Fernando Rodney 2 (BARON)

Mariners to sign Fernando Rodney to a two-year, $14m deal

The Mariners have signed free agent RHP Fernando Rodney to a two-year, $14 million deal (Keri, Feb. 6).

Rodney can earn an additional $1 million in incentives during the life of the contract.

The Mets and Orioles both showed serious interest in Rodney (Nightengale, Feb. 4).

The Mets are still looking for a closer-type reliever even after signing Kyle Farnsworth earlier this week (Rubin, Feb. 3). However, Sandy Alderson said last week he’s more likely to limit free-agent relievers to minor-league deals (DiComo, Jan. 29).

The 36-year-old Rodney posted a 3.38 ERA and a 1.335 WHIP, with 37 saves, for Tampa Bay in 2013. Rodney pitched to a miniscule 0.60 ERA and 0.777 WHIP, tallying 48 saves in 2012.

I'm glad we didn't sign him.  He's definitely not a lock down closer and this leaves money to sign Stephen Drew - SS is a bigger problem anyway.

I hope they sign Hanrahan cheap and he'll be ready by May. Maybe get Gregg, too.

Ubaldo Jimenez and Nelson Cruz. Sign those two and go compete get the payroll at a normal MLB level how many times do they refinance and pocket before the league gets involved

Glad we took a pass. Not a great allocation of resources.

14 mill for a bullpen arm? No thanks. I get upset at the Mets not spending enough but it was a smart moving passing on this.

For what its worth, John Farrell was on ESPNradio this afternoon and matter of factly said Bogaerts is at short this year, maybe he's aware Drew isnt coming back to the Red Sox

No way the Mets would offer him that kind of money. Up next for the Mariners is Nelson Cruz, Ervin Santana and/or Ubaldo Jimenez.

At this point there really is no reason to get upset anymore. We know this ownership group is a joke. I cannot say the team is a joke because it is not the players fault and the logo doesn't sign players. The Wilpons are the only reason that this team is one of the worst run in baseball. Until they sell the team, we will continue to be a bad to mediocre organization with almost no chance at seeing playoff baseball

same old story, Mets leak interest in a guy, don't sign a guy.

This is an absolute joke! Spen money = fans in the seats. I guess they don't care.. I'm a 38yr old lifelong Metropolitans fan and this ownership group is a disgrace. Hell we wouldn't have signed Piazza if it weren't for Doubleday.. I for one will notgo to another Mets game as long as the Wilpons have a say in this team. What are we?

The D Rays? Marlins? A's? Give me a frekin break! They coulda signed Rodney, Cruz, & Drew & not even eclipsed 120mill.. Spend some money and show us that you care or by god just sell the team cuz your missing the boat Fred!

@metsblog This ownership wouldn't sign another decent player if a gun WA pointed at there heads. what a joke

Beat out by the big market seattle mariners, did anyone think it would be different but don't worry we did sign Farnsworth

Mets can't afford 7 mil a season?

This is not surprising....as I keep saying...the roster you see is the roster that will begin the season. Minor league filler is all this team will sign....

LOL what a shock...Vic Black as closer...

sosh

Let me guess.... We just missed out.

Yes. He was replacement level last year, but offers way more upside. His HR/9 seems extremely high although his GB% has been declining. But I rather go with Bailey over Rodney.

Matt Cooper

Sign cruz and drew ans a bp arm like krod and im happy this offseason. Wont even cost that much

Andrew Lavan
Andrew Lavan

I've seen random comments throwing out names that I think would be interesting and should be cheaper options than Rodney. Andrew Bailey is one who I specifically remember. You think that's a better option?

Robert Kramisen

I am fine with passing on him. His numbers are very similar to Frank Franc. Basically a high walk / high strikeout guy who only recently had any success. And even then, it wasn't as good as many think. Balfour was the better one to get and the Mets did try. Nothing they did wrong.

Robert Daly

That's the mets they show interest in everyone and at the end of the day they don't sign no one . This is why owner ship needs to go .

Now give us Drew and/or Cruz

@metsblog how mets don't make that happen blows my mind. 28th ranked pen here we come again. It's a joke!

@supert  unless Bobby Parnell has a set back or isn't effective next year as closer. Mets could still use a proven veteran bullpen arm but I would like to also see Drew and others signed to best help this team get back in the playoff picture in 2014.

Joe Paulson

@Victor Triguero Did you want them to spend 14M for a reliever who would in effect be your 8th inning guy?

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

Take a step back for a second...it's Fernando Rodney...a guy that was close to being out of baseball before going to the Rays.

I'd have liked him too but it's not that big a deal.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

Rodney went to a spot he's probably going to be closing..not hard to see why he opted for that..

Joe Paulson

@Victor Triguero They have a closer. Who is going to spend 7... I'm sorry. You just want to whine about the Mets. Okay.

@sosh Bonifacio was designated, not waived. They have to trade for him, so every team has a shot at him.

Won't happen. Sandy and wilpons are the worst. Forget abt Cruz and Drew. Another hear of tejada, satin, quintinlla, Duda, etx. Are these guys watching the same games as us????

Your delusional and part of the problem. Mets ownership and GM suck.

@metsblog please someone get sandy on Francesca. Need to hear this clown

@Joe Paulson Everyone thinks he automatically wanted to come here to set up Parnell. Obviously, he wants to close so he went where the job is as a closer. Next we'll hear the Mets offered the same as the Mariners. Bottom line is he wants to close full-time and that opportunity wasn't available here.

Dante Puzzuoli
Dante Puzzuoli

People like you are the probelm. To think you could possibly say that Rodney was not a top target or a must is obscure/ignorant. He's better than any current bullpen piece on the Mets. Including our closer Parnell. YOU SEE FANS JUST SETTLE FOR LESS NOW AND ITS OKAY. Thanks Wilpons.

zoddie
zoddie

Keep Cruz off this team. Spending money on an aging outfielder that can't play D is a terrible idea.

Dante Puzzuoli
Dante Puzzuoli

@Joe Paulson @Dante Puzzuoli  Tampa Bay has what we don't have and for that matter what most of other smallmarket baseball teams don't and thats excellent strategy and success and some part luck with spending little and always succeeding. They are stacked with young pitching in the pen and the rotation. to them rodney is expendable to the mets rodney was a must. Balfour could have been had as well. Same old dumpster diving mets

Dante Puzzuoli
Dante Puzzuoli

@BringBackDaveTelghe  Our best option is Gregg... who was removed from the Closers role by the Cubs at the end of last season due to horrible performance.... yea he can be effective... is he Rodney.... NA!!!! Come on man!

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

They can still easily upgrade the pen with what's left. Let's play this game, how many more wins does Rodney get us then a generic reliever?

Jonathan Mele
Jonathan Mele

Exactly bud. Some of these mets fans are delusional!!! It's pathetic. 7 mil a year. Get Cruz for 10 a year and drew for 8 a year. Payroll less then 120mil. Hate sandy. Hate wilpons. Not watching mets games anymore.
