Jenrry Mejia fires a change

Mejia says arm is getting tired

Jenrry Mejia told the coaching staff that his arm is getting a little tired, Terry Collins said before Tuesday’s game.

Collins said he would likely not use Mejia on Tuesday due to him pitching in two long outings recently.

Mejia allowed one earned run on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings on Monday night. He needed 26 pitches to get through his assignment. Mejia needed 14 pitches to get through his inning on Sunday, and another 18 to throw his 1 1/3 innings on Friday.

Collins said that even though Mejia previously started, he’s concerned about overusing the pitcher and asking him to get ready too often.

Oh God. That all Collins has to hear. We won't see Jenrry until September.

He's got a young arm who up untill this season has been a SP. but because of injuries , has been forced into the closers role and Terry has over used him.

Not every pitcher has an arm like Torres Terry.

What a pansy. The former generations of ball players were men. So many of these guys are babies. I know babies that complain less.

Mejia is clearly talented and capable but he does not have a closer's stuff or mentality. Maybe it will come with time but for 2015 I see him, Familia and Parnell vying for the role unless they bring in a veteran at a reasonable price. Look, at least we have options. And if Mejia isn't the choice, he can be a very good 7th and/or 8th inning setup reliever in the mold of Frasella, McDowell, or Wendell.

tired? If he is from mismanaging him for warming him up too much, then Collins and Warthen need to be accountable

Tired! Really you pitch 5 innings a week!!!! If you didn't go to full counts so much you wouldn't be so tired.

Jenry that's what they make STEROiDS for…Duh?

Jenrry does not have the closer's mentality, if his arm is tired already.  Shame.

Terry Collins will run ANY bullpen into the ground. He does not know how to manage a pen well at all, and this, among other reasons, is why they need to dump Terry.

Its nice that TC realizes that Meija's arm is getting tired after Meija told him. Closers usually pitch one inning, but not TC's closers. Push them to the end and then throw them away.

Next year the Yankees will pay millions for you and when you go on the DL they will say it is the Mets fault. Go with it.

I know what the Mets could do put Mejia on the DL. That's the answer for all the Mets problem.

Aaron Heilman deja vu....After watching that dreadful episode 7/8 years ago, my feeling is if Mejia doesn't want to close, find another closer.  Black, Familia...even Torres.  Torres probably has the proper makeup out of all, to do the job.  But Mejia is added to the list of possible trade pieces..

guess he wants to be a starter

This is how things are supposed to work.  Mejia did the right thing speaking up.  Too many relievers I think feel obligated to just pitch until their arm falls off.

TC is the worst manager in handling of his bullpen & bench in the last 30 years!!!!!!

This guy has pitched 12 innings in the past month. Maybe we need to find a closer who is a little more durable.

Give mejia a couple days  rest

I'm not against getting a savvy veteran presence in the bullpen--just as long as we have seen the last of Kyle Farnsworth and Jose Valverde. Mejia is still adapting to the closer role. Might be a good idea to give him a knock every few days and go with Black or even Edgin, who has been very sharp (last night notwithstanding). And start to reconsider the 4-out save. Mejia AND Familia have been getting hid fairly hard of late. Also time to cut bait on Germen.

But of course he is getting tired. He is getting over used by TC.

They desperately need a veteran arm to steady the back of that pen.  Losing Hawkins was tough (and I'm not necessarily advocating that they should have resigned him).

Collins concerned then uses him Sunday in a non-save situation and yesterday to get 4 outs. That's our genius manager for you. Says one thing does another.

@D If Terry Collins showed up at your door in a tux and handing you a million dollars cash, you'd find a reason to criticize him.

Tell me it 'int true?

He's a good pitcher but clearly cannot handle the work. And he hasn't pitched much. 25 innings over two months? We need a closer we can count on to pitch.

@Matt Drucker Well they are trying to win baseball games aren't they? And when they don't win guys like you are criticizing them and asking why they didn't use their closer. I swear, does every f...ing move need to be criticized by someone? Nattering nabobs of negativisim. Congrats Matt you've just joined the club.

@theglider Yeah, especially with pitchers, the Mets have a tendency to try and force square pegs in round holes.  The bullpen needed some shoring up.  Ok, they've done that.  Now, lets not injure Mejia OR lose him mentally.  Replace him at closer, move him to long relief in the meantime and figure out what he is.

Matt Drucker
Matt Drucker

I didn't say not to use him. He shouldn't though be concerned and then use him everyday. It's known he had arm troubles before. That's part of the reason why he wanted to be a starter in the first place.

@Eric Hack @Matt Drucker Terry is frightened for his job. If this season goes worse than it is now he will be jettisoned to keep the heat off Sandy and the Wilpons.

Thank you for the intelligent contribution to the discussion. So far we've had "Terry's just an idiot" and "stfu". Please share some more pearls of your wisdom. We eagerly await them.

@Matt Drucker Oh, so TC has used Mejia every day has he? Mets have played 89 games. Mejia has started 7 and appeared in 24 as a reliever. That's 24 appearances out of a total of roughly 54 games that he could possibly have appeared in as a reliever. A total of 62 IP. Not exactly every day is it? At least if you're going to criticize come close to having some facts to back up your criticism. But like most posters on this blog you're just spewing crap.
