Matt Harvey celebrates TJ surgery, deletes Twitter account

Matt Harvey celebrated the today’s six-month anniversary of his Tommy John surgery by tweeting a photo of himself giving the middle finger and smiling in the hospital bed the day of his surgery.

The photo was later deleted, as was his Twitter account >> Read more at CBS Sports.

5:15 pm: Harvey told reporters the team asked him to remove the picture. He later decided to delete the account because if he can’t show his personality on Twitter he doesn’t see the point in having a Twitter account.

I honestly didn’t think there was anything wrong with it,” Harvey said. “It wasn’t about putting attention on myself. It was a funny picture I saw this morning. I was genuinely excited that six months had passed. My mother took the picture when I was going in to surgery. I guess that was my way of saying I was gonna beat the process. If there is one thing I’m sorry for it’s not being able to play.”

1:55 pm: Harvey was asked by the team to delete his tweet, Mets’ PR man Jay Horwitz said. They did not ask him to delete his account, which was Harvey’s decision (Martino, April 22).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

12:58 pm: Well, that’s disappointing. I like following Harvey on Twitter. This was clearly not the smartest thing to do. But, he’s also 25 years old and confident, and a professional athlete with a bold personality, so, I’m not sure why this has people surprised and up in arms… The way I understand it, Twitter accounts are the personal property of the player. The team has no control over what and when they write. That said, there has reportedly been tension between the Mets and Harvey, as it pertains to communication and dealing with media. I hope his account is just suspended and he soon finds his way back online. Harvey’s awesomeness shouldn’t be relegated to occasional, boring updates from Florida.

It's really disheartening that we have people calling him a diva or immature.  If all he did was take a pic of himself flippin the bird then I may feel differently.  He took it on his hospital bed after he had surgery.  And his caption showed how eager he is to get back on the field. Let's keep this in context.  He didn't go Jack McDowell on anyone.  And yes, he is someone else's employee,  but let's get off our soap box to equate some accountant doing it representing his employer and a freakin' baseball player. We can pretend that it's all the same, but in reality it is not!

There are different rules. If you're a corporate 9-5 er etc. and you screw up too bad. You're out. Athletes, entertainers etc. have different standards in society. Like it or not. good or bad. I don't care how you want to phrase it. That's just the way it is.  And to engulf this picture into this type of conversation is poor judgment by the Mets.  That's my 2 cents.

Remember when "members" of the 86 mets (you know...the whole damn team haha) would "powder" up in the dugout? And yet kids still had their posters and trading cards and everyone was cool?

Yeah? This is harmless lighten up PC Parade.

Eh, so long as Harvey isn't doing anything illegal I don't give a crap what he does. He's a professional baseball player not a priest. And he's a dude about my age, we're much more interested in having fun. Plenty of time to be a grouch when you're 60 years old.

I can see why the mets wouldn't want it up, but at the same time twitter is taken wayyyyy too seriously now a days as it is.

This is harmless stuff. Do you remember our last pitching phenom? Doc Gooden missed the 86 victory parade. Why? He spent all night partying with a bunch of prostitutes and druggies and when he should have been celebrating the world series win with his team he was passed out in a bronx crackhouse. That's a true story. Kind of puts everything in perspective doesn't it?

Harvey's whole routine is growing very old, very quick. Harvey got the taste last year of being the toast of the biggest & greatest city in the world & he misses it. I am pretty sure that he misses being in the spotlight celebrity-wise than he does playing baseball. I am convinced that his desire to rehab in NY, not PSL, had nothing to do with the team; it had to do with Matt Harvey wanting to still remain in the spotlight, in the news, even though he isn't playing. I don't care who he wants to emulate himself after, he has already blown his opportunity to become the next Jeter or the next Wright. David Wright does everything right (no pun intended). He carries himself as a professional on & off the field, and he has since day 1. Did he suffer by not being on the Post's Page Six every week? Not in the least. All Wright has accumulated by carrying himself as a professional is a $100-plus million contract & one of the hottest wives in all of MLB in Molly Beers. Not too shabby; I would change places with him in a heartbeat. Harvey needs to stop the crap & act like a professional.

Love the guys stuff, but he's a "look at me guy". Mejia throws a gem last night and today it's all about Harvey. Best thing he could have done was delete that account. For everyone worrying that he'll end up a Yankee...I bet you are glad they didn't bring him up early now. Having seen Matts personality over the last two years, I won't miss it. Just get healthy big guy.

New York media hyping up absolutely nothing, most of you are falling for it.  What's the big deal?  Most of you do and say much worse in your own lives, it's a middle finger, get over yourselves you overly sensitive pansies.  PS  If your kids on twitter he/she seen much worse.

this relationship just keeps getting strained I hope they fix it or I don't see him staying here when he is a FA. He already is a Yankee fan so it won't take much for him to go there.

Hopefully this is a simple case of a guy with too much free time on his hands and all of this nonsense will stop when he is back to pitching full time.

Some really head scratching opinions expressed here.

a) Making obscene gestures doesn't indicate that someone is "tough", particularly when it's to your mother.

b) All that Jay did is his job, and he did it well.

c) When your employer corrects your behavior, you politely apologize and quietly move on. They sign your checks. You represent them. You make light of it and your errant judgement. You don't stomp your feet and say "it's not fair, I don't want to play anymore". The later isn't a sign of maturity any more than was the decision to post the picture in the first place. He isn't a struggling hero subjugated by an out-of-touch owner, he's a dumb kid who thinks that he can act on every whim without repercussions.Perhaps the fact that his mother took the picture is telling.

d) There is no correlation between being a selfish, self-centered, arrogant, immature @*#*$, and being a "winner". In fact I suspect that vast numbers of "losers" fall into that category.

e) The 80's Mets collective attitude problems weren't responsible for their success. In fact they SHOULD have won a lot more. It's one thing to have an ego, it's another thing to be so insecure that you have to wear it on your sleeve, wave it like a flag, and rub it in people's faces. The more that I've learned about that team over the years, the less I've liked them.

In short, the picture was "cute", and it was almost a good idea to post it. Love the sentiment of his words, love the fact that his Mom took the picture, love that he wants to stay connected to the fans, love that he's counting the days until he can come back. The thing is, a blind agoraphobic monkey should have known that the gesture was simply inappropriate. All he had to do was have someone edit the picture first. There is simply something wrong with his judgement, and it's concerning.

I disagree with Matthew.  I definitely only want some boring updates from Harvey at this point.  The next time I see Harvey, I'd like it to be on a baseball field in spring training 2015, all healed up and amazing, strong - and hopefully matured as a human being.  This look at me garbage stinks IMO.  Sad, too - because, when he's on the mound doing what he was born to do, you can't not look at him.  So, maybe he's acting out because of that and is so bummed at not being able to pitch, that he is being a little weirder than I would personally like.  And hey, this middle finger thing is nothing - don't get the fuss really in 2014.  And a little sorry for getting on Harvey's case earlier on here.  I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.  Must be awful to work your whole life to get to the point he did and then, have to sit it out, just as it is getting going.

I can't believe some of the points I am reading here. This why nobody wants to play here. You could play like garbage and be rewarded with a starting gig no problem. But if you dominate on the field and let you're personality shine through you will be treated like a child. Let Harvey be who he wants, I wish every player on this team had his mentality. He feels he's unstoppable, in todays world??? Let him be... he's not hurting anyone. The Mets should look elsewhere if thy are worried about the impression they give off to people. I think we all know there is a long list. Harvey could've played on this team in '86, nobody else on this squad could've. Say what you want, but those guys were grinders, competitors, winners. Not squeaky clean. I'll take the winner you keep the poster boy

@Jatin A. Shah The Mets have done nothing wrong.  An employee of the Mets posted a profane picture of himself and he's a represenative of the team.  If they ask you to take something down, you do it.  It makes the team more of a laughingstock because an immature 25 year old has too much free time on his hand.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't really care about this.  However, Harvey has shown over and over again that he makes bizarre choices on things.  He was boarderline defiant yesterday saying he did nothing wrong.  The guy is living in another world.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@stage52 I agree.  In the grand scheme of things it's hardly a blip on the radar compared to all the scumbags in sports but it just showed a lack of understanding on how SOME people would be offended.  The stance on the blog owner here is somewhere between surprising in bizarre but I guess he likes it because it gives us something to talk about.

@Bryan McEntee  yeah but he won a world series and had a drug problem. harvey has not won a world series, never won the cy young, is already injured after just 1 full season, and is a dumb jock, self-centered immature bafoon. you get more leeway when you accomplish more. harvey is more interested in headlines and spotlight, gooden had a menatal health issue. where gooden didn't come to the parade due to personal problems, harvey would show up and streak during the David Wright's turn at the mic.

When DWright was Harvey's age he was doing the same stuff but twitter wasn't nearly as visible. And more importantly, who cares? So long as Harvey doesn't pull a doc and get all coked out does it matter what he does?

Chris Tricarico
Chris Tricarico

@Joe WenzelAgreed. Who cares. Let he who has never given the middle finger cast the first stone. I feel like we live in the most conservative country in the world and that everyone gets upset over the most ridiculous thing. It's insane. If you are offended by Matt Harvey's tweet, then I'm offended that you're a fellow Mets fan.  I don't care if he stars in an adult film if it means he's back soon, vying for a Cy Young. Get over it people.

Macacawitz

@eavdr10  It's infantile, yet innocent to have someone take a picture of you giving the finger.  It becomes problematic when you then get the urge to put it out on social media like it's something you're proud of.  Harvey is extremely insecure and has very poor impulse control.  Much of his behavior screams, "Look at Me!".  He's not unstoppable.  No human being is.  If he comes back next year and has lost something off his fastball he'll be stopped, and in a hurry.  Players don't want to play here NOT because they feel inhibited from flashing the bird and then tweeting it out into the ether, but rather because, a) the team stinks; and b) the team is not willing/prepared to pay at a reasonable major league level. Harvey better grow up, this is getting embarrassing.

@Bryan McEntee yea but that stuff so far hasn't affected his performance while what Gooden did wrecked his career. When you consider all of Doc's problems giving your mom the finger in a picture doesn't seem all that bad in comparison. Harvey is a want -a-be bad boy, Doc really was the bad boy

It was a joke. Just because you dont share his sense of humor doesnt make it a problem. If its a problem- what's the negative? Who was hurt by him sticking the picture online? I'm not on Twitter or facebook, all that stuff is about is 'look at me' and I think its a waste of time. But I won't begrudge those who use it and like it and I think I was wrong of the Mets to get involved with this. It wasnt demeaning or disrespectful to anyone and if a photo of some one playfully giving the bird offends you- then you probably shouldn't be using the internet at all.
