Matt Harvey says he’ll throw from mound in July

Mets RHP Matt Harvey says he is a couple weeks away from throwing off a mound for the first time since having Tommy John surgery late last year, he told team beat reporter Adam Rubin (ESPN, June 21).

“I’d say sometime in July would be realistic,” he said.

Harvey told reporters in late May that he expected to be throwing off a mound early last week, but Sandy Alderson put it on hold.

In the meantime, he continues to throw off flat ground.

In addition, Alderson said last week that, although Harvey may wish to make five to seven starts this season, the Mets want him to wait at least 11 months after his Tommy John surgery before he pitches in a game, which is standard protocol and the doctor recommended time frame.

Harvey has said he wants to go in to the off season knowing he’s capable of pitching in a game.

“I think there are other ways that we can provide that kind of peace of mind (for him), whether it’s in instructional league or some other setting,” Alderson said. “So, that’s yet to be determined.”

He could be this generation's Seaver or Gooden (further injury notwithstanding).  Matt, please stay away from the mound at Citi in 2014.  I know it kills a guy with the competitive juices you've got (and maybe a bit of ego) to sit but, pls think long term and keep rehabbing. The only thing you have to gain, besides a setback, is a few more losses. See you in 2015.

I don't see the Mets pushing Harvey

To throw in July. I think the end of August is more less when he will start to throw of the mound.

Jesus, calm down. Everyone heals differently. If he's ready to throw, let him throw. It's not like he's the one making the decisions anyway.

August 1st, 2014, CBS Sportsline - Mets pitcher Matt Harvey injured himself today trying to prematurely throw from the mound and will require Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his quest at a comeback and completely ruining his chances for a 2015 campaign. Mets management was quoted as saying they are still on course for competing in 2015.

... I really don't want to see that

No, Harvey needs to get to throwing now. The Mets are going to need him in the playoffs this year. Hahahahahahahahaha

He is one of the most talented pitchers the Mets have had in a very long time. But I CAN wait to see him pitch beyond the expectations when he is healthy and ready. He doesn't have to be the one to set a protocol for those with TJ surgery as he wishes to do. He doesn't have to be the one to return the fastest. But he does have an ego the size of NY and wants to be sure he is in the papers any chance he gets. Ever notice when another pitcher pitches a great game, he gets himself in the papers? BTW, great game ZW threw the other day!

Pfft, next year??? That's a big dream even if we had Harvey, Seaver and Ryan on the staff...1-0 losses would be the norm.

Nancy I agree, I know they are trying to do what the Giants did in their title run but they had hitters who could drive in runs

It's a relief that Harvey has moved from 'being in the dark' to following standard protocol, meaning that he's catching up to reality. The last thing this organization needs is for Harvey to re-injure himself.

This is part of his rehab, you morons.... he's been throwing off of flat ground already.

Bill Thony - Agree totally about the pitching and babying them. Was great to see Wheeler stay in for a complete game instead of getting pulled by an over cautious manager like Niese and Colon. Niese especially looked like he was really PO when pulled early ....

How is wanting to start throwing from a mound going to hurt him? At least this guy seems like he wants to get on the field and compete. Can't wait for him to come back on the mound! and kick some complancency out of the clubhouse

Well if he's going against their wishes, then he's not the guy I thought he was, I respect his desire and will, but now I strongly question his brain.

I have got to love the aggression. I think it is the over precaution that is the cause of the Tommy John epidemic. Bronson Arroyo has never missed a start. When asked why he is so durable, he said because he pitches all year, and never shuts it down. There has never been more conservatism with pitchers than there is now, also there has never been more injuries. Rather than take the advise of Sandy Alderson, who has proven no success at a major league level, maybe some emulations of the past greats like Nolan, or Seaver should be employed!

Matt? Please please stay put. Next year is "SUPPOSED" to be the year the Mets are expected to contend for anything

Do you really want to commit suicide to your career? Wait till next year. The Mets are going nowhere this year and we will get our 90th win NEXT season.

This guy is the only thing exciting about the Mets. Everything he says and does ,you can tell he is the real deal. Fired up, and ready to win all the time. The rest of the team needs to take notes

@ericccb  Harvey feels like the fans do toward this organization. How long before he holds out and demands a trade to the Yankees?
