Mejia has forearm bruise, X-rays negative

Jenrry Mejia was hit by a batted ball on Friday night against the Blue Jays. He was removed from the game with a forearm contusion, the team said.

Mar. 29: X-rays taken Friday night on Mejia’s bruised right forearm came back negative, but the Mets have not said if he’ll be available to start April 4 against the Reds.

In the event Mejia does not make the team or is unable to pitch, Daisuke Matsuzaka will likely get the start >> Read more from earlier today on MetsBlog.

Mar. 28: He will receive X-rays after the game, the Mets announced. They expect to know more on Saturday (Ehalt, March 28).

Mejia is in the running for the fifth starter slot with Daisuke Matsuzaka, who pitches for the Mets on Saturday. Terry Collins mentioned John Lannan as a pitcher who could step in if both Mejia and Jon Niese are unable to pitch.

I suspect they're going to keep both Mejia and Dice K in the majors for the start of the season. What's the point of rushing Niese back for a start on April 6? Given that he hasn't pitched much this spring, and given his injury history, the team should give Niese more time to make sure he's truly ready when he's activated.

Rubin just tweeted Dice K has been demoted to AAA Vegas

@happyhank86 Last night was just bad luck, delivery looked much more under control before that, though he was missing his spots.

Watching the game I doubt he's hurt. It's exhibition so no risk just take honour like they did

It looked precautionary and Mejia has pitched well and deserves the 5, if he can stay on the field

On a positive note he pitched well up the the point the come backer occurred, besides the HR to Jose Bautista.

A comebacker to any of the Mets pitchers will no doubt turn into something significant.  It's like walking on damn egg shells with this team.

They just announced that they're sending DiceK to AAA and Mejia made the team. But I wouldn't be surprised if we see him back sometime soon.

@Steven Matregrano he has injury issues, you have a much bigger problem. Good Luck. It was his pitching arm so he will probably miss some time

Steven: Here is the reason: all things being equal it makes MUCH more sense to play Mejia because he is young and part of our future. Dice K is a retread. It's about developing Mejia and building the dominant starting rotation we need. You always bet on young guys under team control. Not old guys making one last push.
