“It has an impact, there is no question about that,” Sandy Alderson said of Matt Harvey‘s injury, on WFAN. “But, it’s not as significant as some people have said, at least in terms of our planning.”
Alderson indicated that changes to “The Plan” will have to be made, including adding veteran starting pitching.
“We’ve got some money to spend, I wasn’t planning on spending it on starting pitching because of the depth that we have, but given the fact that we may have lost our number one guy means we’re gonna have to look for an additional veteran presence in the rotation,” the GM said. “We have to accept it, absorb it and try to move on to be better.”
He sees Harvey, Dillon Gee, Zack Wheeler and Jon Niese as being in his 2014 rotation, depending on what happens with Harvey’s elbow.
Minor league starters Rafeal Montero and Jacob deGrom are pitchers who are close to being promoted, with Noah Syndergaard “not too far away,” Alderson said.
In regards to trading pitching for hitting, he said, “It’s hard to do that.”
