Marlins trade Reyes, Buehrle, JJ, etc. to the Blue Jays

According to FOX Sports, the Marlins will trade Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, John Buck, Emilio Bonifacio, and Josh Johnson to the Blue Jays in exchange for Yunel Escobar, Adeiny Hechavarria, Henderson Alvarez, Justin Nicolino, Jake Marisnick, Jeff Mathis, and Anthony DeSclafani.

Both Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal reported the trade on Twitter.

Updated, 9:13 pm: Wow! So basically, the Marlins have traded every big contract they inked last winter, a lot of which is headed to Toronto. By my estimation, the Marlins have reduced their payroll by about $75-80 million since Opening Day now that everyone of those guys is gone. They loaded up last year, flopped during the regular season, and held yet another fire sale. I’m not shocked this is happening – I thought it might eventually considering nobody in Miami ever gets a no-trade clause – but the speed in which it’s taken place is the surprising part about this. I wonder what Jose is thinking, 11 1/2 months after he signed his mega deal. And, I wonder how playing on the turf at the Rogers Centre will impact his legs. Atleast he might get to grow his dreadlocks back in Toronto after being forced to cut his hair in Miami? Here’s a guy who spent nine years with one team – now he’s on his third team in 14 months. Go figure…

Anyway, as far as the Mets are concerned, I wonder what the implications are in their quest to make improvements of their own. For instance, now that Toronto has acquired two starting pitchers, does it eliminate a potential trade partner? Does it create an opportunity? Brian Erni mentioned an interesting possibility on the MetsBlog Podcast last week of the Mets sending a package around a starter to the Blue Jays for catching prospect Travis D-Arnoud. It’s not to say that was ever a possibility, but the point is it could potentially change an angle for the Mets, be it for someone like D-Arnoud, J.P. Arencebia, or an outfielder, for better or for worse. But, even though the Blue Jays traded Mathis as part of the deal, I still expect one Toronto catcher is expendable with the acquisition of Buck.
