Jenrry Mejia warms up 1

Mejia named fifth starter; Brown, Quintanilla, Germen make team

Jenrry Mejia has been named the Mets fifth starter, after Daisuke Matsuzaka was optioned to the minors on Saturday afternoon, Sandy Alderson confirmed.

Mejia, who suffered a right arm contusion on Friday night, will see doctors in New York on Monday.

Gonzalez Germen, Andrew Brown and Omar Quintanilla were confirmed for the team’s Opening Day roster, Alderson said. Brown and Quintanilla will join Lucas Duda or Ike Davis, Anthony Recker, Josh Satin and Eric Young Jr. or Juan Lagares on the team’s bench.

Kyle Farnsworth is heading to Triple-A Las Vegas, the team said.

They better do something about the bullpen or they can kiss 90 wins goodbye

I saw basically my exact thoughts. Mejia should be down for a month and Dice-K start. I think he could really impress and we could get an awesome trade just barely into the season. What if Dice-K continues well and tejada struggles? I think seattle would take him as the major part in a Franllin deal. Then we would have mejia come up and soon Synnder and what looks like is going to be a very productive SS. I would really think we'd have a legit shot then. But if Dice-K does it in the minors, I dont think he will net us a Franklin type quality trade. We are close to having a decent chance. Using our deep SP to fill our weak spots would put us there and maybe one of those arms being a lights out bullpen arm instead of SP like the Cardinals did and like the METS said they were going to imitate.... Dice-K could have been the trade bait that closed a hole but if he does it in the minors, I dont think we get the exceptional trade. I believe we may have shot ourselves in the foot with this move. Maybe fate will step in and force dice-k into the rotation and it will still happen...... and we can get the extra year of mejia. Bad move so far. Bad move. Really unexplainable

Someone please explain something to me.  I thought by keeping Mejia in the Minors for 1 month would've kept him from arbitration for another year.  With Dice K looking pretty good, wouldn't that have made a world of difference by keeping Mejia another year.  It would've meant only 4 starts from Dice k.  And if he would've looked just as good, he would've been excellent trade bait, and Mejia would've then been called up.  Did I miss something ?  Please explain.

Obviously Mets are taking advantage of 100 K minor league option to use -Dice will pitch next week

I am happy the Mets did not sign Drew, too much money for what you get.  I would love to know what Seattle was/is asking for Franklin.  Without that info I can't fault SA for not doing a deal.  Now I can only hope Flores can actually play the position well enough at the major league level learn to do it quickly in the minors.

If Brown and Quintanilla are both on the 25-man roster, then we have 12 pitchers and a 6 man bench.  Who isn't making this team?  Ike or Duda?  Lagares (that would be horrible)?

My gut still tells me we should never have signed Colon and that not only should Mejia be in the rotation but so should Montero. Eh if anything, it dont hurt to have all this depth.

Keep Quintinilla with the club is not the right thing. That's tejadas fall back and it will happen. So get used to another year with Q at short.

If Dice-K lights up the minors like we think he will, he'll get signed and traded.

Bullpen scares me the most on this team. I like out OF. I think the elite defense if 3 CF will play well at Citi. 1B does worry me but I'm just hoping the ongoing competition for PT pushes 1 of Duda or Davis to start producing (otherwise please push both out of town) SS is a black hole plain and simple. Sub par defense and a good hitting pitchers numbers at the plate BUT a team can contend for a WC w 1 hole in the lineup (yes if 1B produces) especially with our strength of SP. Love the staff and we have almost an entire rotation right behind it at AAA. BUT I see our starters taking a lot of 3-1 2-1 1-0 4-2 leads into the 6th 7th 8th and the pen blowing it:

Parnell - off surgery - 1 good year

Valverde - lost confidence last year and getting up in years

Rice - overused last year - burnout candidate

Familia - like him a lot but young and not really pressure tested yet

Lannan - I worry he can't make the transition to the pen, not like he was a phenomenal starter anyway

German - nice spring - he's the last guy up anyway

Torres - unimpressive

The way this team is constructed more should have been invested in shutting down the leads our SP provide us with and the few runs our offense pushes across. Prepare for a lot of stressful - disappointing - "why did I stay up and watch this game" blown leads.

Hope I'm wrong - LGM

Well, Mejia, here it is. Your time to shine. Don't let us down.

Alderson should just pony up and sign Drew already.  It's not like he's asking for that much.  He's a very similar player to Jhonny Peralta, who recieved double the amount that Drew is asking for.  We need the leadoff hitter, but more importantly we need better shortstop defense.

I'm still kind of amazed that so much money came off the books this offseason, yet all they did was replace last year's production.  There was no additional spending.  Wilpon is still broke.  Sure, they might win a few extra games this year thanks to the presence of Syndergaard and Montero, yet it still boggles the mind as to why they aren't spending.  It's as if Alderson doesn't realize that spending on the team will create a better team, which in turn will draw more fans.  The payroll is 22nd in baseball.  Last year they were 19th.  Relative to the rest of baseball the Mets are decreasing their spending at a rapid pace, even if the overall salary figure is remaining constant.

Alderson has said 90 wins is a goal.  How is that possible with the talent this team has?  Go out and sign Stephen Drew to a 2 or 3 year deal, trade Flores for some real value, and trade either Duda or Davis.  It's really not that complicated.

The crappy team is now complete. This was the year we were told was THE year things would come together.

Fans also need to remember Granderson strikes out a TON and will he be able to pull the ball into the Pepsi Porch???

at what point do we need to recognize Tejada is not an MLB ShortStop ?

How does Germen make the team with how awful he was in Spring Training?

@Mike Daly  This must be sarcasim.  EY is a nice player but he isn't any where near Reyes.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@Mike Daly He has nothing of Reyes outside of he can steal bases. He isn't as good as Reyes defensively, he doesn't have Reyes' xbh capability and he isn't as fast a Reyes. Oh and he can't hit for a high average either and outside of bunting he doesn't do anything with the bat left-handed. And he isn't that young either. EY is a wasted roster space unless he can get his obp over .340 at least and he won't start over Lagares imo. I feel it's more likely that CY struggles and they work EY in there.

Franklin was sent to the minors yesterday. He can't be that expensive. The real question is How good is he.

crafalko17

Look at what Colon did last year. If he even comes close to that it is a hell of a bargain, and if he does maybe we can pull a Dickey with him =O. What his presence creates is an expendable spot for Niese/Gee for trades which could be big in getting us something substantial in a trade. Gives us options which I like. If Colon was younger he would've gotten a 100+ mil deal. All for it.

@Noah Baron  Did you ever stop and think that maybe it's not about the cash? Maybw it's the fact that Drew sucks and will be on the DL by the end of May? OR the fact theres an all-star team of SS out there next offseason headlined by Hanley that he's saving money for? Were not winning anything this year anyway with or without Drew and his 80 year old man knees. If anything he gets us 2 more wins

lynez
lynez

Really a leadoff hitter. Plz know your stats before you speak. He hit like 250 N had less then 20 maybe even 15 steals. And you said leadoff? we can get that type of production in average n way more production in steals from ey n hes not asking for 10 million a year. Plz sit down n reevaluate your life before you speak about what the mets should do again.

@Noah Baron  I agree with you on the Mets spending. Keeping the payroll in line basically drops the Mets down in payroll spending due to increasing costs of living.

I don't want Drew. he is not comporable to Peralta. Why do you think no team has signed him? I predict he will eventually sign a one year deal for around 7-8mm.

vimets

How high should the Mets payroll be?

coldfreeze

seriously, but they send Vic Black down.  I am pretty sure German had the worse spring.  I am not confident in him at all.  Now, I don't mind sending Black down, but German needs to go also.  We have prospects that deserve a chance and I would even trust Farnsworth more and would love his veteran presence.

Olerud42

@Bob Giacalone  In fairness, Harvey pitching a full year, instead of none of the year, was a significant part of that plan. We'd probably still be at best a marginal contender, but we'd be closer than we are now.

@Bob Giacalone  yes Bob the year where aLL THE MONEY came off the books and we would spend !!!!

We already recognize it.  Well all of us except ownership and management... Are we missing something?

I'm sure it was a tossup. If you look at the stats, although German had a higher ERA, Black gave up more walks and was lit up to a .333 BA against. High ERA can also be attributed to poor spring training defense.

The guys he was competing against were worse.

@Ed Renner @k1200sHe got sent to the minors because their top position prospect is a SS and they signed Cano. Kid is still a top 100 prospect in baseball and won't be that cheap. He's ranked higher than Montero.

Olerud42

@vimets  I personally think it's a mistake to argue for a particular number. The real question should be, given the assets that are available at the costs they come with, what allocation of money makes the most sense?  And sometimes holding is the right strategy.

Now, in this case, I think if you can sign Drew for less than 4 years and less than, say $13mil per year, you do it. If he's going to cost significantly more than that, you hold.

But I think the silly approach would be to say, "The Mets MUST commit a certain number of dollars this year" just to sign expensive garbage. That doesn't make any sense to me.

Vic Scarpelli

He will go down , matter if time till black is back . Also farnsworth will get a shot

@coldfreeze  German was good last year, and spring training doesn't mean much. I assume that's the rationale.

Bob Giacalone
Bob Giacalone

@Bob GiacaloneThere's really no way for this to be fixed UNLESS more fans stop showing up for the games. The Wilpons need to be forced into selling or spending. Get it down to 5000 a game and you'll see changes. One can only hope they are 25 games out in June...and that fans stay away.

Olerud42
Olerud42

@1harris1  And he was good last year, which is more important than meaningless spring training stats

I don't like Drew at any price. practically any option next year will be better than Drew.

It is possible to win with solely prospects and not spending money but the thing lacking in impatient fans is time.

@Bob Giacalone  "here's really no way for this to be fixed UNLESS more fans stop showing up for the games. The Wilpons need to be forced into selling or spending. "

Never going to happen.  Not to the extent that it would force the Wilpons to sell. At least, I highly doubt it. Too many die hard fans that love baseball even in the lean years.

This only gets fixed with the Wilpons still here.
