Meet the Mets TV and radio teams

4:15 pm: Seth Everett will be WOR’s pre- and post-game host before radio broadcasts of Mets games, the team announced Friday.

9:45 am: Everett, who currently hosts a FOX Sports Radio Saturday morning show, will join Howie Rose and Josh Lewin, who will return as the on-air broadcast team during games.

Eddie Coleman will continue in his role as WFAN’s Mets beat reporter, filing on air reports and updates and doing fill-in hosting throughout the year.

SNY recently announced that Gary Apple will replace Chris Carlin as host of their pre- and post-game show. Bob Ojeda will return as the show’s studio analyst. Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling will again be in the booth. Carlin will continue hosting SNY’s Loud Mouths and will host GEICO SportsNite.

This is the final year of Kevin Burkhardt’s current contract with SNY. FOX recently announced he will host a new pre- and post-game studio show, based in Los Angeles, for their National baseball programming. Steve Gelbs will start the season as Burkhardt’s fill-in.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

This is a good choice by WOR. I have known Seth for years. He’s underrated, very smart, he loves baseball and he’ll make a nice addition to the team. He’s been very critical of the team’s ownership during the last few years, so I’m interested to see how he injects his direct style in to these broadcasts. He speaks clearly and doesn’t mince words. It’s a trait I admire and something I look forward to being around again. I first met him years ago when I interned at MLB Radio, often working for him and Darryl Hamilton. I miss that show, actually. They were fun together.

For what it’s worth, WOR interviewed and strongly considered some very close friends of mine for this position, talking right down to the final decision. You’ve seen these people do good work here on MetsBlog and SNY.tv. They’re all equally qualified and passionate. I hope they continue hustling to find the job of their dreams. They’ve all earned it and will get there sooner than later, I’m sure… Don’t give up, guys!

Speaking of talent, we are so fortunate as Mets fans. In addition to an incredible cast of on air talent, all of whom make these games far more entertaining than they often are, the city is also home to an incredible corps of beat reporters and columnists. I often take issue with their abundance of meaningless information, but that actually speaks to their hustle and commitment to the job. These men and women produce almost as much material as the rest of the National League beats combined and, though they are easy targets when snippy with fans, they do great work that is often taken for granted.

In other words, the media surrounding the Mets is amazing, especially when you consider how weak the team has been over the last few years. The radio guys, TV crew, producers, directors, talent, engineers, writers, columnists, reporters, editors, the dozens and dozens of bloggers, “new media” people, podcasters, fans on Twitter, Facebook and comment sections, they combine to be an an incredible — and often unbelievable — number of talented and entertaining people focusing on a single team’s every move. This is not common. It’s special. And we probably should appreciate it more than we do…

The fact that the Mets would broadcast on the same station that spews out all this right wing garbage makes me angry and ashamed to be a fan. It is a horrible move by the Mets.

OR you could bat den Dekker anywhere.  He leads the whole team in RBIs doesn't he??

I just hope that Andy Martino doesn't fill in for Burkhardt this season at all.

WOR sucks, I tried to listen to the game and instead I got Limbaugh. What a waste. I can only believe they will blackout regular season games as well.

No Spring Training games on WOR! Way to get your fans excited for the upcoming season. Brilliant marketing technique.

Carlin won't be missed.  Talk about a guy who has next to no business working in his field.

It's bad enough having to watch the Mets lose without having to look at Chris Carlin immediately afterward.   Very happy about this change, can you tell?

Gary, Keith and Ron have been the best announcers of our era, I believe. Ron has won awards for his work. Gary with his over analysis of everything, it grew on me. And Keith almost stumbling over a lot of what he says, it's hilarious. I remem in the early days he always funked up something he said, he still does, but not nearly as much. I like KB too. After these guys come Kiner and McCarver, I grew up on those two on WWOR tv ch. 9 of course. Fran Heeley and Howie Rose were also good. But the worst has to go to Seaver. As great as he was for out history, he was as equally bad as a broadcaster. I couldn't stand him and his continuous talks of his wine vineyards in Marthas Vineyard crap any longer, ha anyone remember that, lol. Loved the franchise, but certainly not for that. Hopefully the "coupons" and SNY can lock up Gary, Keith and Ron for many years to come.

Wor reach and budget is to radio what the Mets are to baseball, second rate.

I really like Jim Duquette.  Offers great insight and sounds very down to earth.

Regarding the Reyes to Yankees poll that Metsblog won't let us comment on, if that ever happened, I hope the Wilpons drive off a cliff.

Can't wait for Burkhardt to be gone... counting the days.

Frankly I have to say that I pretty happy with Gary Apple replacing Carlin. Nothing against him, but Apple seems to be the better fit. I've been saying that for years. I'll miss Eddie too.

Hope the broadcast team wears the Kiner patch on their shirts.

I just wish that WOR had the range of WFAN. In my area in NJ you barely get a signal. Not choosing a station that could at least satisfy the tri-state and CT is further evidence of owners not being on the side of the fan.

As I have been stuck at home for two weeks with broken ribs...damned black ice...unable to do much of anything but read, I can wholeheartedly concur with your post Matt! We indeed are blessed with an incredible number of talented people who write about the Mets!!

Every morning I wake up and think how fortunate I am to be a Mets fan because of the talent Matt has cited.  Then I look at the standings and remember that I'm a Mets fan and an alcoholic.  So fortunate.

Too bad we don't have a talented team.

Stinks about Kevin B., but he was so talented as a broadcaster that it was only going to be a matter of time before someone else - in this case Fox - scooped him up and offered him a big time gig (since Gary, Keith, and Ron are going nowhere, thank goodness).

I don't really care about the radio crew at all, though I like them - sorry Howie (always liked him but found him a little annoying) and Josh.

I don't know if he has been interviewed, but I think Toby Hyde could be an outstanding broadcaster for the Mets in the future. Besides having the voice and sense of humor, he has the knowledge and passion that closest resembles that of Gary Cohen. Plus the Mostly Mets Podcast is outstanding. Rob Brender is outstanding too.

ugh. seth everett is a pompous, condescending clown who knows little-to-nothing about baseball. the mets radio broadcast is really taking a hit with this move to WOR. it's too bad. thank god for gary, keith & ron on tv. it really is shocking that seth everett makes a living talking about major league baseball. get worse, WOR, get worse!

Its a shame such a great broadcast team will have to call another 3rd or 4th place finish.

Kevin B will be missed. He did a nice job on a few NFL games this past season. Good luck to him.

Just don't turn on WOR a second before or after the Mets programming or you are in Neo-con-hate-radio heaven.  Unless you like that kind of thing.  I for one do not…scary stuff

Two things: Gary Apple is one of the most annoying announcers in the history of sports tv. His delivery and overemphasis of selected words during reporting make me turn off the station a few seconds into broadcast anytime he appears. So, not too happy about his appointment as the pre and post anchor.

Secondly, is it just me, or does it seem to anyone else that the Mets are just one of the teams SNY covers? Some days the Mets are the 2nd or 3rd story at the start of the show. In comparison, if you tune into YES, you know that it is the Yankees network and, oh yeah, we'll cover some of the other teams when we're done covering everything Yankees.

Last thing, Burkhardt will be missed by this fan -- he seems to be the most accessible announcer the mets have ever had... well spoken, too.

mikechuk21
mikechuk21

@Muhammad Qureshi  They don't have a choice -- MLB mandates that games be blacked out, all the better to make you buy At Bat or Gameday Audio.

mikechuk21
mikechuk21

@Jimmy  Jimmy, WOR has broadcast about six games already. You can only listen to them on the actual radio, per MLB rules.

mikechuk21
mikechuk21

@Muhammad Qureshi  Never liked Seaver as announcer -- he seemed to vacillate between playing up his team icon status and lamenting that today's players didn't headhunt like they did back in his day. He was actually easier to take doing Yankees games, as he was too busy playing Rizzuto's foil to get wrapped up in all that stuff.

I have used MLB at Bat for the last fews years on my PC, IPad and IPhone. It is the best $20 I spend all year for when I am out of radio range. Highly recommend it, especially now with WOR's lousy sound quality and range.

@Muhammad Qureshi  Kevin is a terrible announcer -- he speaks to fast and stumbles over his words. Can't wait for him to be gone...

@Bob Burket  We get one more season with him. But yes, he'll be missed. He could be someone's play by play guy next year although I assume it'll be something to do with FOX since that's his main employer now.

@Balonius I think SNY has a different business model than YES. YES exists to validate feelings of superiority of obnoxious and entitled Yankee fans, I mean, promote the Yankee brand. I would never speak ill of our rivals. SNY, on the other hand, like other Concast-owned or part owned "SportsNet" station across the country, tries to cover all local sports and make its nightly news/clips show the go to place for local sports news and highlight rather than Sportcenter or the late local news.

As for Burhardt, I like his reporting and what he has to say. but I don't want to hear it during the game. I realize that this is how sports are covered now. Play-by-play and color commentary in the booth and someone in the stands, the dugout, or the sideline talking about his or her reporting: conversations with players, coaches, etc; news reports about the team or the opponents; minor league news. That belongs on the pre- and post-game shows, and is often repeated from it. I realize that most folks don't watch the pre-game show, and this is their only opportunity to hear this--it is better than Mets.com online news--but, during the games, I want to hear about the game from Gary. Keith, and Ron. But, it seems that this is just me.

Muhammad Qureshi

Ha ha, funny. What am I supposed to learn listening to limbaugh, with his pig-headedness, single minded views. Nah bra, u can solely keep that and let him fill your head with garbage, along with everything else WOR has to offer. All I want is the Mets from that station.
