Matt Harvey will rehab in New York… and PSL

The Mets have told Matt Harvey he can do his rehab from Tommy John surgery in New York during the season, according to a source (Rubin (ESPN) Mar. 24).

He will transition to Port St. Lucie when he gets close to facing live hitters.

Harvey has been on record this spring repeatedly saying he would like to do his rehab with the big-league team, which is his right, according to league rules. However, according to multiple reports, Sandy Alderson wanted Harvey to rehab in St. Lucie away from the team and media.

“For me, I strongly felt that my best opportunity, and my motivation to come back quicker, stronger, work harder would be to be with the teammates,” Harvey told New York Daily News columnist Andy Martino (Daily News, Mar. 18). “I have worked so hard to get to the point where I was, and all of a sudden I get hurt, and it’s ‘you’ve got to stay in Florida, you’ve got to disappear from New York, you’ve got to do this.’ I took pride in living in New York, and being a New Yorker.  I live there all year round.  It’s a place I love being.”

Harvey and Jeremy Hefner, who is also recovering from the same surgery, threw from flat ground at 75 feet Monday.

This has absolutely zero to do with his actual rehab.

Harvey wants to stay at his apartment in NYC and continue to live his life, date hot chicks, and go out at night.   Which incidentally involves going out and showing up in Page Six.

Alderson wants him to be a non-story this season.   Hence... "stay in Florida, don't be an off the field distraction".

We'll see how much comradery played into this when he is at every Rangers home playoff game. He wants the attention & the news. The Mets dropped the ball here by showing him that he is no different than anyone else on this team & that the ego & big head need to be put in check. $100 million players rehabbed in PSL. Why is he too good for it? An overinflated ego is a dangerous thing.

It's pretty silly for the Mets to make an issue of this.

Now if Harvey wants to pitch in September, No. Just continue your rehab and be in FLA in February

You can tell by Harvey's words he plans on playing in New York for the rest of his career. Unfortunately for us, he despises the Mets more than he loves the Yanks.

What about Hefner? Where's he doing his rehab?

So if Hefner wants to hang with team too...? Just let's hope Matt's arm gets just as healthy as his ego and his stance does not piss off the veterans. Notice how David has been quiet on the subject?

Good!

I could never understand why the players are banished to Siberia when they have a major injury. Why they can't rehab with their team seems silly.

It's not league rules ... it's the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players and the league that allows the player to choose a rehab location. Good clause. Harvey traveling with the team will also be a big plus.

I would have told him he can rehab with the team when they're at home and go down to PSL when the team is on the road. Hell, that way he gets what he wants and he's under better supervision at PSL when the team isn't at Citi.

@Kevin Joseph Patrick This was a great comment. Some naive Met fans seem to think he genuinely wants to rehab in NY to be with the team. Anyone who paid attention last year knows thats not the case. Wright would rehab in PSL if told to. That's all anyone needs to understand. "24+1" is back.

@neugie24 You're right. Unfortunately, as talented as that arm is, it'll never be as big as the ego.

@neugie24  david responds to questions he's asked, he is never offering up opinions, and i've yet to hear him asked about this situation
