Matt Harvey wants to pitch in 2014

Matt Harvey‘s goal is to pitch for the Mets this September, despite being months away from throwing a baseball.

Harvey had Tommy John surgery in October. The Mets have repeatedly said they do not expect him to pitch in 2014.

“When you see stories of guys coming back in 10 months, I’m going to think, ‘Hey, I can come back in nine,” he said Thursday while being honored as the New England Player of the Year by the Boston chapter of the BBWAA (MLB.com, Jan. 23). “Obviously, I don’t make those decisions. I can only prepare to the best of my ability and make sure I’m in good strength and flexibility, and when they do let me go, I’m good to go.”

Harvey told reporters he has yet to have any sort of setback, and, “I’m itching to get back out and pick up a baseball again.”

Shelly, our family is with you. The "crack doctors" on the medical staff should be immediately dismissed--and then sued for medical malpractice.

and I want to be 5'4" and 140 pounds! NONONONONO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the spirit but the common sense needs a GREAT deal of work! Leave it to the doctors. oh wait. WHAT am I saying? Anyway. Take the whole year. Get strong. See ya in 2015.

Absolutely ridiculous. It takes a year to recover. If he pitches too soon he will do damage. 2015 he will be great big he pushes it, then he (and Met fans ) will pay.

Be awesome if he could, but no hurry. Maybe at end of season, last week or two if he is medically cleared with appropriate strength in elbow and shoulder just.to give us a taste of.what rotation in 2015 will be like (Harvey, Niese, Wheeler, Synndegaard, Gee, Hefner/Torres)

No way Mets are going to let that happen. Management already is writing off the 2014 season so why rush his recovery?

By the time he could possibly pitch the Mets playoff hopes will have been gone for months so forget it.

no don't rush him back. Johan Santana & Jose Reyes kept rushing back & look how they did. he's young & our future. let's wait

I love the fact that so many people would rather have Matt wait out the full 2014 season rather than risk his future. It speaks well of Mets fans to see such true affection for one of their favorite players, as well as the obvious respect for his talent. Bravo!
