (ESPN, Aug. 22).

“If he ended up on a few All-Star teams, I wouldn’t be shocked,” Law added.

Dilson Hererra

Herrera has hit .320 with a .378 OBP, 12 HR, 31 doubles, 65 RBI and 22 stolen bases between Single- and Double-A this season.

Herrera was acquired with Vic Black from the Pirates for John Buck and Marlon Byrd at the end of the 2013 season.

“When you have a kid who plays hard, and knows his game so well, he’s not going to have a problem. He’s a package,” Single-A hitting coach Joel Fuentes told Toby Hyde earlier this season >> Read more at SNY’s Mets Minors from June 25.

I would trade Tajada and Flores..Both have potential for the right team......Lets bring up Rivera and Reynolds......We have a ton of pitching, and i would trade Niece / before his arm falls off.......Familia needs to be the closer.....He is nasty.............

Murph playing in a hitters park could be a top 5 2nd baseman

3 more hits tonight for Herrera.........He seems like the real deal............Murphy is all heart and an excellent hitter.......He has the power to hit over 20 HR'S if that was asked of him....Yes torn on what to do with him...........I would only trade him if we got a quality LF who is not streaky like Grandy....

I say trade Murphy. In my opinion he is a defensive liability and this team is building around power pitching. Next thing you need after pitching is solid defense, especially up the middle. You need to give something up to get something back and Murphy's value won't get any higher

I can't believe some people want to see Murphy traded. Leads the league in hits, and the only pure hitter we have. I guess they think he's too good for the mets

Somebody lend him a $20, I hear he's a little short this week.

this is not a ringing endorsement.  i am hoping for more.

Murphy needs to be traded as his $ is outpacing real production. need to upgrade defense up the middle.  Hope Herrera and Reynolds can do it.

Moving Murph and Colon along with the old CY would open up enough money to easily bring in Hardy and Melky or Cuddyer and a utility veteran to help with Reynolds at 2nd next year.  Bonifacio or a Roberts type guy who is not expensive, but can do multiple things just to rest and not overexpose the rookie while providing good defense would fit the bill.

We can use a Cuddyer for a couple of years and his contract will begin to end as Conforto is at a time to take over full time.  it is a good situation.

Lagares

Granderson

Wright

Duda

Cuddyer

TDA

Hardy

Reynolds/Veteran Utility guy

pitcher

Solid up the middle defense (much much much better than now, better protection in the middle and Granderson out of the leadoff hole. other teams will have to respect Hardy and Cuddyer just on name.  2-6 all get better pitches to hit.

Steve, you're a riot. Did I say Herrera was the next Joe Morgan? I only said no one should be worried about his size. Why would Boston be interested in Murphy? Because as I pointed out Ortiz will be 39 next season. He can't go on forever. Did I say Murphy would replace Pedroia? No. I said Murphy would make a good DH in the AL. Until Ortiz retires Murphy could fill in for either Napoli or Middlebrook. If Boston traded Gomes to replace Cepedes in the Oakland outfield, it means Oakland gave up a compensatory pick for him. That means Boston took Cepedes in trade for Lester (a rental player) and cash. A 4-for-1 trade isn't far off. I know you think you're a baseball genius but you don't think much. LOL!

Just let someone claim Colon and his salary. Adios to his $11m next season. They didn't use a prospect to get him. Don't worry about getting one back. They need to free up cash to (in theory) sign better players. Free up cash for Tomas (I know, a pipe dream)!

Is David Wright "tradable"  ?????

Keep Murphy.

Install him at his natural position 3B

Put Herrera at 2B

Wright for Kemp ?????

Dodgers need a 3B

They get at least some salary relief dumping Kemp

Crazy ? Unrealistic ?

For anyone who might be inclined to worry about Herrera's size (5-10, 150), Joe Morgan was 5-7, 150 as a rookie. I think did okay for himself.

I'm super excited about this kid. When I defend Sandy on other threads, it's precisely because of his ability to make deals like this one. We're looking at a potential mainstay at 2B for the long-term and all it cost was a month and a half of Marlon Byrd.

Even if you believe Sandy "lucked into" the TDA/Syndergaard haul (a highly questionable point of view) the Herrera/Black return was sheer, inarguable skill.

I said it months ago, Mets need to deal Murphy. Too bad some uneducated baseball fans in these blogs call me crazy. We have a team build on pitching and Murphy defense will kill this team in years to come. Much rather have an average mlb hitter with good defense over one with bad

Murphy gets traded this winter or next season? Does Dilson get dealt in a package for a shortstop or right fielder?

I think all in all this might be the best deal Alderson has made. Herrera is a player and Black has already shown his worth.

Does anyone know if a September call up starts the arbitration clock for a player?  Bring him up.  I just can't watch Murphy play soccer at second anymore.

wow a 20 year old prospect and a position player. Imagine that. Now how do we screw this up? yeah resign Murph for 5yr/65mil

Herrera sounds like he is doing good in the minors. Tell us what he does when he gets to AAA when it matters most. If he is a good as the scouts say then put him on the fast track to AAA and maybe some exposure playing on the Mets.

@pologround Might as well just release them, you will get nothing in a trade.

@Eric Iverson I am sure that a playoff team would take Murph.......He is a better 2b than i thought, but he will never be a good fielder......Avg at best....

@ponzies86 I agree but why not try to trade DW instead. You can always move Murphy to 3rd base.

semperfi

Crazy no, 100% accurate yes! Murphy makes a great DH and utility guy playing 1B,2B and 3B but since Wright will never be moved and Duda provides the power we need at 1B, it would be a complete overpay to sign him long term to play subpar D in an up the middle spot, Herrera barring injury will be an all star in the MLB, extra base hit machine with high average, speed and solid D at very little $, no way you justify Murphy and a $50 million+ contract while holding back Herrera. Thank him for his service and get as much as you can for him, at the end of the day your running a business, it's not personal.

@Nicholas Vargas no, Herrera will be the starting @B when the Mets win their next WS. Murphy gets traded this winter. Should have already happened.

@tw22 I am no Alderson fan, but Wheeler?  Or Thor and dArnaud?  Can't discount those trades.  Now Alderson and company can't draft worth a lick.

@hashburry Worst 2B I've seen. Watching him close up on Wed was a horrifying experience. Pony League players make all 4 plays he screwed up. and I'm dead serious.

@MetsFan1962  He's 20 years old and already in AA.  That's about as fast tracked as it gets.  He'll be in AAA next year.

And I'm not sure I agree AAA matters most.  A to AA is the real test.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@MetsFan1962 AAA is easier to hit than AA atm, Ask Thor. Especially with us in the PCL. I really hope we can leave Vegas in the next few years to actually get a fair reading on our hitters and pitchers.

@pologround  Can you say Jeff Kent... who went on to be a star... on a poorly hitting team that had great pitching and great defense, and good overall hitting... He holds his own..Kent did too. Our issue is we have a so so short stop... who can't hit...no clutch hitting throughout the lineup...and can't score more than three runs with him in the lineup... I watched Seaver lose so many games with the Mets because they were an all pitch/defense type team for years.. And, average at best...even though each of their starters for years had era's around 3 and most pitched complete games.. I have always wondered how many games Seaver would have won as a Met if he had a Murph and a Wright in the lineup...(the verdict is still out with Duda but I am hoping this is not a fluke year aka Davis)...Murph's hitting is not a fluke and he is right in his prime... Dilson better be the next Jose Reyes hitting wise at second if they trade him.  And, that puts a lot of pressure on a young 20 year old if they do.. If they wind up trading Murph.. I am hoping he is..but that's a big risk to take at a position that is not a need right now. (Also depends on who they could get in a trade for him)... The Mets defense is pretty good right now... Another no hit (average/clutch) great fielder is not what this team needs at 2nd next year, especially if we are stuck with Tejada at SS again.

Haig Mathosian
Haig Mathosian

I'm sure he'd gladly waive the no-trade clause, just to escape.

George Brezny

@hashburry @tw22  Your right but he had the chance to turn this in to a winning team with the right signings this year, and so far he failed... Wrong manager at the helm to and has already said TC is safe for next year.. I think they are both good at seeing talent/developing it..but that doesn't translate to being great leaders to help motivate a team.. I know I know..no money but I think that's just smoke and mirrors now.. They just don't want to pay for the top talent... And, less face it..Most of the players want more to play in NY..cost of doing business.. Why we ended up with CY and Grandy this year..and over paid them too.

zoddie

@jamets @MetsFan1962  He has been fast tracked more than almost any Mets farmhand in years.  When he was promoted, he was the youngest player in the league in AA.  Now he's the second youngest.  Doesn't get much faster than that for a prospect unless you're Mike Trout.

hashburry
hashburry

@dannym28 @hashburry @tw22 Nimmo is ok.  Smith not exactly tearing it up, and there are very few first base prospects because the truly solid ones play other positions and get moved to first when they can't cut it at third or in the OF.  He was one of the only first basemen drafted anywhere near the top of the draft over the last number of years.  Conforto should move fast, acceding to Ojeda who was doing the Cyclones game last night. We shall see.

Albert E Lewis
Albert E Lewis

@Nicholas Vargas  Even when Cecchini was drafted by the Mets scouts said hes not an elite prospect..and that he was drafted for his baseball ''instincts''...LOL the OF drafted after him Courtney Hawkins has a 18 hr 81 rbi season so far.
