Matsuzaka pulled with ‘upset stomach’

Mets starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka was pulled after one inning Sunday in his start against the Padres.

The Mets announced after that Matsuzaka had a “severe upset stomach.”

Manager Terry Collins and a trainer visited Matsuzaka after he got two outs in the first inning, but walked Seth Smith.

Matsuzaka completed the inning before coming out of the game.

Carlos Torres came on in relief.

Shame. But this isn't management's fault. You all know when you get upset stomach, sometimes it comes suddenly. You're walking down the street and the pain starts to hit.. and so on..

Tomorrow they will find out its an oblique injury. Then three weeks into it he will tear a calf and it will be revealed that Dice K never had pain in his stomach but the entire time has been favoring his leg.

He couldn't stomach pitching with that line-up behind him.

how do you start a game not knowing this?  didn't he warm up in the bullpen?  he wasn't sick then?  this is the same thing as Lagares & Mejia.  Collins or Warthen knew the player is not right but they put him in anyway and hope for the best.  Lagares ends up on the dl, Mejia unavailable for at least 2 or more games (lucky to avoid the dl so far) and dice k is pulled 1 ininning into the game.  If you do not fire Collins for 4 years of losing, bad fundementals, bad base running, failure to play and develop young players, then you have to fire him for consistently playing players that he knows are hurt just like he did last year with Wright.

I would have an upset stomach too if I was affiliated in any way with this disaster

That's ok, DiceK - that's how us Mets fans feel watching EVERY game!

There's a lot to get on TC for but this is NOT one of them. I'm sure they knew he wasn't feeling good in warmups...but if he is scratched what do you do? You can't start pitching guys on short rest with zero notice. Going with him as long as you can and going to a long man was the absolute right play.

@iamwilpon DiceK has been a godsend. Love watching a well-mannered veteran go about his business like DiceK does....

@BringBackDaveTelghe the same thing you do when you have to pull him after 1 inning.  you start Torres and get the same four out of him, use Black for the two innings, and you still have Familia & Edgin to get the 7th ininning and possibly the eigth without having to use Mejia 2 innings.  Lucky Dice K did not give up any runs in inning 1 but it was close.  1 big hit by San Diego and the whole game is different because they put a pitcher out there who was not fit enough to pitch.

@BringBackDaveTelghe  Exactly at least they got an inning out of him which is very important when you're going to have to be using your BP the whole game. It's not like they had the ability to call up another SP
