Um, that was weird and awkward…
In case you missed it, Matt Harvey did an interview with The Dan Patrick Show today, which was introduced as being part of a promotion for Qualcomm.
This is standard media, with the talent getting time to promote something in return for answering sports related questions. This happens every day, be it here on MetsBlog, on WFAN, or any other place. It’s how it works, it’s pay to play…
Naturally, Patrick asked Harvey about the elbow injury, which Harvey answered by giving the basic what, where and when. He was then asked about delaying the decision to have surgery, but Harvey refused to answer.
Instead, saying, “I’m here talking about Qualcomm, and hopefully I can help them out as much as possible.”
Update – 3:17 p.m.: Harvey apologized on Twitter, saying, “I’ve had a few rough outings on the mound, that was a rough outing on the radio this morning… Been an exhausting couple of days. Apologies to Dan Patrick and Qualcomm.”
Patrick acknowledged Harvey’s role as pitch man, but turned back to baseball, asking him what Tommy John surgery meant to him as a professional baseball player, to which Harvey responded:
“Umm, it’s something everyone knows about, but I did all of those answers yesterday and maybe at the appropriate time we can talk about that. But, today is about Qualcomm.”
Harvey told Patrick he’d be happy to set up another call to talk baseball, but this specific interview would only be about “honoring and supporting Qualcomm,” at which point, Harvey went in to a three-minute monologue about the size and power of the mobile technology company.
Patrick, who seemed incredibly miffed, said thank you and ended the interview, but not before plugging Qualcomm’s initiatives.
“There was nothing that was supposed to be off limits,” the show’s producer told Patrick on air, after Harvey was off the line. “That was extremely disappointing and I don’t know what else he would think we wanted to talk about.”
Harvey is on a media tour, in support of Qualcomm today, including a taped interview for SNY with Bob Ojeda later this afternoon. I can’t wait to see how Ojeda handles things, when Harvey decides to only talk phone technology.
The thing is, I just mentioned Qualcomm six times in a post for the first time ever. Frankly, I forgot this company even existed. So, if that was their goal, while making Harvey look silly, it worked…
