Matt Harvey‘s goal is to pitch for the Mets this September, despite being months away from throwing a baseball.
Harvey had Tommy John surgery in October. The Mets have repeatedly said they do not expect him to pitch in 2014.
“When you see stories of guys coming back in 10 months, I’m going to think, ‘Hey, I can come back in nine,” he said Thursday while being honored as the New England Player of the Year by the Boston chapter of the BBWAA (MLB.com, Jan. 23). “Obviously, I don’t make those decisions. I can only prepare to the best of my ability and make sure I’m in good strength and flexibility, and when they do let me go, I’m good to go.”
Harvey told reporters he has yet to have any sort of setback, and, “I’m itching to get back out and pick up a baseball again.”
